BACKGROUND: Activation of two receptors for adenosine diphosphate (ADP), P2Y(1) and P2Y(12), is necessary for ADP-induced platelet aggregation (PA). It is generally believed that the antithrombotic effects of drugs inhibiting P2Y(12), such as clopidogrel, are uniquely mediated by inhibition of P2Y(12)-dependent PA. However, as P2Y(12) is negatively coupled to adenylyl cyclase (AC), its inhibition may also exert antithrombotic effects through the potentiation of prostacyclin (PGI(2)), which inhibit PA by stimulating AC.

The use of sterile connecting devices will permit up to 5-day storage of pooled platelet concentrates (PCs). However, there are no data evaluating long-term storage of PCs pooled from multiple donors. Four units of ABO-compatible or -incompatible PCs were pooled and stored in single 300-ml PL-732 storage bags for up to 5 days. BACKGROUND: Pathogenic bacteria which chronically colonise the cystic fibrosis (CF) lung produce a number of virulence determinants, including distinct proteolytic activities. The potential role bacterial proteases play on haemostatic dysregulation within the CF lung is, however, poorly defined, despite haemoptysis being a common complication in CF.

The influence of four agents--pyrazolidinedione derivatives on the ADP-induced aggregation and activity of glycolytic enzymes--glyceraldehydrophosphate dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase (GAPD, LDG) and of the anatomic oxidation enzyme--glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) was studied. The substances known by a conventional designation of MYaK-38, No-13 and No-2 are shown to display an antiaggregational action.
