BACKGROUND: The risk of developing avascular osteonecrosis (AVN) after chemotherapy is age related and, at up to 17% of all treated patients, relatively high.

The incidence of mixed-lineage leukemias in the pediatric age group was previously reported as 13.8% for myeloid antigen-positive ALL and 11.1% for lymphoid antigen-positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Recent studies showed that extensive chemotherapy protocols overcome the risk of myeloid lineage. Invasive fungal infection is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. The occurrence of two invasive fungal infections in one patient at the same time is quite rare. Here the authors report on two adolescent patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who developed combined invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and hepatosplenic candidiasis during chemotherapy. They were treated with liposomal amphotericin B, but one of them died due to massive pulmonary hemorrhage during recovery from neutropenia.

Acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a life-threatening complication of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. It is important to recognize the dermatologic manifestations of acute GVHD, as skin is often the initial organ of involvement. We present a case of acute GVHD characterized by rare clinical and histopathologic findings as only two erythematous nodules clinically and abrupt follicular wall necrosis histopathologically.

Translocation (14;14)(q11;q32) or inv(14)(q11q32) is a common cytogenetic aberration in T-cell leukemia associated with ataxia-telangiectasia (AT); however, rare reports have indicated that this abnormality also occurs in B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
