UNLABELLED: Most health problems dealt with at a primary care level have an oral health impact, making it vital for oral health services to find means to integrate with other facility-based programmes at primary health care (PHC) centres.
AIM: 1) To determine the oral status of the children attending a facility-based nutrition programme and the oral health knowledge, attitude and practices of their parents/caregivers; and 2) To develop a framework for an oral health component to complement this programme.
METHOD: A descriptive study of children and their parents/caregivers attending a facili

BACKGROUND: Depression is the commonest mental illness in developing countries and impoverished women are most at risk. Formal mental health services in these situations are rare. Depression commonly co-presents with physical symptoms or else is unspectacular, so the condition often goes unrecognised. To strengthen the prevention and management of depression, information is required on easily recognisable correlates of depression. This study explored associations between depression and reproductive health conditions in rural African women of reproductive age.
METHODS: A community-based reprod

BACKGROUND: Emergency service workers are at an elevated risk for stressor-related mental health (MH) issues, such as anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Barriers to help-seeking are widespread across this sector, necessitating interventions tailored to the unique needs of this population. Build Back Better is a smartphone-based intervention designed to provide evidence-based strategies for the prevention of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder among emergency service workers.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the usability, acceptability, feasibili

BACKGROUND: In 2016, the California Department of Healthcare Services (DHCS) released an "All Plan Letter" (APL 16-014) to its Medicaid managed care plans (MCPs) providing guidance on implementing tobacco-cessation coverage among Medicaid beneficiaries. However, implementation remains poor. We apply the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, Sustainment (EPIS) framework to identify barriers and facilitators to fidelity to APL 16-014 across California Medicaid MCPs.
METHODS: We assessed fidelity through semi-structured interviews with MCP health educators (N = 24). Interviews were recorded,

BACKGROUND: Malaria disease is one of the most dangerous protozoan parasitic infections with a high mortality rate in developing countries. Malaria is a public health issue, especially in Hormozgan province, and is highly affected by foreign immigrants (Pakistani and Afghani); thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of an intervention based on the health belief model (HBM) on the promotion of malaria prevention behaviors in Afghani immigrants over the age of 18. The participants resided in Persian city in Hormozgan province.
METHODS: The present quasi-experimental study was condu

BACKGROUND: About 35 % of non-elderly U.S. adult Medicaid enrollees have a behavioral health condition, such as anxiety, mood disorders, substance use disorders, and/or serious mental illness. Individuals with serious mental illness, in particular, have mortality rates that are 2 to 3 times higher as the general population, which are due to multiple factors including inactivity, poor nutrition, and tobacco use. 61 % of Medicaid beneficiaries with behavioral health conditions also have multiple other co-occurring chronic physical health conditions, which further contributes to morbidity and mor

INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis is one of the neglected tropical diseases targeted for elimination in Uganda through the Mass Drug Administration (MDA) programme. Praziquantel has been distributed using community resource persons in fixed sites and house-to-house visits; however the uptake is still below target coverage. In 2011/2012 MDA exercise, uptake stood at 50% yet WHO target coverage is 75% at community level. We assessed the uptake of MDA and the associated factors in Koome Islands, Central Uganda.
METHODS: In March 2013, we conducted a mixed methods cross sectional study in 15 randomly

BACKGROUND: The disease prevention and control system represents a fundamental component of public health services. Although the Chinese government has consistently prioritized and increased funding for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCs), whether these additional resources have been effectively translated into improved public health outcomes remains indeterminate. This study was designed to evaluate the operational efficiency of CDCs in China, objectively present the changes in efficiency values, and provide an evidence base for optimizing their service effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent and young men who have sex with men (AYMSM) are experiencing an ongoing epidemic in Vietnam. HIV testing and preexposure prophylaxis uptake among AYMSM remain low in Vietnam, especially compared to older men. AYMSM living with HIV are also less likely to initiate HIV care. M-Cubed is a status-neutral mobile intervention developed in the United States focusing on HIV prevention and care among men who have sex with men. The app has the potential to significantly contribute to improving the HIV prevention and care continuum for AYMSM.
OBJECTIVE: We propose to adapt the M-C

Transgender women, especially transgender women of color, are disproportionately affected by HIV. However, no surveillance system collects data on HIV risk factors among this population. To address this gap, CDC developed a surveillance system entitled National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Among Transgender Women (NHBS-Trans) to assess behavioral and contextual data through systematic biobehavioral surveillance to monitor behavioral risk factors, prevention usage, and HIV prevalence among transgender women. NHBS-Trans used respondent-driven sampling in seven urban areas in the United States. Tr

INTRODUCTION: HIV remains a major global public health challenge, with nearly 1.3 million new HIV acquisitions annually. Despite the effectiveness of pre-exposure (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), barriers to access, initiation and adherence persist. Pharmacists, as accessible healthcare providers with medication expertise, are increasingly involved in HIV prevention. However, the scope and impact of pharmacist-led prophylaxis services have not been comprehensively synthesized. This study aimed to map and characterize the existing evidence on pharmacists' services, interventions and

Chronic diseases remain a pressing issue in Texas, where high rates of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions challenge public health. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service addresses health by translating research into practice at the community level through educational programming and resources created by Extension Specialists and delivered by Extension Agents. This Practice Brief Report describes the design and delivery of a simple, pre-prepared AgriLife Extension program that addresses chronic conditions by encouraging healthy eating and active living. The program, HealthTalk E

Despite availability of highly effective oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for close to a decade, uptake and adherence among at-risk young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in Kenya, remain significantly low. This study investigated levels of PrEP knowledge, motivations, facilitators and barriers influencing PrEP initiation, persistence and adherence among YMSM, in efforts to optimise use and reduce risk of new HIV infections. In September 2021, 22 YMSM selected from 248 YMSM who had previously participated in an integrated bio-behavioural sexual health survey, took part in semi-structur

Postoperative readmissions in orthopedic surgery remain a persistent cause of patient morbidity and increased healthcare costs, many of which are preventable through improved care coordination. Social workers are uniquely positioned to address psychosocial and structural barriers influencing postoperative recovery. This narrative review examined peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2025 using PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Google Scholar. Eligible studies included U.S.-based articles evaluating social work roles in discharg

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is characterised by atherosclerotic stenosis or occlusion of arteries that leads to reduced blood flow to the limbs. PAD is associated with a very high rate of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality making the health and economic burden of PAD substantial. Despite high-quality evidence and international guidelines recommending conservative medical management of risk factors, and exercise and lifestyle interventions, surgical revascularisation (open or endovascular) remains the main treatment for PAD. Alarmingly, up to one-third of patients do not receive best

OBJECTIVES: The healthcare system accounts for 4 percent of United Kingdom (UK) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually. In response to climate change, the National Health Service (NHS) is calling for less carbon-intensive care practices through prevention. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a leading cause of infant hospitalization, currently has no widespread immunization program in the UK. This study estimates the impact on GHG emissions generated within the care pathway from an immunization against RSV in all infants in the UK with nirsevimab, a new monoclonal antibody used in prophylaxis.

Syphilis is an infectious disease that can be diagnosed and treated cheaply. Despite being a curable condition, the syphilis rate is increasing worldwide. In this sense, computational methods can analyze data and assist managers in formulating new public policies for preventing and controlling sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Computational techniques can integrate knowledge from experiences and, through an inference mechanism, apply conditions to a database that seeks to explain data behavior. This systematic review analyzed studies that use computational methods to establish or improve

As a chronic disease, cervical spondylosis is prone to recurrent attacks as we age if we do not pay attention to protection, which can easily lead to symptoms such as osteophytes and herniated discs. In the early stage of cervical spondylosis, it is possible to alleviate the disease and prevent its aggravation by improving poor cervical posture and increasing cervical activities. This article analyzes the current situation and medical prospect of smart wearable devices with the prevention and treatment of cervical spondylosis in white-collar people as the starting point and smart wearable devi

PURPOSE: The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with St. John Providence Health System, initiated voluntary school-wide sexually transmitted disease (STD) screenings in four Detroit public high schools. We sought to assess the cost-effectiveness of the STD screening program from 2010 to 2015, with a focus on chlamydia.
METHODS: The costs and effectiveness of the school-based screening were compared with those of a "no school screening" scenario using a healthcare system perspective. A decision tree model was constructed to project cases of chlamydia, epididymit

INTRODUCTION: Sexual violence (SV) against children is a global health and human rights issue that can have short and long-term consequences for health and wellbeing. Disclosing SV increases the likelihood that children can access health and protective services and receive psychosocial support. Research in high-income countries has found that child SV survivors are more likely to disclose when they are girls/women, experience fewer SV events, and experience SV perpetrated by a stranger. No studies have examined correlates of SV disclosure in Kenya.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research wa
