BACKGROUND: Bioprosthetic valves are often used for pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) and tricuspid valve replacement (TVR) because of concerns about mechanical valve thrombosis in the right heart. The purpose of this study was to assess prosthetic valve function and outcomes (prosthetic valve dysfunction, reoperations and major bleeding events) after mechanical PVR and TVR and to compare these to bioprostheses implanted in the same positions.
METHOD: Case-control study of adults with congenital heart disease that underwent mechanical TVR or PVR (2003-2021) at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota…

Background Tricuspid valve regurgitation is frequently overlooked by cardiologists and cardiac surgeons alike; consequently, the tricuspid valve is often referred to as "the forgotten" valve. It is the most common complication of left heart valve disease. Ring annuloplasty and suture (De Vega) annuloplasty represent two common surgical treatment techniques. We developed a technique to stabilize the tricuspid annulus using a simple handmade Gore-Tex vascular prosthesis. Our literature review did not reveal any publications describing an identical approach. Objectives In this article, we report

Pulmonary hypertension in chronic mitral valve disease has been related most commonly to left ventricular dysfunction or mitral stenosis; its association with chronic, isolated mitral regurgitation and preserved left ventricular systolic function is unclear. In 41 catheterized patients with chronic mitral regurgitation (known history of mitral regurgitation for greater than 18 months) and preserved left ventricular systolic function (ejection fraction greater than 0.55), historic, electrocardiographic, echocardiographic and hemodynamic variables were analyzed. Ten patients (Group I) had normal

Mechanical and biological prostheses are valid options when aortic valve replacement is necessary. The Ross procedure is also an alternative solution, especially for young patients. We describe the case of a young patient with congenital aortic stenosis and bicuspid aortic valve who presented with dyspnea on exertion. An open commissurotomy was performed, and within 8 months the patient developed recurrent symptoms of severe aortic stenosis. He underwent redo sternotomy and a Ross-Konno procedure with an uneventful recovery.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Ross procedure is one of the surgical procedures for correction of severe congenital aortic insufficiency. Intrao … ntricle; severe aortic insufficiency due to coaptation failure of the three leaflets; and competent pulmonary valve without anatomical and physiological changes. Intercurrences were not observed during surgery, with 120 minutes of extracorporeal circulation (ECC) and 8 hours of surgery. Immediately after removal from ECC the transesophageal echocardiography showe …

We report the case of a 22-year-old woman in whom a focal aplasia of the pulmonary valve annulus associated with a multiple aneurysmal compensatory dysplasia was found. This patient had been followed since the age of seven years for a congenital asymmetric hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Cardiac Doppler analysis showed significant pulmonary valvular insufficiency. The patient underwent heart transplant surgery because of total and refractory cardiac insufficiency. Pathological examination of the explanted heart (at the European Homograft Bank) enabled us to describe this valvular malformation. To…

Tricuspid annular calcification was observed on cardiac screening of a 50 year old woman with congenital valvular pulmonary stenosis and confirmed by angiography. At operation, the tricuspid annular calcification was palpable but there was no interference with valvular function. There was no associated disease process in this patient. Phosphate and calcium metabolism was normal. Tricuspid annular calcification is very rare: 7 other reported cases, aged 42 to 51 years old. All patients had right ventricular hypertension usually caused by pulmonary stenosis. Tricuspid valve function was normal i
