Brain temperature and ethanol sensitivity in C57 mice: a radiotelemetric study.

This study investigated the relationship between ethanol sensitivity and brain temperature using radiotelemetric techniques. Radiotelemetric brain probes were implanted in the lateral cerebral ventricle of C57BL/6 mice. Rectal and brain temperatures, duration of loss of righting reflex (LORR), and blood and brain ethanol concentrations at the return of righting reflex (RORR) were measured following intraperitoneal (IP) injection with 3.6 g/kg ethanol and exposure to 12, 15, 22 or 34 degrees C. Rectal and brain temperatures were significantly correlated in untreated and intoxicated mice. Brain

Reliability of anal pressure measurements.

This study investigates whether measurements of anal sphincter pressure and length are reproducible and whether visual analyses of manometric tracings are reliable. Manometric studies were performed on three different days in 10 male and 10 female healthy subjects with the use of a pneumohydraulic capillary perfusion system. There was complete agreement between both observers in the analysis of anal resting and squeeze pressure as well as sphincter length. The pressure profiles from different days correlated significantly (P less than 0.01) with each other regardless of whether the studies wer

Investigation of vestibular damage by antituberculous drugs.

Vestibular function testing was performed regularly on patients who were administered streptomycin, kanamycin, or enviomycin, and vestibular damage was detected at an early stage, and quantitatively. We investigated the point in time at which the therapy should be discontinued. Subjects consisted of 204 cases of tuberculosis treated with streptomycin, kanamycin, enviomycin. They were admitted to the hospital between December 1984 and August 1989. Twenty-eight cases of vestibular dysfunction due to streptomycin, kanamycin, and enviomycin could easily be detected at an early stage by performing

Neurophysiological observations on corticospinal projections to the upper limb in subjects with Rett syndrome.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the excitability of corticospinal neurons and the integrity of their projections to the alpha motor neurons through the corticospinal tract in subjects of different ages with Rett syndrome. Electromagnetic stimulation of the motor cortex and cervical motor roots was used to evoke motor action potentials in the biceps brachii and hypothenar muscles. The phasic stretch reflex in the biceps brachii was also recorded to study the excitability of spinal alpha motor neurons. Motor cortex stimulation evoked motor action potentials at low threshold and w

Bevantolol attenuates thiazide stimulated renin secretion and catecholamine release in diuretic resistant hypertensives.

An attempt was made to establish whether cardioselective beta-blockade could counteract the stimulation by hydrochlorothiazide of the renin-angiotensin and sympathetic nervous systems and to what extent such actions contributed to the antihypertensive effect of bevantolol. The hemodynamic and neurohumoral responses of 21 thiazide resistant hypertensives who had received sequential chronic therapy with hydrochlorothiazide, hydrochlorothiazide combined with bevantolol and bevantolol monotherapy were compared. In these patients, bevantolol had a negative chronotropic effect and appeared, when adm

Respiratory and cardiac effects of passive limb movements in man.

The purpose of these experiments is to see if reflex nervous hyperventilation obtained by passive limb movements in man is a consequence of the activation of a direct ascending nervous pathway from mechanoreceptors of moving limbs to respiratory centres, or if it is the consequence of a primary enhanced cardiodynamic activity. Contemporaneous measurements of pulmonary ventilation and cardiac output (the latter with the trasthoracic bioimpedance method) were carried out in subjects whose ankles were passively moved at an angle of 10 degrees and a frequency of 1 Hz, each test lasting three breat

Electromyography of the larynx and related technics.

Electrodiagnosis of the laryngeal muscles by electromyography, neuromyography and reflexmyography enables diagnosis, follow up and prognosis of vocal cord palsies as well as indications for surgery. The development of new endoscopes now permits direct inspection of the oropharyngeal and endolaryngeal muscles. A method of transoral electromyography of laryngeal muscles in the awake patient has been established using these zoom-endoscopes for supervision of the transoral placement of needle or hooked-wire electrodes into the muscular agonists and antagonists of the larynx. Activities of thiamine-dependent enzymes in two experimental models of thiamine-deficiency encephalopathy: 1. The pyruvate dehydrogenase complex.

Chronic thiamine deprivation in the rat leads to selective neuropathological damage in brainstem structures whereas treatment with the central thiamine antagonist, pyrithiamine, results in more widespread damage. In order to further elucidate the neurochemical mechanisms responsible for this selective damage, the thiamine-dependent enzyme complex pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDHC) was measured in 10 brain structures in the rat during progression of thiamine deficiency produced by chronic deprivation or by pyrithiamine treatment. Feeding of a thiamine-deficient diet to adult rats resulted in 5-7 wee

Ionizing radiation and the conceptus: neurophysiologic effects of prenatal X-radiation on offspring.

A brief review of the literature precedes the presentation of a radiation behavioral teratology study. The various types of radiation and the units of measure used in radiation biology are discussed. The concept of the radiation-induced teratogenic "triad" of growth retardation, malformation, and death is presented. A discussion of stage- and dose-dependent sensitivity to prenatal irradiation is followed by an introduction to behavioral teratology as a new interdisciplinary area of investigation, emphasizing postnatal psychophysiologic analyses of the effects of prenatal exposure. Swallowing disorders in persons with cerebrovascular accident.

Thirty-eight CVA patients with swallowing disorders were studied videofluorographically (VFG) to determine: (1) the nature of their swallowing disorders, (2) the relationship between the site of the cerebrovascular accident and the nature of the swallowing disorder(s) exhibited and (3) the frequency and etiology of any aspiration present. The 38 CVA patients exhibited a variety of physiologic disturbances in swallowing, usually occurring in combination rather than as isolated disorders. A delayed swallowing reflex was the most frequent disorder seen in all patient groups. Reduced pharyngeal pe

[Long-term effects of substance P on the higher nervous activity of primates].

The conditioned reflex, blood pressure and behavioral parameters prior to and during a single application of Substance P to unnarcotized primates were tested on four successive days, as well as of physiological saline also administered as a single application on four successive days. The evaluations were done each after 24 h from application. In a dose range from 0.25-25 micrograms/kg b.wt. the drug improved the performance of the conditioned reflex, while at 250 micrograms/kg b.wt. no improvement was ascertainable. At high doses behavioral disorders occurred. Blood pressure values showed no d

Vasopressin response to orthostatic hypotension. Etiologic and clinical implications.

Plasma vasopressin was measured before and after tilt testing in 18 patients with orthostatic hypotension of various causes. In six patients, all of whom had normal osmotic regulation of vasopressin, normal stimulation of vasopressin did not occur on tilt testing; all six had clinical evidence of defects in the afferent or central connections of the baroregulatory reflex arc. In the remaining 12 patients, plasma vasopressin increased to levels appropriate for the degree of hypotension; none of these patients had clinical evidence of defects in afferent or central portions of the baroregulatory

The neurophysiological basis of bladder inhibition in response to intravaginal electrical stimulation.

Intravaginal electrical stimulation (IVS) induces a profound bladder inhibition and is successful in the treatment of incontinence due to detrusor instability. In this experimental study in cats, direct recordings of the efferent activity in thin hypogastric and pelvic nerve filaments to the bladder were used to analyze the neuronal mechanisms underlying this bladder inhibition. A longlasting reflex discharge, with a latency of 35 to 50 msec., was evoked in the hypogastric nerve by IVS. The reflex discharge was unaffected by imposed changes in intravesical pressure or by micturition contractio

Calcium channel blocking agents in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders. Part II: Hemodynamic effects and clinical applications.

The calcium channel blocking agents have multiple hemodynamic effects that make them potentially valuable in treating many cardiovascular disorders. They are potent dilators of coronary and peripheral arteries and in isolated tissue preparations exert potent negative inotropic, chronotropic, and dromotropic effects. In intact animals the peripheral arterial vasodilatation induces reflex-mediated adrenergic activity, which opposes the direct negative inotropic, chronotropic, dromotropic, and hypotensive effects. The individual calcium channel blockers have different relative potencies on variou

Paroxysmal neurogenic hypertension and its prevention in patients with cervical spinal cord lesions.

Ten patients with clinically complete cervical spinal cord transection of traumatic origin were studied. These subjects do not have supraspinal control of their sympathetic outflow and are prone to marked elevations of blood pressure during visceral and somatic stimulation. This is a result of reflex sympathetic activity via the isolated spinal cord. The arterial blood pressures and heart rates of these patients were recorded on separate occasions during elevation of the urinary bladder pressure and before and after treatment with propranolol, labetalol, phenoxybenzamine and guanethidine. A pharmacologic comparison of 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine and LSD in the chronic spinal dog.

MDA (2.0 and 2.2 mg/kg) was compared to LSD (10 microgram/kg) and d-amphetamine (3.2 mg/kg) in single dose, antagonism, cross tolerance and appetite suppression studies. In single doses MDA specifically resembled d-amphetamine by producing marked mydriasis, nictitating membrane retraction, stereotypy and darting eye movements and LSD by markedly facilitating the flex or reflex, producing continuous stepping, whining and eye tracking movements. LSD and MDA increased respiration, body temperature and the latency of the skin twitch reflex and produced behavioral arousal. Cyproheptadine antagonize

[Functional state of spinal centers in patients with cerebral circulatory disorders according to the results of stimulation electromyography].

In 53 patients in different periods of brain strokes the authors studied the functional state of spinal centers by means of registration of H-reflex and F-wave of the skeleton muscles. In spite of the stroke character a marked increase of excitation of the spinal centers was observed, it being especially significant in the subacute period of the disease. The increase of H-reflex amplitude was maximal in extremities, contralateral to the focus of the lesion, but it was observed on the lesion side as well. The patients with cerebral coma in the acute stage of the stroke demonstrated a descrease

[Acute toxicity and the central effect of 1-(m-chlorophenyl)-3-N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl-5-methoxypyrazole (PZ-177)].

In a previous paper, we reported that PZ-177 had potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. In the present work, acute toxicity and action of PZ-177 on the central nervous system were tested in comparison with PZ-222, one of metabolites of PZ-177, and mepirizole. Acute toxicity of PZ-177 was slightly less than that of aminopyrine and the same as that of mepirizole in mice and rats. PZ-177 produced from sedation to loss of righting reflex with the increase of dose. At a low dose with which the righting reflex was hot lost, PZ-177 decreased spontaneous locomotion of mice in the Animex te

[Vascular responses to tilting in paraplegic subject compared to normal (author's transl)].

1 Vascular tone is higher in paraplegics than in normals, both in capacitance and resistance vessels. This is possibly correlated with the increase in circulating catecholamines which has recently been reported. 2 Tilting at 30 degrees from horizontal induces a hydrostatic increase in transmural pressure in the affected vascular bed. This pressure change causes: an initial decrease in resistance, followed by a progressive increase which can be explained by the Bayliss reflex. The time sequence and amplitude of the responses are comparable for normal and paraplegic subjects; an increase in vasc
