Between 1991 and 1994, 21 patients with war missile injuries of the spine and spinal cord were treated; there were 17 men and four women, with a mean age 30.7 years; 52.4 per cent were civilians. The wounds were caused by shells (54.6 per cent) and bullets (45.4 per cent). In 11 patients with locked cervical spine facets after blunt injury, the patency of the vertebral arteries was evaluated by color-coded Duplex sonography (CCDS) up to 11 years after the accident. Low back pain (LBP) is the most common, costly, and disabling musculoskeletal condition. Although most LBP patients recover within two months, 2-3% eventually develop disabling chronic low back pain (DCLBP). Due to the prevalence of DCLBP problems, models have been developed to predict which acute low back pain patients are predisposed to the problems associated with this condition. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between oral contraceptive use and bone mineral density at the hip and spine. Community based women aged 41-76 years (n = 841) were recruited from four general practices in Cambridge. Each subject completed a health questionnaire. Forty consecutive patients with 19 fractures and 21 fracture-dislocations in the lower cervical spine were treated prospectively with open reduction and interbody fusion, using the AO titanium locking screw-plate system. A retrospective analysis of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging studies of 78 patients with acute cervical spinal cord injuries was undertaken to determine which observations related directly to the neurologic injury. We analysed 80 consecutive patients with postero-lateral spine fusion performed during the years 1972-1976. Thirty-seven were women and 43 men, the mean age being 30 (14-54) years. In 73 cases the fusion was performed because of spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis and in seven because of some other form of painful instability. In 35 patients with recurrent radicular complaints which occurred 4 weeks to 38 months after operation for lumbar disc herniation, the degree of contrast enhancement of hypertrophic scar tissue was examined. All patients were scanned before and immediately after intravenous contrast application (volume: 1.5-2.0 ml/kg body weight, flow rate: 0.35 ml/sec).
