Refining a Video and Text Message Intervention (STAR, Skills Training in Active Recovery) to Prevent the Onset or Escalation of Posttraumatic Stress and Opioid Misuse Among Recent Sexual Assault Survivors: Community Engaged Study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is prevalent, and the consequences can be chronic and impairing. However, few interventions exist to prevent the onset or escalation of posttraumatic stress symptoms and opioid misuse among recent sexual violence survivors. OBJECTIVE: This study describes a collaborative process of updating an integrated postsexual assault video and developing an SMS text messaging intervention program with a community advisory board (CAB) of sexual assault survivors. METHODS: Research team members met virtually for six 60-90-minute meetings with a 5-member CAB of sexual assault s

"Calming the nightmares": A qualitative study of a socially assistive robot for sensory and emotional support in individuals with eating disorders and PTSD.

Individuals with eating disorders (ED) and co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often face difficulties with sensory overload and emotion regulation (ER), which can make treatment more complex. Assistive devices that offer real-time support are needed to enhance therapeutic interventions. This qualitative pilot study explored the engagement, acceptability, and perceived impact of Purrble, a socially assistive robot, as an adjunct tool for sensory and ER support. Nine participants (8 female, 1 non-binary, aged 20-55) were recruited from an ED service and engaged with Purrble over

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy in Persons With Personality Disorders: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Adverse childhood experiences contribute to the development of personality disorders (PDs). Although trauma-focused interventions are effective for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), their effect on PD symptoms is less established. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in reducing PD symptoms compared with a waiting list, regardless of PTSD status. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This 2-arm, multicenter, single-blind, randomized clinical trial was performed in the specialized outpatient departments of 2 clin

Association between discrimination and subsequent psychotic experiences in patients with COVID-19: A cohort study.

Although cross-sectional studies have suggested that discrimination has a negative impact on the mental health of patients with COVID-19, no cohort studies with longitudinal data have established a causal relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between COVID-19-related discrimination and subsequent psychotic experiences in individuals who had contracted the disease. Secondary outcomes were PTSD symptoms, psychological distress, and suicidal ideation. We utilized inverse probability weighting and marginal structural models with robust standard errors to analyze

Associations of war-related PTSD symptoms with sleep disturbance: The explanatory roles of emotion regulation difficulties and intolerance of uncertainty.

OBJECTIVE: Although associations between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep disturbance are well-established, relatively little work has examined mechanisms that may underlie this association. This study aimed to examine the explanatory role of emotion regulation difficulties and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) in associations between PTSD symptoms and sleep disturbance among a sample of war-exposed Iraqi individuals. METHOD: We used structural equation modeling in a war-exposed nonclinical sample (N = 617; Mage = 27.63; SD = 4.81; 46.03% females) to model indirect effects from PT

The Complex Interplay between BDSM and Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Form of Repetition and Dissociation or a Path Toward Processing and Healing?

In this theoretical paper the authors explore the connections between BDSM (i.e., practices involving bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, sadism, masochism) and CSA (childhood sexual abuse) in order to investigate the potential unconscious mechanisms at play and the therapeutic functions of BDSM practices among CSA victims. Drawing on the embodiment framework, the authors address how BDSM may serve as a form of unconscious repetition of traumatic experiences for certain CSA victims, with the aim of processing trauma and healing. A review of the empirical evidence regarding the links be

A disproportionate burden: Prevalence of trauma and mental health difficulties among sexual minority versus heterosexual U.S. military veterans.

This study examined sociodemographic, military, and trauma characteristics, and mental health concerns that differ by sexual orientation in a nationally representative sample of U.S. military veterans. Data were analyzed from 4069 veterans who participated in the National Health and Resilience Veterans Study (NHRVS). Compared with veterans who self-reported as heterosexual (n = 3,491, 94.7%), sexual minority veterans (n = 161, 5.3%) were more likely to be younger, women, Hispanic, unmarried/partnered, have lower household income, and to have enlisted in the military, and served for 4-9 years (

Mental health and sleep disturbances among Ukrainian refugees in the context of Russian-Ukrainian war: A preliminary result from online-survey.

The ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict has caused a significant displacement of individuals, with an estimated five million Ukrainians seeking temporary refuge in other countries. We conducted a survey among Ukrainians in various countries worldwide using a convenience sample and analyzed 144 responses. The participants were divided into two groups: group 1, consisting of 92 Ukrainian refugees who were forced to leave their country due to the conflict, and group 2, comprising 52 individuals who did not change their place of residence. Data were collected through a structured online questionnai

Posttraumatic sleep disturbances in veterans: A pilot randomized controlled trial of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia and imagery rehearsal therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with sleep disturbances including insomnia and nightmares. This study compared cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) with CBT-I combined with imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) for nightmares to evaluate if the combined treatment led to greater reductions in trauma-related sleep disturbances in Australian veterans. METHODS: Veterans with diagnosed PTSD, high insomnia symptom severity, and nightmares (N = 31) were randomized to eight group CBT-I sessions or eight group CBT-I + IRT sessions. Self-reported sleep, nightmare,

Glucocorticoids and the Brain after Critical Illness.

Treatment for critical illness typically focuses on a patient's short-term physical recovery; however, recent work has broadened our understanding of the long-term implications of illness and treatment strategies. In particular, survivors of critical illness have significantly elevated risk of developing lasting cognitive impairment and psychiatric disorders. In this review, we examine the role of endogenous and exogenous glucocorticoids in neuropsychiatric outcomes following critical illness. Illness is marked by acute elevation of free cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone suppression, wh

Nocturnal Olfactory Stimulation for Improvement of Sleep Quality in Patients With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Randomized Exploratory Intervention Trial.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by sleep impairment and nightmares. As pleasant odors presented during sleep affect the emotional tone of dreams without inducing arousal, we investigated whether sleep patterns in PTSD can be improved via nocturnal olfactory stimulation. Participants were 40 inpatients with PTSD (n = 35 women; age range: 20-59 years) who completed a randomized, patient-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Baseline measurement for 5 consecutive nights was followed by a 5-night experimental intervention or placebo trial. During the intervention, patients receive

Comparing the clinical presentation of eating disorder patients with and without trauma history and/or comorbid PTSD.

This study examined whether clinical characteristics among patients presenting to residential eating disorder (ED) treatment differed according to patients' trauma history and current PTSD diagnostic status. Participants (699 girls and women) completed surveys at treatment onset. One-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) tests assessed cross-sectional differences between three groups of patients: those reporting no trauma history (No Trauma, n = 185), those with trauma history but without PTSD (Trauma, n = 263), and those with current PTSD (PTSD, n = 251). Relative to the No Trauma group, the co
