Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive and rare neuroendocrine cutaneous carcinoma with poor prognosis and with increasing morbidity and mortality in cases of distant metastasis. Given the rarity of MCC, optimal treatment is not well established. Treatment usually consists of multidisciplinary management with local excision of the primary tumour. Imaging studies are essential for accurate staging and monitoring of disease progression. The incidence of local recurrence is highest in the first 2 years and ranges from 27% to 60%. Distant metastasis is most common in the skin, liver, bone, l

Mutations in the cell cycle checkpoint kinase 2 (CHEK2) tumor suppressor gene are associated with multi-organ cancer susceptibility including cancers of the breast and prostate. A genetic association between thyroid and breast cancer has been suggested, however little is known about the determinants of this association. To characterize the association of CHEK2 mutations with thyroid cancer, we genotyped 468 unselected patients with papillary thyroid cancer and 468 (matched) cancer-free controls for four founder mutations of CHEK2 (1100delC, IVS2 + 1G>A, del5395 and I157T). We compared the fami

PURPOSE: The initial management of patients presenting with orbital inflammatory syndromes varies-with some pursuing a diagnostic workup while others treat without any testing. The evidence behind this rationale is limited. A review of patients with orbital inflammation is performed with an analysis of diagnostic testing to develop a workflow for such patients.
DESIGN: A retrospective review of patients presenting with acute orbital inflammation at a single institution from 2011 to 2020 was conducted.
METHODS: Orbital imaging was required for inclusion. Patients with high suspicion of neopla

BACKGROUND: Endocrine disorders are one of the common late complications of cancer treatment in childhood and adulthood. The incidence is more common in individuals who underwent oncology treatment in childhood in whom the estimated prevalence of these disorders is 20-50%. With improving treatment, there is an increasing number of people with a history of cancer treatment and thus persons who are potentially at risk of developing endocrine disorders. In adults, the prevalence of disorders is lower compared to those who had treatment in their childhood; however, endocrinological complications a

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Autoimmune gastrointestinal dysmotility is a limited autoimmune dysautonomia occurring idiopathically or in the context of an anatomically remote neoplasm, previously documented or unsuspected. Here we report 24 Mayo Clinic patients in whom the profile of serum autoantibodies aided this diagnosis.
METHODS: All patients were ascertained serologically in the course of service evaluation for autoantibodies consistent with neurologic autoimmunity. Review of their histories, motility studies, and laboratory findings revealed that all had presented with subacute gastrointestinal

Unlike other pituitary hormones, PRL is under tonic inhibition by the hypothalamus by way of the PRL inhibitory factor, dopamine. GAP and GABA may also be inhibitory. PRL-releasing factors include TRH and VIP and possibly others. Circulating PRL is predominantly monomeric, although some patients with hyperprolactinemia appear to have increased quantities of the less biologically active polymeric forms. PRL is secreted episodically, with an increase in the amplitude of the secretory pulses with sleep. A transitory increase also occurs in response to the protein component of meals. Basal PRL lev

Small cell carcinoma (SCC) has become recognized as a distinct, though relatively infrequent, clinical pathology that occurs in multiple sites throughout the head and neck. Excluding cases that are considered to arise from skin, SCC in the head and neck has been found to develop in nearly all structures associated with the upper aerodigestive tract. Among the head and neck sites, the frequency of SCC is greatest in the larynx, with salivary glands and the sinonasal region comprising the other principle areas of origin. Controversy exist as to whether SCC can develop as a distinct entity in the

The ultrastructural localization of chromogranin A (Chr A) was studied in eleven neoplasias of the diffuse neuroendocrine system (3 pancreatic islet-cell tumours, 1 medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, 1 large bowel and 1 small bowel carcinoid tumours, 2 carcinoid tumours of the lung, 1 adenoma of the parathyroid gland, 2 pheochromocytomas of the adrenal gland). On account of the great influence of the technical treatment of the samples on the immunolocalization of Chr A, the effect of the following variables was studied in a case of pheochromocytoma: fixation in glutaraldehyde versus paraforma

CONTEXT: Previous genome-wide association studies have shown that single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2439302 in chromosome 8p12 is significantly associated with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) risk and dysregulated NRG1 expression. The underlying mechanisms remain to be discovered.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the expression of NRG1 isoforms, candidate functional variants, and potential genes downstream of NRG1 in thyroid tissue.
METHODS: Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was applied for gene expression analysis. SNaPshot assay, haplotype, and computer analyses wer

OBJECTIVES: Postoperative hypoparathyroidism (HPT) is one of the most common complications in total thyroidectomy for thyroid carcinoma. Parathyroid glands (PTGs) are at risk of being damaged during total thyroidectomy and central neck dissection mainly due to inadvertent removal, interruption of the blood supply or hematoma formation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of our surgical procedure to preserve for parathyroid function retrospectively and to clarify the risk factors of HPT after total thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer.

BACKGROUND: Adrenal masses in patients with known malignancy may be interpreted as metastasized disease, although a significant proportion of these tumors are of adrenal origin. Despite improved imaging techniques, it remains difficult to distinguish an adrenal metastasis from a pheochromocytoma or a lipid-poor adrenocortical adenoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report a case series of four patients with established or suspected malignant disease (melanoma, transitional cell carcinoma and prostate carcinoma, thyroid carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma) harboring an adrenal mass. None of these patien
