BACKGROUND: Endodontic infections are a leading cause of oro-facial pain and tooth loss in western countries, and may lead to severe life-threatening infections. These infections are polymicrobial with high bacterial diversity. Understanding the spatial transition of microbiota from normal oral cavities through the infected root canal to the acute periapical abscess can improve our knowledge of the pathogenesis of endodontic infections and lead to more effective treatment. We obtained samples from the oral cavity, infected root canal and periapical abscess of 8 patients (5 with localized and 3

The recent focus on the potential link between periodontal and cardiovascular disease (PD and CVD) is part of the larger renewed interest on the role of infection and inflammation in the etiology of atherosclerosis and its clinical manifestations. Periodontal Disease is an inflammatory process affecting the periodontium, the tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth. The process usually starts with an inflammatory process of the gum (gingivitis) but it may progress with an extensive involvement of the gum, as well as the periodontal ligament and the bone surrounding the teeth resulting in s

OBJECTIVE: To identify genetic causes of COACH syndrome
BACKGROUND: COACH syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterised by Cerebellar vermis hypoplasia, Oligophrenia (developmental delay/mental retardation), Ataxia, Coloboma, and Hepatic fibrosis. The vermis hypoplasia falls in a spectrum of mid-hindbrain malformation called the molar tooth sign (MTS), making COACH a Joubert syndrome related disorder (JSRD).
METHODS: In a cohort of 251 families with JSRD, 26 subjects in 23 families met criteria for COACH syndrome, defined as JSRD plus clinically apparent liver disease. Diagno

In order to simultaneously assess the local humoral immune and polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) responses in periodontal disease, IgG, IgM, and IgA, as well as the PMN lysosomal enzyme beta-glucuronidase (beta G), were examined in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) from patients with varying degrees of periodontal pathology. Evaluations were made before and after conservative therapy (scaling and root planing). Thirty patients with varying degrees of periodontal pathology, ranging from mild inflammatory gingivitis to moderate periodontitis, were studied. GCF was collected from the mesial surface

The community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN) has been recommended for epidemiological surveys of periodontal status and treatment needs. The prevalence of gingivitis, periodontitis and missing teeth in a study population has been determined using the CPITN and GPM/T (gingivitis: periodontitis: missing teeth) indices. In this study, a survey of periodontal disease was performed among the adult population of Taipei City using the CPITN index. A total of 673 dentated persons (male 339, 50.4%; female 334, 49.6%) were examined and surveyed. Data were then divided into five age groups,

Chronic periodontitis, a common disease of microbial origin, is the major cause of tooth loss in adult humans. The disease serves as a convenient experimental model for analysis of many aspects of chronic inflammation. A consideration of currently available data has permitted the formulation of a new concept of the pathogenesis of this disease. The gingival tissues respond within 2 to 4 days to a beginning accumlation of microbial plaque with a classic acute exudative vasculitis which we have termed the initial lesion. This response, which includes loss of perivascular collagen, is comparable

In this review, we summarized published reports that investigated the role of Nigella sativa (NS) and its active constituent, thymoquinone (TQ) in oral health and disease management. The literature studies were preliminary and scanty, but the results revealed that black seed plants have a potential therapeutic effect for oral and dental diseases. Such results are encouraging for the incorporation of these plants in dental therapeutics and hygiene products. However, further detailed preclinical and clinical studies at the cellular and molecular levels are required to investigate the mechanisms

Eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and boulimia nervosa may have consequences for both the oral tissues and the salivary glands. In the oral cavity these eating disorders result frequently in dental erosion, but also in dental caries. The salivary glands are regularly swollen without pain; a hypofunction in the salivary secretory process may develop resulting in dry mouth feelings. In this paper these aspects will be reviewed and illustrated with patient cases.

Referred otalgia is a challenging symptom, with the burden on the physician to identify the source. Only by careful patient history and physical examination can all causes in this extensive differential diagnosis be excluded. In the absence of primary otologic pathology, referred pain from a head and neck carcinoma must be considered foremost and ruled out.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities experience high rates of untreated oral disease and lower dental care use than the general population. Special Olympics Special Smiles (SOSS) provides community-based dental screenings, oral hygiene instruction, and referrals to improve access to care. This study estimated the oral health and economic impact of SOSS screening and referral activities.
METHODS: We developed a decision model to compare outcomes for people who participated in SOSS and those who did not. The model used program and national data to estimate dental

Background and Objectives: Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease and a leading cause of tooth loss worldwide. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as probing and radiographic assessment, are retrospective and fail to detect ongoing disease activity. In recent years, salivary biomarkers and oral microbiome profiling have emerged as promising tools for earlier detection and precision-based management. The aim of this review is to synthesize current evidence on salivary and microbiome-derived biomarkers in periodontitis and to evaluate their translational potential in diagnostics

Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress (SMARD1) is a lethal infantile disease, characterized by the loss of motor neurons leading to muscular atrophy, diaphragmatic paralysis, and weakness in the trunk and limbs. Mutations in IGHMBP2, a ubiquitously expressed DNA/RNA helicase, have been shown to cause a wide spectrum of motor neuron disease. Though mutations in IGHMBP2 are mostly associated with SMARD1, milder alleles cause the axonal neuropathy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2S (CMT2S), and some null alleles are potentially a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

PURPOSE: To compare radiographic predictors of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in dental extraction sites.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one oncological patients undergoing intravenous or subcutaneous antiresorptive treatment, with a history of dental extraction visualised by panoramic imaging, were included in this retrospective study. Age-, sex- and extracted tooth-matched healthy patients who had previously undergone panoramic imaging were selected as controls (n = 57). A total of 288 extraction sites were independently evaluated by two oral and maxillofacial radiologists, who a

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its relation to specific RA characteristics.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Within the oral examination, the need for dental (carious teeth showing cavitation) and periodontal treatment (presence of a probing depth ≥ 3.5 mm) and the number of missing teeth (M-T) were recorded. OHRQoL was assessed with the German short version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP G14). The disease activity score (DAS28-ESR), disease duration, number of swollen/pa

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to describe the lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and urodynamic findings in Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease patients referred to our Urology Department.
METHODS: Retrospective study of those patients with CMT disease diagnosed at the Neurology Department of our Tertiary Hospital and referred to our Urology Department since 2008 due to LUTS. We reviewed their clinical charts regarding the age at CMT disease diagnosis, type of CMT disease and the presence of other comorbidities which could cause LUTS. We collected data on the characterization of LUTS, findings of

Periodontal disease is a prevalent chronic inflammatory condition characterised by an aberrant host response to a pathogenic plaque biofilm resulting in local tissue damage and frustrated healing that can result in tooth loss. Cysteine proteases (gingipains) from the key periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis have been implicated in periodontal disease pathogenesis by inhibiting inflammation resolution and are linked with systemic chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Efficient clearance of apoptotic cells is essential for the resolution of inflammation and tissu

Information about periodontal disease patterns among the populations of developing countries is limited. These populations may illustrate the natural history of the disease owing to low or virtually no access to dental care, contributing to a more complete understanding of the disease process. The present study aimed to describe the patterns of periodontal loss of attachment (LOA) among representative middle-aged Vietnamese adults. A multi-stage, stratified random sampling technique was employed in two randomly selected provinces. The US NIDR protocol with two sites per tooth for the whole mou
