In the case of a 21-year old woman, who complained of chronic pelvic pain and where cystic structures in the adnexal region had been diagnosed ultrasonically and by laparoscopy, a tumour made up of many small cysts was discovered in the pouch of Douglas next to a typical endometrial cyst. We investigated changes in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) in response to inhaling ultrasonically nebulized 4.5% saline in 10 normal subjects and 68 subjects with asthma. In cases of fetal neural-tube defects macrophages are present in the amniotic fluid. We found that these viable phagocytic cells take up neutral-red and are easily identified as "red cells" by microscopic examination. In a randomized retrospective study we followed hips classified as Type II a by ultrasound. The classification as "Type IIa" only was found inadequate. It is important to further differentiate the so-called physiologically immature hip, namely to distinguish between joints that, while immature, are appropriate for age [Type IIa(+)], and those hips with a maturation deficit exceeding a tolerable degree [Type IIa(-)]. The follow-up showed that hips classified as Type IIa(-) and treated before the age of 6 weeks had a clearly better healing result than the hips treated only after the sixth week.

All 1358 referrals for barium enemas at Bristol Royal Infirmary in 1981 were studied. The overall diagnostic yield for colonic or distal ileal pathology was 33% with 75 (5.5%) cancers detected. General practitioner requested enemas constituted 25.8% of the total undertaken and their diagnostic yield was equal to hospital outpatient requested enemas. Despite the very high prevalence of gallstone disease, studies of familial factors are very few, and asymptomatic family members were not studied. We studied, in a prospective manner, the frequency of gallstones in 171 first-degree relatives of patients with proven gallstones compared with 200 matched controls.
