Non-pharmacological interventions for chronic pain in people with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is frequent in persons living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Conventionally, the pain is treated pharmacologically, yet long-term pain medication is often refractory and associated with side effects. Non-pharmacological interventions are frequently advocated, although the benefit and harm profiles of these treatments are not well established, in part because of methodological weaknesses of available studies. OBJECTIVES: To critically appraise and synthesise available research evidence on the effects of non-pharmacological interventions for the treatment of chronic neu

The impact of integrative medicine on quality of life in patients with diabetes mellitus and cancer.

PURPOSE: Integrative complementary medicine (ICM) combines complementary therapies with conventional supportive and palliative care to address quality of life (QoL). Diabetes mellitus (DM) is prevalent among patients with cancer and has been associated with worse health-related QoL. We examined the impact of an ICM program on QoL-related concerns among patients being treated for cancer, with vs. without DM. METHODS: This prospective, controlled and pragmatic study examined a 6-week ICM program, comparing DM to non-DM patients using the ESAS (Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale) and EORTC QLQ-C3

Investigating the events that predispose vulnerable and feared self-concepts in obsessive-compulsive disorder: A qualitative analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The feared self-concept, the self that a person fears they may be or could become, has been increasingly shown to drive the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is proposed that the feared self develops from a vulnerable self-concept, which itself is a result of normative self-concept development being disrupted by negative early life experiences. However, it is currently unclear which experiences lead to the development of vulnerable self-concept in people with OCD. This study aimed to describe the events and life experiences that people with OCD

Comparing the influence of foot reflexology and fasting mimicking diet on quality of life and sleep quality in obesity hypoventilation syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Obesity hypoventilation syndrome is one of the most serious outcomes of obesity-related respiratory difficulties, resulting in higher healthcare costs as well as increased cardio-respiratory morbidity and mortality. METHODS: Sixty-two males who had a high risk of obstructive sleep apnea according to the STOP-BANG Sleep Apnea Questionnaire were enrolled in the study. Their age is 50-60 years old, and they have a BMI of 35-40 kg/m2, daytime hypercapnia, and sleep breathing problems. The patients were divided into two equal groups at random reflexology fasting-mimicking diet groups.

A Contemporary Review of Behcet's Syndrome.

Behcet's syndrome (BS) is a chronic systemic inflammatory vasculitis with a wide range of clinical manifestations including recurrent oral and genital ulcers; cutaneous lesions; and ophthalmic, neurologic, and gastrointestinal involvement. BS has a global distribution but is particularly prevalent in so-called Silk Road populations. Disease onset is usually around the third or fourth decade of life, and the sex ratio is roughly 1:1. Both environmental and genetic factors contribute to the etiology of BS, although the detailed mechanisms remain unclear. At present, there is no laboratory examin

Patient-specific 3-dimensionally printed models for neurosurgical planning and education.

OBJECTIVE: Advances in 3-dimensional (3D) printing technology permit the rapid creation of detailed anatomical models. Integration of this technology into neurosurgical practice is still in its nascence, however. One potential application is to create models depicting neurosurgical pathology. The goal of this study was to assess the clinical value of patient-specific 3D printed models for neurosurgical planning and education. METHODS: The authors created life-sized, patient-specific models for 4 preoperative cases. Three of the cases involved adults (2 patients with petroclival meningioma and

Low muscle mass and strength in pediatrics patients: Why should we care?

Skeletal muscle plays major roles in metabolism and overall health across the lifecycle. Emerging evidence indicates that prenatal (maternal diet during pregnancy and genetic defects) and postnatal factors (physical activity, hormones, dietary protein, and obesity) influence muscle mass acquisition and strength early in life. As a consequence, low muscle mass and strength contributes to several adverse health outcomes during childhood. Specifically, studies demonstrated inverse associations of muscle mass and strength to single and clustered metabolic risk factors. The literature also consiste
