The projections of the olfactory bulb, the primordial dorsal, piriform and hippocampal pallia, and of the dorsal thalamus were studied in the lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and HRP coupled to the wheat germ agglutinin (WGA-HRP). There was obtained an experimental morphological evidence of the presence of the direct thalamo-telencephalic projections in this vertebrate species. The anterior and posterior parts of the dorsal thalamic nucleus, the nucleus of Bellonci, the primordial geniculate bodies, the rostral part of the midbrain were identified as the sources

OBJECTIVE: Skeletal transverse metaphyseal and vertebral lines, seen frequently on radiographs of infants and children, are usually believed to result from interrupted bone growth. Such lines have not been systematically studied in neonates. Accordingly, I determined the prevalence of growth lines on chest radiographs of newborn infants and assayed the gestational and obstetric abnormalities that occurred with these infants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chest radiographs were obtained (over a 4-year period) in 3687 neonates within the first 48 hr after birth for clinical indications. A single obser

The lung of a snake, the black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis), has been investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. This species has only one lung, the right, which is long and occupies most of the pleuro-peritoneal cavity. Grossly, the lung could be divided into two discrete anatomical regions: an anterior respiratory area made up of a honeycomb network of capillary-bearing partitions, and a posterior membranous saccular region. The exchange region consisted of a central air duct, the bronchus, which was delineated both dorsally and laterally by morphologically and spatially

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a candidate as a neurotransmitter in the vertebrate retina. The GABA analogue muscimol has been used to probe the properties of GABA receptors in other parts of the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS). We thus used 3H-muscimol to investigate potential GABA receptors in the retinas of goldfish and chick by means of biochemical assay techniques and light microscopic autoradiography. In both animals 3H-muscimol shows specific and saturable binding with a dissociation constant (KD) of about 10 nM. GABA effectively inhibits 3H-muscimol binding at 50% inhibitory

Edhazardia aedis is an obligate intracellular microsporidian parasite of the arthropod vector Aedes aegypti, which is responsible for the spread of several vertebrate pathogens of global health importance. E. aedis can be highly virulent to A. aegypti and infection has severely detrimental effects on multiple A. aegypti life history traits, including longevity, body size, propensity to host-seek and blood-feed, and reproductive capacity. Herein, we queried the effect of E. aedis infection on the bacterial microbiota of adult female A. aegypti using high-throughput amplicon sequencing of the 16

Stress disturbs physiological and psychological homeostasis across species. In mammals, stress reduces male courtship motivation, but the underlying neuronal mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we establish a Drosophila model in which confinement to a small space without complete immobilization-termed small-space (SS) stress-suppresses male courtship behavior. Because stress modulates dopamine signaling in both vertebrates and invertebrates, we examined its role in SS-stress-induced courtship suppression. Pharmacological inhibition and genetic manipulations revealed that dopamine synthe

Skeletal muscle atrophy, resulting from an imbalance in muscle protein synthesis and degradation, compromises muscle quality and function, imposing significant burdens on movement and metabolic stability. Animal models are crucial for understanding the mechanisms of skeletal muscle atrophy and developing clinical prevention and treatment strategies. Zebrafish, as small aquatic vertebrates, exhibit high genetic homology with humans and offer advantages such as rapid reproduction, development, and transparent embryos. Their physiological and anatomical similarities to mammals, including a substa

Body fossils set limits on feasible reconstructions of functional capacity and behavior in theropod dinosaurs, but do not document in-life behaviors. In contrast, trace fossils such as footprints preserve in-life behaviors that can potentially test and enhance existing reconstructions. Here, we demonstrate how theropod trackways can be used as indirect evidence of pre-avian aerial behavior, expanding the approaches available to study vertebrate flight origins. This involved exploring the behavioral implications of a two-toed Cretaceous-aged theropod trackway produced by a small, bird-like micr

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) is one of autoimmune inflammatory diseases and is characterized by area postrema syndrome, brainstem syndrome, optic neuritis, and/or myelitis. Typical myelitis is longitudinally extended transverse myelitis (LETM) which extends over three vertebral bodies. Several previous case reports have suggested association between cancer and NMOSD. A 50-year-old woman had breast cancer and underwent mastectomy and, 10 months later, she had developed acutely progressive dysbasia. Spine MRI showed LETM in 13 vertebrae length and blood test revealed positive

Toxoplasma gondii is the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, a common zoonotic disease affecting vertebrates with high global incidence. For the parasite to disseminate throughout the body, it crosses the intestinal barrier, triggering inflammatory reactions. This study aimed to assess the tissue response in the ileum and colon of mice following chronic infection with T. gondii. Fourteen mice were divided into two groups: the infected group received 1000 T. gondii oocysts via gavage, and after 60 days, the mice were euthanized. The ileum and colon were collected and processed for histological an

Spinal injuries or diseases necessitate effective fusion solutions, and common clinical approaches involve autografts, allografts, and various bone matrix products, each with limitations. To address these challenges, we developed an innovative moldable click chemistry polymer cement that can be shaped by hand and self-cross-linked in situ for spinal fusion. This self-cross-linking cement, enabled by the bioorthogonal click reaction, excludes the need for toxic initiators or external energy sources. The bioactivity of the cement was promoted by incorporating nanohydroxyapatite and microspheres

Transthyretin amyloidosis is a severe pathology characterized by the progressive accumulation of transthyretin (TTR) in various organs and tissues. This highly conserved through vertebrate evolution protein transports thyroid hormone thyroxine. In our bodies, TTR can interact with a large number of molecules, including ω-3 and ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that are broadly used as food supplies. In this study, we investigated the effect of ω-3 and ω-6 PUFAs, as well as their fully saturated analog, on TTR aggregation. Our results showed that both ω-3 and ω-6 PUFAs strongly decreased

Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, is an essential nutrient that plays a crucial role in energy metabolism and overall health. It is a water-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in the conversion of carbohydrates into energy in the body. Thiamine is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system, heart and muscles. Thiamine deficiency is a life-threatening disease that leads to various disorders and lesions in the nerves and brain, at least in vertebrates. Several thiamine precursors with higher bioavailability have been developed to compensate for thiamine deficiency, inc

Limb loss due to traumatic injury or amputation is a major biomedical burden. Many vertebrates exhibit the ability to form and pattern normal limbs during embryogenesis from amorphous clusters of precursor cells, hinting that this process could perhaps be activated later in life to rebuild missing or damaged limbs. Indeed, some animals, such as salamanders, are proficient regenerators of limbs throughout their life span. Thus, research over the last century has sought to stimulate regeneration in species that do not normally regenerate their appendages. Importantly, these efforts are not only

An expanding array of image-guided spine interventions have the potential to provide immediate and effective pain relief. Innovations in spine intervention have proceeded rapidly, with clinical adoption of new techniques at times occurring before the development of bodies of evidence to establish efficacy. Although new spine interventions have been evaluated by clinical trials, acceptance of results has been hindered by controversies regarding trial methodology. This article explores controversial aspects of four categories of image-guided interventions for painful conditions: spine interventi

As a critical evolutionary pivot between invertebrates and vertebrates, lampreys provide rich genetic information. Lamprey immune protein (LIP) is a key immune regulator. MicroRNAs, well-conserved in the response to immunological stress, remain understudied in lamprey immunity. We generated a lamprey microRNA expression atlas, using deep sequencing, upon Vibrio anguillarum infection. Using comparative methods, we found that miR-4561 potentially regulates innate immunity via interaction with lip. We found a sequence in the 3'-UTR region of LIP mRNA complementary to the miR-4561 seed region; miR

Spondylo-epimetaphyseal dysplasia Matrilin 3 type (SEMD) is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia characterized by short stature, abnormalities in the vertebral bodies and long bones, especially the lower limbs. We enrolled a consanguineous family from Pakistan in which multiple siblings suffered from severe skeletal dysplasia. The six affected subjects ranged in heights from 100 to 136 cm (~-6 standard deviation). Lower limb abnormalities with variable varus and valgus deformities and joint dysplasia were predominant features of the clinical presentation. Whole exome sequencing (WES)

The ossification centers onset of the quail vertebrae, ribs, and sternum in embryos and hatchling birds was studied. Specimens were cleared, stained with Alcian Blue and Alizarin Red S and examined using stereomicroscope. The chondral rudiments of the vertebrae were observed at the 6th day of incubation (E6). The osteogenesis of the vertebrae was accomplished with both perichondral and endochondral ossifications. The cervical vertebrae began to ossify at E9-E10, whereas the thoracic ones began at E10-E11. The synsacral vertebrae began to ossify at E11-E13. In the caudal vertebrae, ossification

Diagnosis of extramedullary spinal diseases is often complex, firstly requiring a good anatomic knowledge for a precise localization of pathologies. The spinal canal, a tubular space delimited by vertebral bodies and neural arches, contains the spinal cord, nerve roots and cauda equina. Neural structures are surrounded and supported, from outer to inner, by meninges: dura, arachnoid and pia mater; meningeal layers divide extramedullary spaces in epidural, subdural and subarachnoid. Extramedullary diseases may be broadly classified in degenerative, neoplastic, traumatic, infective or miscellane
