Developmental auditory deprivation in one ear impairs brainstem binaural processing and reduces spatial hearing acuity.

Early sensory experience can exert lasting perceptual consequences. For example, a brief period of auditory deprivation early in life can lead to persistent spatial hearing deficits. Some forms of hearing loss (i.e., conductive; CHL) can distort acoustical cues needed for spatial hearing, which depend on inputs from both ears. We hypothesize that asymmetric acoustic input during development disrupts auditory circuits that integrate binaural information. Here, we identify prolonged maturation of the binaural auditory brainstem in the guinea pig by tracking auditory evoked potentials across deve

Evaluation of a Photopolymerized Gelatin Hydrogel Network with bFGF-Loaded Alginate Microspheres for Tympanic Membrane Perforation Repair in Rats.

Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) often leads to hearing loss and requires effective repair strategies. However, existing surgical options are invasive and lack ideal biomaterials for scaffold-based healing. Herein, we present a custom-engineered mechano-acoustic responsive hydrogel incorporating bFGF-loaded sodium alginate microspheres, designed for controlled drug release and tissue regeneration under dual stimulation: vibrational simulation and low-frequency acoustic waves (generated by radio devices) - representing its first transition from in vitro characterization to in vivo regenerati

Effects of sitting, supine, and prone postures on nasal patency in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Studies have found that in healthy individuals without nasal disease, changes in posture cause an increase in nasal resistance, especially in the prone posture. Many patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) sleep in a prone posture, but no studies have examined the effect of this change in posture on nasal resistance in patients with OSAS. Therefore, we conducted this study to investigate this posture-related physical phenomenon in individuals with OSAS. METHODS: We evaluated the nasal patency of 29 patients diagnosed with OSAS using the visual analog scale (VAS), aco

Advances in acupuncture treatment for tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the abnormal perception of sound in the absence of a corresponding external acoustic stimulus, which seriously affects the patients' quality of life, physical and mental health, and the safety of life. There is almost no effective cure for tinnitus, primarily due to its complicated etiopathogenesis and unclear mechanisms. As a major and ancient physical therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture has been widely used in tinnitus because of its simple operation, rapid effect, and low cost. This paper reviews the relevant literature on the treatment of different kinds of tin

Endolymphatic Sac and Duct as an Anatomic Repair to Achieve Complete Exposure of the Internal Auditory Canal Through the Retrosigmoid Approach: Anatomic Study.

BACKGROUND: The retrosigmoid approach (RSA) is used in a wide variety of diseases in the cerebellopontine angle, and according to the findings, it can preserve hearing function during the resection of vestibular schwannomas. Complete exposure of the fundus of the internal auditory canal (IAC) could jeopardize the integrity of the otic capsule and subsequently cause profound hearing loss and chronic disabling vertigo. Great variability has been described in labyrinthine structures and to date there are no clear data on the distances of these structures to safely expose the IAC fundus. METHODS:

Spontaneous Bleeding in Vestibular Schwannoma in Patients on Oral Anticoagulant Therapy: Report of Two Cases and Review of Literature.

OBJECTIVE: Anticoagulant therapy is a risk factor for repeated intratumoral hemorrhage and acute enlargement of a vestibular schwannoma (VS) with neurological deficits. Therefore, we describe two cases of patients on oral anticoagulant therapy with intratumoral hemorrhage in which anticoagulant therapy prior to surgical resection was discontinued. We also discuss other similar cases from the literature since this is a rare event. CASE REPORTS: We described the two cases of intratumoral hemorrhage in acoustic neurinoma and conducted a literature review of similar cases of patients with intratu

Injectable hydrogel microsphere-bomb for MRSA-infected chronic osteomyelitis.

Biofilm and bone tissue defect induced by the bacterial infection severely impede chronic osteomyelitis treatment. It is critical to break though the densely and obstinate biofilm so that the target drugs can deliver to the infected bone more effectively. Herein, an acoustically responsive multifunctional hydrogel microsphere-bomb (EMgel) was designed and prepared by microfluidic technology, which could be injected to the focus of bone infection, and blasted into the nidus deeply to destroy the bacterial biofilm matrix barrier under penetrating ultrasound, so the encapsulated natural polypheno

Integrated Photoacoustic, Ultrasound, and Angiographic Tomography (PAUSAT) for NonInvasive Whole-Brain Imaging of Ischemic Stroke.

Presented here is an experimental ischemic stroke study using our newly developed noninvasive imaging system that integrates three acoustic-based imaging technologies: photoacoustic, ultrasound, and angiographic tomography (PAUSAT). Combining these three modalities helps acquire multi-spectral photoacoustic tomography (PAT) of the brain blood oxygenation, high-frequency ultrasound imaging of the brain tissue, and acoustic angiography of the cerebral blood perfusion. The multi-modal imaging platform allows the study of cerebral perfusion and oxygenation changes in the whole mouse brain after st

Precise sound characteristics drive plasticity in the primary auditory cortex with VNS-sound pairing.

INTRODUCTION: Repeatedly pairing a tone with vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) alters frequency tuning across the auditory pathway. Pairing VNS with speech sounds selectively enhances the primary auditory cortex response to the paired sounds. It is not yet known how altering the speech sounds paired with VNS alters responses. In this study, we test the hypothesis that the sounds that are presented and paired with VNS will influence the neural plasticity observed following VNS-sound pairing. METHODS: To explore the relationship between acoustic experience and neural plasticity, responses were reco

Effects of Noise Exposure and Ageing on Anxiety and Social Behaviour in Zebrafish.

Noise pollution is creating a wide range of health problems related to physiological stress and anxiety that impact the social life of vertebrates, including humans. Ageing is known to be associated with changes in susceptibility to acoustic stimuli; however, the interaction between noise effects and senescence is not well understood. We tested the effects of 24 h continuous white noise (150 dB re 1 Pa) on both young adults and old zebrafish in terms of anxiety (novel tank diving test), social interactions (with mirror/conspecific attraction), and shoaling behaviour. Both noise and ageing indu

Distinct functional levels of human voice processing in the auditory cortex.

Voice signaling is integral to human communication, and a cortical voice area seemed to support the discrimination of voices from other auditory objects. This large cortical voice area in the auditory cortex (AC) was suggested to process voices selectively, but its functional differentiation remained elusive. We used neuroimaging while humans processed voices and nonvoice sounds, and artificial sounds that mimicked certain voice sound features. First and surprisingly, specific auditory cortical voice processing beyond basic acoustic sound analyses is only supported by a very small portion of t

The sound of a Martian dust devil.

Dust devils (convective vortices loaded with dust) are common at the surface of Mars, particularly at Jezero crater, the landing site of the Perseverance rover. They are indicators of atmospheric turbulence and are an important lifting mechanism for the Martian dust cycle. Improving our understanding of dust lifting and atmospheric transport is key for accurate simulation of the dust cycle and for the prediction of dust storms, in addition to being important for future space exploration as grain impacts are implicated in the degradation of hardware on the surface of Mars. Here we describe the

Traffic Flow Detection Using Camera Images and Machine Learning Methods in ITS for Noise Map and Action Plan Optimization.

Noise maps and action plans represent the main tools in the fight against citizens' exposure to noise, especially that produced by road traffic. The present and the future in smart traffic control is represented by Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which however have not yet been sufficiently studied as possible noise-mitigation tools. However, ITS dedicated to traffic control rely on models and input data that are like those required for road traffic noise mapping. The present work developed an instrumentation based on low-cost cameras and a vehicle recognition and counting methodolog
