From 1988 to 1989, we operated on 784 women in our daily ambulant clinic. In 462 of these cases, we performed laparoscopic surgery with 679 therapeutical interventions. Sterilisation is the most frequent operation in our cases of Fallopian tube surgery, but we have also had tubal pregnancy in 5 cases. In ovarian surgery, we found a great number of benign ovarian cysts followed by a high rate of ovarian adhesions, which, counted together with the Fallopian tube and intestinal adhesions, amounted to 201 cases. This report presents results of a descriptive study to estimate the mortality rate, identify the type and the causes of maternal deaths. The study was conducted in 1987 in Kampala hospitals for a period covering seven years from 1st January 1980 to 31st December, 1986. The non abortion maternal mortality rate (NAMMR) was 2.65 per 1000 deliveries while the abortion related maternal mortality rate (ARMMR) was 3.58 per 1000 abortions. Ninety patients with chronic venous ulceration were investigated to determine the extent of the incompetence of the venous valves. The benefit of an organized neonatal transport system is well established. Over a 30 month period, January 1987 to June 1989, 172 babies were transported to the Dublin maternity hospitals. Birth weights ranged from 640 to 5,180g 106 (62%) were less than 37 weeks gestation. In this report, 100 knees in 77 patients, with an average age of 65, were followed for a period between five and 10 years. Rheumatoid arthritis was the diagnosis in 43 patients and osteoarthritis in 34 patients. The majority had varus, valgus, and biplane deformities. The extent of osseous pelvic injury in patients suffering multiple organ trauma is difficult to assess. However, accurate information is essential in order to determine an acceptable treatment regimen, either operative (external or internal fixation), or nonoperative (bed rest and early ambulation). Postoperative pain relief was studied in 280 patients undergoing various kinds of surgery, e.g., thoracic, upper and lower abdominal, perineal, obstetric, and orthopedic. The effects of Ro 12-4713, a vasodilator, on blood pressure and heart rate, were tested in 13 ambulant patients with mild to severe hypertension. The results of 189 Brunswik total hip replacements, performed at the Orthopaedic Hospital of the Invalid Foundation, Helsinki, Finland, and followed up for 2-3 years, are presented.
