OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and cause of an echogenic nodule in the distal end of the common bile duct seen on sonograms in patients who have AIDS-related cholangitis.

We have applied a specific and accurate high pressure liquid chromatographic technique to determine fasting serum glycine and taurine conjugates of individual bile acids in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis before and during ursodeoxycholic acid therapy. Operated on were 165 elderly and 68 young patients for calculous cholecystitis complicated by choledocholithiasis and obstructive jaundice. An experience with the treatment of 83 patients with recurrent jaundice or jaundice developed after operations on the liver, extrahepatic bile ducts and gallbladder was used by the authors for an analysis of causes of the appearance of jaundice, diagnosis and treatment of such patients. We investigated the effects of bile duct ligation on alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities in liver, calvarium, duodenum, and ileum in rats and its possible mechanism of action. ALP isozyme activities in the ligated rats were significantly elevated in the liver and duodenum, while those in the ileum and calvarium were markedly decreased.
