Gestational weight gain in uncomplicated twin pregnancies by pre-pregnancy body mass index.

In 2009, the Institute of Medicine provided provisional guidelines for gestational weight gain (GWG) in twin gestations, citing limited research. We examined GWG by pre-pregnancy body mass index in a retrospective cohort of twin births uncomplicated by infant mortality, preterm birth, or low birth weight from Massachusetts in 2006-2017 (N = 273). Median (inter-quartile range [IQR]) GWG was 20.4 kg (IQR: 17.2-25.9 kg) for women who were normal weight pre-pregnancy, 21.3 kg (IQR: 17.2-25.9 kg) for women with overweight pre-pregnancy, and 13.6 kg (IQR: 8.6-20.9 kg) for women with obesity pre-preg…

Pro-inflammatory diet during pregnancy is associated with large-for-gestational-age infants.

A pro-inflammatory diet in pregnant women is associated with an increased risk of harmful maternal and fetal health outcomes. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between the maternal energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) and the classification of birth weight of newborns. We hypothesized that a maternal pro-inflammatory diet would be associated with a higher chance of inadequate birth weight infants. A prospective cohort study was conducted among 600 mother-infant pairs in Brazil. The E-DII was calculated through 24-hour dietary recalls on 2 occassions, using 3…

First trimester maternal vitamin D, ferritin, hemoglobin level and their associations with neonatal birthweight: Result from cohort study on vitamin D status and its impact during pregnancy and childhood in Indonesia.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D deficiency and anemia are examples of nutritional problems of global health significance. When these health issues effect pregnant women, they may become a threat to the fetus' potention for intrauterine growth. It has been known that the first trimester is the golden period of fetal programming which influences the fetuses and their life after birth. This study was aiming to analyze the association between first trimester maternal vitamin D, serum ferritin, hemoglobin level and neonatal birth weight. METHODS: From July 2016 a prospective cohort of pregnant women had b…

Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy for Hydrocephalus in Infants: A Single-center Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Hydrocephalus remains one of the more common pathologies managed in pediatric neurosurgery. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) has become the procedure of choice for the treatment of hydrocephalus due to aqueductal stenosis with high success rate. It has an advantage over ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting, as it enables patients to remain device free. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to assess the role of ETV in the treatment of hydrocephalus in children under 1 year of age, including preterm low birth weight infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study of 30…

Smoke-Free Legislation in Spain and Prematurity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Spain implemented a partial smoking ban in 2006 followed by a comprehensive ban in 2011. The objective was to examine the association between these smoke-free policies and different perinatal complications. METHODS: Cross-sectional study including all live births between 2000 and 2013. Selected adverse birth outcomes were: preterm births (<37 gestational weeks), small for gestational age (SGA; <10th weight percentile according to Spanish reference tables), and low birth weight (<2500 g). We estimated immediate and gradual rate changes after smoking bans by using over…

Maternal exposure to air pollutants during the first trimester and foetal growth in Japanese term infants.

Evidence supporting an inverse association between maternal exposure to air pollutants and foetal growth has been accumulating. However, the … As proxy markers of foetal growth restriction, we used small for gestational age (SGA), and adverse birth weight (low birth weight in addition to SGA). For pollutant exposure during the entire pregnancy, we did not observe the association with SGA and adverse birth weight. In the single-trimester model for the first trimester, however, we found a positive asso …

Adolescent pregnancy: maternal weight effects on fetal heaviness: possible route to improved outcomes.

In a previous report of a zinc supplementation trial in pregnant adolescents zinc effect varied according to maternal weight (wt) status--normal (90-110% of expected wt), light or heavy, prompting this analysis of effects of wt status and gestational wt gain on fetal heaviness relative to length and gestational age (GA) and other pregnancy outcomes. One-third of adolescents shifted in or out of normal wt by delivery, creating seven outcome groups--light-light, light to normal, normal to light, normal-normal, normal to heavy, heavy to normal, and heavy-heavy. These wt class change groups varied

Risk factors for the development and progression of retinopathy of prematurity in preterm infants in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Risk factors other than supplemental oxygen might play a role in the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). In Indonesia ROP occurs in infants up to 34 weeks and 2000 g. Risk factors for the development of ROP in Indonesian NICUs have not been evaluated. Our aim was to identify other risk factors than the use of oxygen in the development and progression of ROP in preterm infants in Indonesia. METHODOLOGY: Data on 98 preterm infants with ROP and 77 controls were collected from four NICUs and two eye centers in Jakarta, Indonesia, between 2009 and 2014. We used multivariat

Primipaternities and human birthweights.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate in singleton multiparous pregnancies the effect of having a new father for an index pregnancy on new-borns' birth … hat primiparas have lighter babies than multiparas. Primipaternity represents also a risk for lower birth weights. Human birthweight seems to be linked with a "couple habituation" (to paternal genes) which may be not fully established in the first pregnancy of the couple.

Risk stratification for small for gestational age for the Brazilian population: a secondary analysis of the Birth in Brazil study.

Risk-stratification screening for SGA has been proposed in high-income countries to prevent perinatal morbidity and mortality. There is paucity of data from middle-income settings. The aim of this study is to explore risk factors for SGA in Brazil and assess potential for risk stratification. This population-based study is a secondary analysis of Birth in Brazil study, conducted in 266 maternity units between 2011 and 2012. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed, and population attributable fraction estimated for early and all pregnancy factors. We calculated absolute
