As the population of people aged 60 or older continues to rise, it has become increasingly important to understand the molecular basis under … s, with certain regions (e.g. frontal and temporal regions) being more vulnerable than others (e.g. brain stem). Within the medial temporal lobe, the hippocampus is especially susceptible to age-related changes. The important role of the hippocampus in age-related cognitive decline and in vulnerability to disease processes such as Alzheimer's disease has pro …

The neural mechanism of skilled movements, such as reaching, has been considered to differ from that of rhythmic movement such as locomotion. It is generally thought that skilled movements are consciously controlled by the brain, while rhythmic movements are usually controlled autonomously by the spinal cord and brain stem. However, several studies in recent decades have suggested that neural networks in the spinal cord may also be involved in the generation of skilled movements. Moreover, a recent study revealed that neural activities in the motor cortex exhibit rhythmic oscillations correspo…

We present a case of a young woman with an immature teratoma of the right ovary that showed systemic metastases. The patient initially experienced abdominal distention at the age of 15 years. Radiographic assessment revealed a right ovarian tumor; thus, right salpingo-oophorectomy was performed, and the resected ovarian tumor showed a multilocular cystic lesion with partially solid areas. Pathologic diagnosis was an immature teratoma, grade 2. As brain, lung, and liver metastases were discovered within 2 years after the operation, sequential resections of the metastatic foci were performed bef

Neural precursor cell (NPC) transplantation may have a role in restoring brain function after stroke, but how aging might affect the brain's receptivity to such transplants is unknown. We reported previously that transplantation of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived NPCs together with biomaterial (Matrigel) scaffolding into the brains of young adult Sprague-Dawley rats 3 weeks after distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) reduced infarct volume and improved neurobehavioral performance. In this study, we compared the effect of NPC and Matrigel transplants in young adult (3-month-ol

Neural stem cells (NSCs) are the self-renewing, multipotent cells that generate neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes in the nervous system. Contrary to the long-held dogma, neurogenesis occurs in discrete areas of the adult brain, the hippocampus and the subventricular zone, and NSCs reside in the adult central nervous system. Recent studies have shown that neurogenesis is increased in the diseased brains, after strokes and traumatic brain injuries, and that new neuronal cells are generated at the sites of injury, where they replace some of the degenerated nerve cells. Thus, the central n

One hundred and six elderly patients with chronic stroke who were admitted to Seiai Rehabilitation Hospital were studied regarding urinary incontinence. The average age of the subjects was 74 +/- 8 years old, ranging from 60 to 94 years. Seventy three of the 106 patients (69%) had urinary incontinence which was found in 72% of brain infarction, 61% of brain hemorrhage and 67% of subarachnoid hemorrhage. The prevalence of urinary incontinence in cases of brain stem, thalamic, and putaminal hemorrhage was 80%, 67% and 46%, while that in cases of cortical infarction and infarct of perforating art…

The author analysed the postoperative complications and the errors in their recognition as well as neglects and omissions of the postoperative management of 49 of 755 patients subjected to operation for a craniocerebral injury. In 6.5% of cases, the postoperative period was characterized by a complicated course. Inspection of the wound in 40 patients and brain autopsy in 9 patients who had died without undergoing a repeated intervention revealed large hemorrhage in 29 (57%) and edema of the brain in 20 (43%) cases. In 7 patients, the condition deteriorated due to dislocation of the median-stem

Current acute ischemic stroke treatment is limited to reperfusion therapies within the first hours after the onset, underscoring the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies to mitigate the progression of the brain lesion. Here, we describe the development of bio-inspired synthetic nanoshuttles-lipid nanoparticles (LNPs)-designed to deliver miRNAs and target post-stroke inflammation, a key contributor to secondary brain damage. miRNAs isolated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) were encapsulated into LNPs prepared by a microfluidic technique. We produced small sized, unifor

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has deficits in emotional processing, which is one of the most common abnormalities in ASD social skills. Studies have shown that negative emotions seem to stimulate brain activity more effectively. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the neural mechanisms underlying the abnormal performance of ASD in processing negative emotions. Considering the various results on negative emotions due to factors such as experimental paradigms and sample sizes, meta-analysis can consolidate multiple studies to obtain more reliable conclusions and explore potential factors. BACKGROUND: Meige's syndrome (MS) is a neurologically disabling disorder characterized by visual impairment, mastication, and swallowing difficulties. Emerging evidence suggests that MS may stem from disturbances in brain networks. However, current literature inadequately probes the centrality and functional connectivity within these networks.
PURPOSE: This study aims to compare the brain networks of MS patients with those of healthy controls (HC). We focus on examining changes in intrinsic connectivity, the significance of nodes within the global brain network, and functional network connect

Congenital hydrocephalus, characterized by cerebral ventriculomegaly, is one of the most common reasons for paediatric brain surgery. Recent studies have implicated lin-41 (lineage variant 41)/TRIM71 (tripartite motif 71) as a candidate congenital hydrocephalus risk gene; however, TRIM71 variants have not been systematically examined in a large patient cohort or conclusively linked with an OMIM syndrome. Through cross-sectional analysis of the largest assembled cohort of patients with cerebral ventriculomegaly, including neurosurgically-treated congenital hydrocephalus (totalling 2697 parent-p

The brain is a highly organized, dynamic system whose network architecture is often assessed through resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) functional connectivity. The functional interactions between brain areas, including those observed during rest, are assumed to stem from the collective influence of action potentials carried by long-range neural projections. However, the contribution of individual neurons to brain-wide functional connectivity has not been systematically assessed. Here we developed a method to concurrently measure and compare the spiking activity of local neur

Despite major advances in neuroscience, a comprehensive understanding of the structural and functional components of the adult brain compartments remains to be fully elucidated at a quantitative molecular level. Indeed, over half of the soluble- and membrane-annotated proteins are currently unmapped within online digital brain atlases. In this study, two complementary approaches were used to assess the unique repertoire of proteins enriched within select regions of the adult mouse CNS, including the brain stem, cerebellum, and remaining brain hemispheres. Of the 1200 proteins visualized by 2D-…

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIA (MPSIIIA) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in N-sulfoglucosamine sulfohydrolase (SGSH), resulting in heparan sulfate (HS) accumulation and progressive neurodegeneration. There are no treatments. We previously demonstrated improved neuropathology in MPSIIIA mice using lentiviral vectors (LVs) overexpressing SGSH in wild-type (WT) hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplants (HSCTs), achieved via donor monocyte/microglial engraftment in the brain. However, neurological disease was not corrected using LVs in autologous MPSIIIA HSCTs. To improve brai
