A programme to control taeniasis-cysticercosis (T. solium): experiences in a Mexican village.

A study was carried out in a rural community of the state of Guerrero in order to find ways to control human taeniasis/cysticercosis (Taenia solium). At the beginning of the study the frequency of porcine cysticercosis was established to be around 6.6%. Fecal examination in the human population showed that of 760 persons, 24 were carriers of Taenia sp (3%). Of 440 human sera tested for antibodies against cysticercus cellulosae, 9 showed absorbance values of 0.2 or higher (2.3%). 900 persons received treatment against taeniasis. 400 soil samples and 600 flies were examined for the presence of e

Specificity of an isolated salivary factor material to cystic fibrosis.

An oyster gill ciliostatic factor material has been isolated from the saliva of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) by utilizing its ability to bind to alpha-amylase. It was quantitatively assayed by its ability to reversibly inhibit rabbit muscle glycogen debranching enzyme. The specificity of this CF factor material was investigated by comparing activities from the saliva of CF homozygotes (patients) varying in age, sex, and the severity of the disease; CF obligate heterozygotes (carriers); normal control subjects who had no family history of CF; non-CF asthmatic and allergic bronchitis patie

Radioimmunoassay for human myoglobin: methods and results in patients with skeletal muscle or myocardial disorders.

A sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay has been developed for the measurement of serum Mb. immunization of rabbit with human Mb yielded anti-Mb antibody which was purified by affinity chromatography. Human hemoglobin, CK, and the component of serum per se did not appear to cross-react with the antibody. Mb was radiolabeled by the chloramine T method. The radioimmunoassay method could detect as little as 0.3 ng of Mb and was not affected by hemolysis. Information is also given on precision, recovery, and specimen preservation. Mb levels could be detected in all of 120 normal adults, and the

Dynamic models of pneumococcal carriage and the impact of the Heptavalent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine on invasive pneumococcal disease.

BACKGROUND: The 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine has been introduced in national immunisation programmes of most industrialised countries and recently in two African GAVI eligible countries (Rwanda and The Gambia). However the long term effects of PCV are still unclear, as beneficial direct and herd immunity effects might be countered by serotype replacement. METHOD: A dynamic, age-structured, compartmental model of Streptococcus pneumoniae transmission was developed to predict the potential impact of PCV7 on the incidence of invasive disease accounting for both herd immunity and serot

Air pollution exposure is associated with MRSA acquisition in young U.S. children with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: The role of air pollution in increasing susceptibility to respiratory tract infections in the cystic fibrosis (CF) population has not been well described. We recently demonstrated that chronic PM2.5 exposure is associated with an increased risk of initial Pseudomonas aeruginosa acquisition in young children with CF. The purpose of this study was to determine whether PM2.5 exposure is a risk factor for acquisition of other respiratory pathogens in young children with CF. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of initial acquisition of methicillin susceptible and methicillin re

Development and validation of a risk prediction model for preterm birth in women concurrent with Hepatitis B virus carrier status and gestational diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a major adverse neonatal outcome that has been associated with maternal hepatitis B virus carrier status. Co-occurrence of hepatitis B virus carrier status carrier status and gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of preterm birth compared with hepatitis B virus carrier status alone. This study aimed to develop and externally validate a clinically applicable multivariable prediction model incorporating both clinical risk factors and maternal blood biomarkers to estimate preterm birth risk among women with concurrent hepatitis B virus car

Testing to Detect Candida auris Colonisation After Intrahospital Transfer From an Endemic Area, a Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Current international guidelines lack clear recommendations on the management of non-colonised patients undergoing intra-hospital transfer from the ward in which horizontal transmission of Candida auris is known to occur (defined as endemic for Candida auris) to wards with no horizontal transmission detected (defined as non-endemic wards), particularly regarding the timing and number of screening swabs needed to exclude colonisation. METHODS: Single-center prospective observational study at a tertiary-care hospital in Genoa, Italy, including adults transferred from the C. auris en

A Cross-Sectional Study to Determine Candida spp. Carriage in Libyan Patients With Type 2 Diabetes.

The risk for Candida infections in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is three times higher than in the general population. Despite a DM prevalence of 15.8% reported in Libya (2024), the laboratory identification and susceptibility testing of fungal infections in patients with DM are not routinely performed. This cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence and antifungal drug resistance patterns of Candida species in the oral mucosa of Libyan patients with Type 2 DM. Oral samples were collected with a sterile cotton swab, and 182 Candida isolates were phenotypically identified using th

The spectrum of nasal colonization: frequency and resistant patterns in diabetes versus non-diabetes population.

BACKGROUND: The nasal cavity serves as a primary contact site and is a common location for colonization by symbiotic, opportunistic, and potentially pathogenic bacteria. Diabetic patients are more susceptible to colonization by opportunistic microorganisms due to impaired immune function, altered normal flora, and increased exposure to healthcare. This study aimed to investigate the nasal colonization of Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Enterobacteriaceae) bacteria in diabetic and non-diabetic individuals, assessing phenotypic traits including antibiotic resistance and

Multicenter performance evaluation of the Simplexa C. auris Direct assay for the detection of Candida auris colonization in bilateral axilla/groin swabs.

UNLABELLED: Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen associated with healthcare outbreaks and high mortality. Its accurate and timely identification is critical for infection prevention, yet conventional culture-based methods are limited by slow growth, morphological ambiguity, and potential misidentification. This multicenter study evaluated the performance of the Simplexa C. auris Direct assay using 2,020 axilla/groin swab specimens collected from six clinical sites compared to culture followed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MAL

Intersecting realms of resistance: the epidemiology of Staphylococcus aureus carriage and multidrug resistance in primary healthcare settings in Recife, Brazil.

The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a critical threat to global health, with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) being a significant concern in both human and veterinary medicine. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic characteristics of S. aureus isolates from primary care units in Recife, Brazil, encompassing human, animal, and environmental samples. A total of 258 isolates were collected, with 97 confirmed as S. aureus through PCR targeting the nuc gene. The isolates were subjected to phenotypic and genotypic analyses to determine their resist

Relationship Between Group 3 Innate Lymphoid Cells and Th17 in Human Nasopharynx-Associated Lymphoid Tissue and the Association With Pneumococcal Carriage.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) in children is common and considered a prerequisite of invasive disease. Group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3) are considered critical in mucosal homeostasis. It is not known if ILC3 play a role in Sp carriage and how ILC3 interact with Sp in the nasopharynx. METHODS: We characterized ILC3 in the nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue of children and adults and examined the relationship of ILC3 with Th17 cells and Sp carriage. We also analyzed the effects of Sp and Staphylococcus aureus on ILC3. RESULTS: We show that the fre

Heterogeneous Salmonella typhi transmission within a household: genomic insights from a chronic carrier.

Introduction. Household outbreaks of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi) typically involve genetically similar strains, often within a 0-5 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) single linkage cluster. However, unusual genetic heterogeneity may indicate more complex transmission dynamics. This case represents an instance of household transmission facilitated by an asymptomatic carrier harbouring genetically diverse S. Typhi strains. A healthy adult developed severe typhoid requiring hospitalization, and two children required treatment. Public health epidemiological connections among the

Prevalence of rectal carbapenem resistant Enterobacterales carriage among patients attending healthcare facilities in Ibadan, Nigeria: a descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) infections are increasingly associated with or directly responsible for morbidity and mortality from bacterial infections in sub-Saharan Africa where there are limited antibiotic options. CRE rectal colonization of patients in healthcare facilities provides a reservoir of these organisms and could potentially cause invasive infections in these settings. The prevalence of rectal carriage among patients attending healthcare facilities in Nigeria has not been previously described. We set out to assess the prevalence of rectal CRE carriage an

Clonal Expansion of a Streptococcus pneumoniae Serotype 3 Capsule Variant Sequence Type 700 With Enhanced Vaccine Escape Potential After 13-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Introduction.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 3 remains a problem globally. Malawi introduced 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) in 2011, but there has been no direct protection against serotype 3 carriage. We explored whether vaccine escape by serotype 3 is due to clonal expansion of a lineage with a competitive advantage. METHODS: The distribution of serotype 3 Global Pneumococcal Sequence Clusters (GPSCs) and sequence types (STs) globally was assessed using sequences from the Global Pneumococcal Sequencing Project. Whole-genome sequences of 135 serotype 3 carriage isolates fr
