Massive pulmonary embolism due to hydatid cysts: A rare postoperative complication of liver echinococcosis.

Pulmonary embolism due to hydatid cysts is a very rare pathology. A 55-year-old male was transferred to our hospital due to respiratory failure, as a result of left pulmonary artery obstruction by cystic lesions. His medical history included multiple operations for abdominal echinococcosis. He was urgently operated for the extraction of the proximal hydatid cysts with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass with an excellent outcome and six months later through a right thoracotomy for the distal right pulmonary artery, the cysts were extracted. Meanwhile, he followed additional medication treatment

Gene expression in human liver fibrosis associated with Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato.

Liver fibrosis is a dynamic process that occurs in response to chronic liver disease resulting from factors such as chronic infections, autoimmune reactions, allergic responses, toxins, radiation, and infectious agents. Among the infectious agents, multicellular parasites cause chronic inflammation and fibrosis. Twenty-five patients with different stages of cystic echinococcosis (CE) were enrolled in the study. The expression of ACTA2, COL3A1, IFN-γ, MMP2, MMP9, TGF-β1, and TNF-α genes was determined by qRT-PCR in healthy and fibrotic liver tissue of the CE patients. TGF-β1 expression was eval

Comprehensive Account on Prevalence and Characteristics of Hydatid Cysts in Livestock from Pakistan.

Pakistan is at intersection of hyperendemic regions for hydatidosis. Current study aimed to determine the prevalence of hydatid cysts and cyst characteristics in different intermediate hosts (sheep, goats, cattle and buffaloes) across the 4 provinces of Pakistan. A total of 991 sheep, 1,478 goats, 1,602 cattle and 1,343 buffaloes were examined for presence of hydatid cysts during 2 years (January 2016-December 2018). Differences in frequency of hydatidosis were observed with highest overall prevalence in buffaloes (11.9%) and sheep (11.5%). Highest prevalence and burden of infection were obser

A young woman from an Echinococcus-endemic area with progressive abdominal distension: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. This case report shows the difficulty in differential diagnosis in a patient with highly suspected hydatid disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old Chinese woman presented with progressive abdominal distension. Imaging results revealed a large multicystic tumor with typical features of hydatid disease. There was no clear relationship between the cystic tumor and the liver, which led to the assumption of primary extrahepatic cystic echinococcosis. After albendazole therapy was initiated, a laparotomy

Autochthonous liver cystic hydatid: Past or actual French shepherd's disease?

Autochthonous hydatidosis in France and western Europa are uncommon since the beginning of the 21st century. We report here an authentic indigenous cystic echinococcosis case in a French shepherd. The risk of remerging pathology should not be neglected and measures to interrupt parasite transmission are still relevant.

Diagnostic performance of Echinococcus granulosus protoscolices antigens in the serodiagnosis of human cystic echinococcosis.

The development of suitable serological tests for the diagnosis of CE is still necessary. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ELISA in the diagnosis of human cystic echinococcosis (CE), using parasite protoscolices antigens. Liver hydatid cysts were isolated from sheep infected with hydatid cysts and the protoscolices were isolated from the hydatid cyst fluid. Protoscolices crude antigen was prepared by mechanical disruption, plus freeze-thawing and sonication methods. Thirty sera samples of confirmed hydatid cyst patients, 30 samples of healthy individuals, and 30 samples of people w

Transmission ways of Echinococcus granulosus in rare muscular locations of hydatid disease.

The most common modality of transmission of the Echinococcus granulosus is through the alimentary tract. Other ways of infestation are questionable. Airborne penetration of bronchial venules to reach the heart and the systemic circulation has been advocated, but never demonstrated. Direct subcutaneous contamination through an injured skin has also been considered. Moreover, the hypothesis that a contamination different from eggs ingestion is not possible, is justified by the reason that eggs transform into larvae in the gastro-intestinal environment. Therefore, it is accepted the possibility t

Primary multiple cerebral hydatid cysts in an immunocompetent, low-risk patient.

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic infection that occurs worldwide. Humans are infected through ingestion of parasite eggs in contaminated food, water or through direct contact with infected dogs, which are the definite host. Humans serve accidentally as intermediate host, and occurrences are common in children and young adults. Cystic echinococcosis is endemic in Mediterranean, South American, Middle Eastern, Central Asia, East Africa countries and Australia. The liver is the most frequently involved organ, followed by lungs. Hydatid cysts have been reported only in 2% of cases in the brain.

Four pathways for hydatid pulmonary embolism.

INTRODUCTION: Hydatid pulmonary embolism (HPE) is rare but remains an etiology that needs to be considered and kept in mind, especially in endemic areas, as regards nonthrombotic embolism. METHODS: Between 2000 and 2014, 10 patients were treated in our department for the presence of hydatid material in the pulmonary arterial circulation. Through these 10 cases, we try to assess the radioclinical characteristics and results of the surgical treatment. RESULTS: The study included six men and four women, average age 28 years. Discovery of HPE was made following the exploration of cardiorespirato

Surgical treatment of liver hydatid cyst before autologous stem cell transplantation; presentation of two cases with literature review.

Hydatid cyst, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is a parasitic disease which is frequently seen in endemic areas. The disease can be seen as an isolated entity or simultaneously with other diseases. Treatment of hydatid cyst in patients with malignancy as well as in patients in need of transplantation is still unclear. Although there is information in the form of case reports, a large number of patient data are needed to create a consensus on the management of these patients. We reviewed two cases with the need of autologuous stem cell transplantation which underwent liver hydatic cystectomy

Bayesian Analysis of Three Methods for Diagnosis of Cystic Echinococcosis in Sheep.

Diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis (CE) in sheep is essentially based on necropsy findings. Clinical symptoms can be easily overlooked, while the use of immunological tests is still not recommended for an intra vitam diagnosis. This study assessed the performances of three post-mortem laboratory methods in the diagnosis of ovine CE. In the absence of a single and accurate test as a gold standard, the results of multiple analytical tests can be combined to estimate diagnostic performance based on a Bayesian statistical approach. For this purpose, livers (n = 77), and lungs (n = 79) were sampled

In vitro and in vivo Effects of Artesunate on Echinococcus granulosus Protoscoleces and Metacestodes.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aim to investigate the efficiency of artesunate (AS) on Echinococcus granulosus protoscoleces and metacestodes. METHODS: For the in vitro assay, the eosin dye exclusion test and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were utilized to evaluate the effects of AS against protoscoleces (PSCs) from Echinococcus granulosus. In addition, mortality, ultrastructure change, reactive oxygen species (ROS) content and DNA damage were measured in order to explore the anti-echinococcosis mechanism of AS. For the in vivo assay, CE-infected mice were divided into model group, alb
