We describe a case of fatal overdosage with primidone and methsuximide. During the early phase of the patient's hospital course we found concentrations of methsuximide, N-desmethylmethsuximide, and primidone in serum that far exceeded the usual therapeutic concentrations, as determined by gas-liquid chromatography. BACKGROUND: We present the case of an 80-year-old woman who was admitted to hospital with an intermittent volvulus of the right colon. A total colectomy was performed. Initially, serum amylase and lipase increased concordantly, but after a few weeks amylase normalized (85 U/L), whereas lipase increased to 3764 U/L. The optimal conditions for isolation of naphazoline from naphthyzin preparations and biological fluids with chloroform at pH 9.18 are described. The compound of interest was identified with the use of color and precipitation reactions, IR and UV spectroscopy, thin-layer and gas chromatography, and chemical methods including high performance liquid chromatography, chromatodensitometry, and UV spectroscopy. The results obtained by the three methods are comparable.

Two new techniques have been devised for the prenatal diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies performed on fetal blood samples. Isoelectric focusing (IEF) of hemoglobins was compared to the classical chromatography of labelled globin chains for 51 fetal blood samples, 40 being obtained for prenatal diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies, in Paris. A highly effective acetochlor-degrading bacterial strain (D-12) was isolated from the soil of a pesticide factory. The strain was identified as Achromobacter sp. based on its 16S rRNA gene sequence.
