Two hundred forty-eight patients with primary epidermoid carcinoma of the oral cavity, oropharynx, and hypopharynx, stages II, III, and IV were entered into a prospective randomized clinical trial of preoperative irradiation therapy (700 rads X 2) and surgery versus surgery alone. 41 children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and 6 with postinfectious arthropathies, aged 3--15 years, were treated with acetylsalicylic acid for 14 days during which time the patients were hospitalized. Thirty-two patients (26 females, six males) with discoid lupus erythematosus of the oral mucosa have been studied. Patients with signs of dissemination were classified according to accepted criteria. Lithium was used to treat the manic symptoms of affective disorder in three patients with associated organic brain syndromes. In all three cases neuropsychological testing permitted evaluation of the degree of dysfunction during the acute and follow-up periods of treatment. Lithium was effective in controlling the manic symptoms of all three patients, and there was no evidence that it caused further organic deterioration.
