The risk of developing secondary cancers (SCs) among patients with malignant thymoma in the US has not been estimated in the more recent time period. Methods: We extracted demographic and treatment data from the SEER database to estimate the standardized incidence ratios (SIRs). Results: Of 1570 patients with thymoma 211 (13.4%) had SCs. The overall risk of developing SCs was higher among patients with thymoma (SIR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.34-1.76). The SIRs for cancers of lung, esophagus, sigmoid colon, soft tissue and heart, kidney, NHL and leukemia was significantly higher as compared to the genera

BACKGROUND: A gallstone ileus is a complication of cholelithiasis that is difficult to recognise. Morbidity and mortality are both high. Treatment often consists of surgical removal of the stone. There is limited literature available about less invasive therapies such as extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL).
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 72-year-old man with severe abdominal pain reported to the accident and emergency department. A blockage at the level of the sigmoid colon was visible on the CT scan, with concurrent diverticular stenosis. During a multidisciplinary consultation we decided upon

Brincidofovir (CMX001) is an oral agent with activity against double-strand DNA viruses undergoing clinical trials in immunocompromised patients. We report a patient clinically diagnosed with brincidofovir-related gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity and his histologic findings. A 2-year-old boy with medulloblastoma undergoing autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation developed adenovirus viremia 9 days posttransplant. After initial treatment with intravenous cidofovir he was started on oral brincidofovir as part of a clinical trial. He developed hematochezia, anorexia, and emesis 11 weeks later

Total robotic resection of mid- and low rectal cancers confers technical advantages within the confines of the pelvis and allows difficult rectal cancer cases to be performed efficiently with less risk of conversion to open. To maximize the advantage of robotic surgery, we utilize the technique of single docking totally robotic dissection for rectal cancer for both the Da Vinci Si and Xi Surgical Systems. All steps are performed robotically, with the surgery divided into two phases. The first phase consists of inferior mesenteric artery and vein ligation, sigmoid and descending colon mobilizat

INTRODUCTION: A sliding hernia is a rare type of inguinal hernia in which the hernia sac is partially formed by the wall of a viscus, such as the sigmoid colon, bladder, cecum, or appendix. Sliding hernias involving the bladder often present with obstructive urinary symptoms that could potential lead to serious complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, we present a 37-year-old male with a recurrent sliding hernia containing the dome of the bladder after prior laparoscopic repair of a direct inguinal hernia with mesh.
DISCUSSION: A TAPP approach is preferred over a TEP approach in the l

A 43-year-old man with a 23-year history of remission for Crohn's disease was admitted to our hospital because of stomachache and anal pain. Computed tomography showed fistula formation between the ileum and the sigmoid colon. Colonoscopy revealed two elevated tumors in the rectosigmoid and lower rectum. Synchronous double colitic cancer with Crohn's disease was diagnosed. We performed an abdominoperineal resection and an ileocecal resection. Histopathological examination revealed a rectosigmoid tumor invading the ileum and bladder with intestinal mesenteric and lateral lymph node metastasis,

A 70-year-old man was referred to our department due to abnormal shadows on a chest radiograph. Computed tomography of the chest revealed a 3-cm nodule in the right middle lung lobe, and bronchoscopy revealed adenocarcinoma cells with EGFR mutations. A lung resection was performed. Histological analysis revealed tumors comprising tall columnar cells that were similar to an adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon that had been resected 13 years previously. Metastatic colorectal carcinoma was initially considered, but immunohistochemical staining indicated pulmonary enteric adenocarcinoma. Pulmonary

To review cases of simultaneous radical cystectomy and colorectal cancer (CRC) resection for synchronous carcinoma of bladder and colorectum. Between May 1997 and September 2010, five patients were diagnosed with synchronous bladder cancer and CRCs. The primary colorectal tumors included three sigmoid cancers, one ascending colon cancer and one rectal cancer. All patients underwent simultaneous radical cystectomy and CRC resection. Pathologic types were confirmed by the biopsies of cystoscopy and colonoscopy. All patients were performed synchronous radical cystectomy and CRC resection. Four of

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is regarded as one of the risk factors for colorectal cancer, and early detection of cancer in these patients may be difficult, especially in pediatric patients. Prognosis of pediatric colorectal cancer is known to be poor, because of delayed diagnosis and unfavorable differentiation. We report a case of a pediatric patient with a 10-year history of ulcerative colitis who was diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer when he was 15 years old. He underwent proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis. Postoperative pathological examination of the tumor revealed a

A 70-year-old man presented with acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding. A colonoscopy performed one and a half months prior had revealed diverticulosis in the sigmoid colon; a small polyp located 10 cm from the anal margin had been removed at that time. The presenting patient was haemodynamically unstable and there was a significant amount of rectal blood loss. Gastroscopy revealed no abnormalities. During angiography, the patient died as a result of haemorrhagic shock. The post-mortem examination revealed a rectal perforation, which had most likely resulted from the polypectomy, and a seconda

Objective. Mesorectal excision corresponding to the location of a tumor, termed tumor-specific mesorectal excision (TSME), is commonly performed for resection of upper rectal cancer. We devised a new laparoscopic procedure for sufficient TSME with rectal transection followed by mesorectal excision. Operative Technique. After mobilization of the sigmoid colon and ligation of inferior mesenteric vessels, we dissected the mesorectum along the layer of the planned total mesorectal excision. The rectal wall was carefully separated from the mesorectum at the appropriate anal side from the tumor. Aft

Endometriosis is the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity and musculature. The estimated prevalence of endometriosis in Puerto Rico is 4.0%. The exact prevalence of extra-pelvic endometriosis is unknown. It has been reported that affects the intestinal tract in 3-37% of all patients with pelvic endometriosis, with the sigmoid colon and rectum being the most commonly involved areas. It can mimic colorectal cancer by producing an invasive abdominal mass. We present the case of a 40 y/o female patient with rectal bleeding that presented a mass on a colonoscopy high

We describe the extrusion of a ventriculo peritoneal shunt tube from the anus into a 6-year-old boy following the placement of a ventriculo peritoneal shunt for postoperative periventricular tumor-induced hydrocephalus. He was admitted with a complaint of extrusion of a tube through anus on and off during bowel evacuation. He was evaluated with an X-ray of the abdomen which was showing a coiled tube in descending and sigmoid colon, confirmed by sigmoidoscopy. The proximal end was exposed for external ventricular drainage and distal end was removed endoscopically. The patient was watched for pe

The anatomy of the mesocolon can be seen on multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scans, and its most important anatomic landmarks are the mesocolic vessels. The high spatial resolution of the current generation scanner coupled with the ability to generate high quality multiplanar images is very helpful in the delineation of the mesocolon. These vessels include the ileocolic and right colic vessels for the ascending mesocolon, the middle colic vessels for the transverse mesocolon, and the inferior mesenteric vein for the sigmoid and descending mesocolon. Knowledge of the anatomic landmarks

PURPOSE: An ideal feminizing genitoplasty in aphallia should achieve good cosmesis and capacious vagina in a single-stage repair. Most of the techniques described in the literature are variations of the posterior sagittal approach with staged repair. We describe a single-stage anterior sagittal approach for feminizing genitoplasty in cases of aphallia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case of aphallia was operated through an anterior sagittal approach, and a spiral Monti tube of sigmoid colon was used to create a neovagina. Preservation of the skin tag around the urethra and its placement in the peri

A 41-year-old female suffered from epigastralgia and intermittent constipation for 10 months, and abdominal fullness and intermittent pain for 6 months, before seeking help. Double contrast barium study of the colon showed multiple indentations on the sigmoid, ascending, and proximal transverse portions with tethered adjacent mucosal outline as well as the presence of ascites compatible with peritoneal carcinomatosis. Mediolateral oblique mammogram showed a speculated mass with some intratumoral microcalcifications in the upper retroareolar portion of the right breast. Due to the persistent ab

We herein report a case of long-term surviving patient who was treated with intravenous administration of activated autologous lymphocytes and low-dose chemotherapy. The patient was an 82-year-old female. She underwent radical resection for sigmoid colon cancer in 1998 and right lobectomy of the liver for metastatic liver tumor in 2001. A follow up CT revealed the metastasis to the bilateral lung on November 2003. Then she received a treatment with UFT plus low-dose CPT-11/CDDP and activated autologous lymphocytes. Although the response of the treatment was SD, the serum CEA level decreased to

A 64-year-old woman presented with severe abdominal pain and was found to have a large fecolith in the sigmoid colon with resulting bowel obstruction. During a therapeutic colonoscopy, she developed severe shortness of breath and hypoxia, and was found to have a tension pneumothorax. We review the potential mechanisms by which pneumothorax may occur following colonoscopy. In addition, the eight previously published cases are reviewed. Pneumothorax, with or without pneumomediastinum, can occur through a variety of mechanisms following colonoscopy. Although rarely reported, this may represent an

We report 2 cases with isolated intrathoracic lymph node involvement. This is an unusual manifestation of metastatic spread from an extrathoracic malignancy. Case 1 was a 47-year-old female with a history of radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer of the uterus. Left intrathoracic lymphadenopathy was detected during follow-up. These lesions were surgically removed and diagnosed as multiple lymph node metastases. Two years later, right intrathoracic lymphadenopathy was evident and excised again. Eight months after the re-thoracotomy, retroperitoneal recurrence appeared and she died of the dise
