The effect of low doses of gamma radiation on proliferation of Raji lymphoma cells and Chinese hamster fibroblasts in vitro has been investigated. It is shown that irradiation in the dose range between 2 and 20 cGy (maximum at 10 cGy) stimulates growth of cultured cells due to the shortening of the lag phase of cell growth, with the duration of the doubling time being unchanged. Preirradiation of growth medium in this dose range also stimulates cell proliferation, though to a lesser extent than irradiation of cells and the medium does. Cell cloning techniques and schizodeme analysis were used to detect mixtures of subpopulations in Leishmania parasites, isolated from humans and a reservoir host. Clones were obtained by plating promastigotes, at limited dilution, on solid medium. The resultant colonies were analysed by the restriction profile of kinetoplast DNA minicircles (schizodeme analysis). Fine needle aspiration (FNA) of bilaterally enlarged submandibular salivary glands yielded both Curschmann's spirals and actinomycetes filaments in the FNA smears. Histologic study of specimens from the bilateral submandibulectomy confirmed the actinomycosis but failed to demonstrate the presence of spirals. Twenty per cent of 60 patients with cirrhosis (55 alcoholic patients) had neutropenia (defined as neutrophil polymorphonuclear (NP) count under 2,000/mm3). The authors tried to define the mechanism of this neutropenia and compared it with the acute bone marrow cytotoxicity of alcohol. They found that bone marrow neutrophil colony growth was normal in 7 cases of cirrhosis compared to 7 controls (with and without cirrhotic serum incubation). The pathogenicity of the Dermatophilus-like microorganisms from porcine tonsil and the light and electron microscopic findings were studied with adult ewes. The early lesions were abscessess and advanced ones were granulomas after the subcutaneous inoculation. Several isolates of Moraxella bovis obtained from cattle with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis killed monocytes and macrophages in vitro and carried 3 to 5 plasmids. Cloned and noncloned M bovis isolates readily induced the disease, killed the phagocytes in vitro, and carried 3 plasmids. After a short period of tolerance, living cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were irreversibly damaged by low concentrations of sulfite. The length of the period of tolerance and the rate of the damaging effect depended on the concentration on sulfite, pH-value, temperature, the physiological state of the cells, and incubation time. Cell cultures of normal human embryonic lung fibroblasts were inoculated with two strains of Legionella pneumophila, the etiological agent of Legionnaires disease. Guinea pigs from a Guatemalan colony died after subcutaneous inoculating of moderately small doses of equine-benign strains of Venezuelan encephalitis (VE) virus of hemagglutination-inhibition subtype I-E from enzootic habitats in Mexico and Guatemala. Thus these guinea pigs were unlike English short hair and inbred 13 guinea pigs, which usually survive infections with equine-benign VE strains of subtype I-E. We therefore caution others that not all strains of guinea pigs can be used to evaluate the potential equine virulence of VE viruses.

Immunization of mice with a potassium thiocyanate extract of Pasteurella multocida type A (bovine strain) imparted complete protection against an experimental challenge infection with 1.6 x 10(3) colony-forming units of the homologous strain. Marrow cells from an untreated man with preleukaemia were found to have trisomy for the long arm of chromosome 1 which was translocated to the end of the long arm of number 11, i.e., 46,XY, -11,+t (1:11) (q11 or q12; q25). The same abnormality was found in metaphases from 8 individual granulocytic colonies. With development of acute myelomonocytic leukaemia, in addition to the basic chromosome abnormality, trisomy of chromosome 8 and an extra chromosome number 19 with partial deletion were found.
