Giant intraosseous (ectopic) meningioma of the temporoparietal calvarium with rapid expansion over 5 years: A case report.

RATIONALE: Intraosseous (ectopic) meningiomas are rare extradural tumors arising within the calvarial bone and account for <1% of all meningiomas. Because their imaging appearance may range from osteolytic to sclerotic or mixed patterns, they can mimic primary bone tumors or metastatic lesions and lead to diagnostic uncertainty. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 50-year-old woman presented with a gradually enlarging right temporoparietal scalp mass associated with mild headache for 5 years. The lesion caused marked cosmetic asymmetry without neurological deficit. DIAGNOSES: Serial cranial computed tomogra

Effect of different pacifier designs on orofacial tissues: a computational simulation comparative study.

OBJECTIVES: This study analyzes the effects of different pacifiers on the malocclusion formation, emphasizing the significance of pacifier design. Based on a computational model of pacifier sucking developed by the authors, the study provides insights dependent on pacifier geometry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computational model was developed, consisting of the palate, pacifier, and tongue, including six tissues: mucosa, cortical bone, cancellous bone, and alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and teeth. Three types of pacifiers were analyzed: orthodontic, standard, and conventional. The geometri…

Comparing bone and muscle parameters in community-dwelling older adults with obesity, with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is common in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and is associated with lower fracture risk. However, older adults with T2DM have higher fracture rates, suggesting distinct effects of T2DM on musculoskeletal health. We aimed to compare associations between components of T2DM and musculoskeletal health in community-dwelling older adults with obesity, with and without T2DM. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included adults aged ≥60 years with self-reported obesity (body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2). Physical function was assessed by short physical performance battery (SPPB), ha

Efficacy of Ceftobiprole and Daptomycin at Bone Concentrations Against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm: Results of a Dynamic In Vitro PK/PD Model.

Background: The presence of biofilms and low antimicrobial concentrations in bone tissue make prosthetic joint infections (PJI) difficult to treat. Ceftobiprole (CTO) has a potential role in MRSA PJI. This study evaluated the efficacy of ceftobiprole and daptomycin (DAP) alone and in combination against MRSA biofilms at expected bone tissue concentrations. We assessed whether CTO-DAP outperformed DAP combined with a non-anti-MRSA beta-lactam (cefazolin [CZO]). Methods: A dynamic in vitro PK/PD biofilm model (CDC biofilm reactor) was used to simulate concentrations expected in cortical bone at …

Low-Grade Fibro-Osseous Lesions With Isolated Chromosome 12 Chromothripsis: A Distinct Entity Or a Low-Grade Central Osteosarcoma With a Novel Driver?

Chromothripsis, a catastrophic genomic event causing extensive chromosomal fragmentation and rearrangement, has been identified in conventional osteosarcoma, contributing to karyotypic heterogeneity. Chromothripsis was also detected in a subset of parosteal osteosarcomas, primarily involving chromosome 12, but not well documented in low-grade central osteosarcoma (LGCOS). Here, we report 2 cases of low-grade fibro-osseous lesions with isolated chromosome 12 chromothripsis, aiming to characterize them by comparing their genomic and epigenetic profiles to those of other bone neoplasms. Case 1 wa

Femoral stem extraction devices.

INTRODUCTION: As the number of primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures continues to increase, so too does the demand for revision surgery, with a 43-70% rise in revision THA anticipated by 2030. Femoral stem extraction in revision THA is particularly challenging and may lead to complications like femoral bone loss or fractures. However, increasing catalogue of femoral stems available for primary and revision THA has led technological advances in extraction devices to potentially overcome these limitations. This review aims to discuss the identification of femoral implants and the vario

Early Intervention and Use of Autologous Grafts in Growing Skull Fractures Results in Better Outcomes: Experience From a Tertiary Pediatric Neurosurgery Center.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Growing skull fracture (GSF) is a rare complication of pediatric head trauma. Definitive treatment is surgical repair. We have attempted to assess whether use of autologous grafts for duraplasty and cranioplasty leads to better outcomes. We have also attempted to understand how timing of surgery might affect the degree of underlying damage to cortical tissue. METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective observational study based on review from the Great Ormond Street Hospital Neurosurgery prospective surgical database. All patients undergoing surgery for GSF repai

Micro-Osteoperforations Accelerate Tooth Movement without Exacerbating the Progression of Root Resorption in Rats.

A recent study reported that micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) accelerated tooth movement by activating alveolar bone remodeling. However, very little is known about the relationship between MOPs and external apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment. In this study, in order to investigate the mechanism through which MOPs accelerate tooth movement without exacerbating the progression of root resorption, we measured the volume of the resorbed root, and performed the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling (TUNEL) method on exposed MOPs during ex

Custom fabricated three-dimensional printed surgical guide for trephine bur in autogenous bone graft: A technique report.

This technique presents a workflow that designs the custom surgical guide to cover a trephine bur using simple slicer software and three-dimensional (3D) printing to perform the semilunar technique. This method in autogenous bone grafting surgery harvests a thin layer of cortical bone in the donor site with a trephine bur. Its biologically favorable, round shape can be used as a shell to reconstruct the ridge with a 3D contour acceptable for future implant placement. A 78-year-old female patient required vertical and horizontal bone grafting for future implant placement due to the infection ca…

Identification of Osteosarcopenia by High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography.

Osteosarcopenia is a prevalent geriatric disease with a significantly increased risk of adverse outcomes than osteoporosis or sarcopenia alone. Identification of older adults with osteosarcopenia using High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (HR-pQCT) could allow better clinical decision making. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of HR-pQCT to differentiate osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteosarcopenia in older adults, with a primary outcome to derive a model to distinguish older adults with osteosarcopenia from those with low bone mineral density only, and to exam

A very rare case of bone metaplasia of renal cyst: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Renal Osseous Metaplasia (OM) is a rare condition in which mature bone forms within the renal parenchyma, typically as focal cortical lesions. Although it is usually considered a spontaneous and less pathologically significant lesion, it has been observed in damaged renal allografts and other urinary tract sites. The case we present involves a native kidney with a simple renal cyst, where histopathological examination post-tumor enucleation revealed OM, emphasizing its noteworthy presence in clinical settings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old female with a history of cesarean de

Osteohistology of the hyperelongate hemispinous processes of Amargasaurus cazaui (Dinosauria: Sauropoda): Implications for soft tissue reconstruction and functional significance.

Dicraeosaurid sauropods are iconically characterized by the presence of elongate hemispinous processes in presacral vertebrae. These hemispi … proximal, mid and distal portions of both cervical and dorsal hemispinous processes reveal that the cortical bone is formed by highly vascularized fibrolamellar bone interrupted with cyclical growth marks. Obliquely oriented Sharpey's fibres are mostly located in the medial and lateral portions of the cortex. Secondary remodelling is evidenced by the presence o …

The Risk of Fractures in Primary Hyperparathyroidism: A Meta-Analysis.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common metabolic bone disease affecting 1% of the adult population. Patients with PHPT have reduced BMD, especially at the cortical bone. However, studies evaluating its impact on fracture risk have shown contradictory results. In an effort to further inform fracture risk for this patient population, a meta-analysis of studies of fracture in patients with PHPT compared with a control population was undertaken. Articles were searched in PubMed/MEDLINE, Excerpta Medica, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sci…

Denosumab reduces early migration in total knee replacement.

Background and purpose - Aseptic loosening is a main cause of late revision in total knee replacement (TKR). Migration of implants as measured by radiostereometric analysis (RSA) can predict future loosening. This migration is associated with bone resorption. Denosumab is a human monoclonal antibody that binds to receptors on osteoclast precursors and osteoclasts. This prevents osteoclast formation, resulting in less bone resorption in cortical and trabecular bone. We investigated whether denosumab can reduce migration of TKR, as measured with RSA. Patients and methods - In this 2-center, rand
