Evaluation of thyroid function tests of acne vulgaris patients treated with systemic isotretinoin.

BACKGROUND: Isotretinoin is a systemic retinoid used to treat acne and it binds receptors which are the member of steroid-thyroid hormone superfamily. Certain types of retinoids may cause abnormalities in serum thyroid function tests (sTFTs) by suppressing thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). However, it is uncertain whether systemic isotretinoin has any effect on sTFTs. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to find out if there is any alteration in sTFTs of patients with acne vulgaris treated with systemic isotretinoin. METHODS: A total of 51 patients (male/female: 22/29) with severe acne vulga

The role of PSMB9 upregulated by interferon signature in the pathophysiology of cutaneous lesions of dermatomyositis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Dermatomyositis (DM) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have common skin features, including dermal mucin deposition and interferon signature, although their roles are unknown. OBJECTIVES: To identify common or specific molecular changes in DM and SLE skin. METHODS: Proteomic analysis was performed using DM and healthy skin. Glycosaminoglycans were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS: The expression of 60 proteins was upregulated or downregulated in DM skin compared with healthy skin in the proteomic analysis. Among those proteins, PSMB9, an immunopro

Scar Management in the Pediatric and Adolescent Populations.

For most children and adolescents who have developed symptomatic scars, cosmetic concerns are only a portion of the motivation that drives them and their caregivers to obtain treatment. In addition to the potential for cosmetic disfigurement, scars may be associated with a number of physical comorbidities including hypertrichosis, dyshidrosis, tenderness/pain, pruritus, dysesthesias, and functional impairments such as contractures, all of which may be compounded by psychosocial factors. Although a plethora of options for treating scars exists, specific management guidelines for the pediatric a

Do tutorials on application method enhance adapalene-benzoyl peroxide combination gel tolerability in the treatment of acne?

Fixed-dose combination adapalene 0.1% and benzoyl peroxide 2.5% gel (A-BPO) has rarely been studied for Asian acne patients, while they have complained of local irritations more often when applying individual components. In this study, we compared A-BPO gel with benzoyl peroxide (BPO) in terms of efficacy and tolerability in Korean patients first, and assessed the clinical benefit of a dermatological tutorial on application technique in reducing irritations for A-BPO. This study was conducted as a single-blind controlled split-face trial for a 12-week period. Each half facial side of 85 patien

Results of a Phase III, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, non-inferiority study evaluating the safety and efficacy of isotretinoin-Lidose in patients with severe recalcitrant nodular acne.

BACKGROUND: Isotretinoin-Lidose, the first new formulation of isotretinoin in 30 years, differs from previously approved isotretinoin formulations in that it is less dependent on the presence of fat in the gut for absorption. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the safety profiles of isotretinoin-Lidose and food-dependent generic isotretinoin in the largest clinical study with isotretinoin-925 randomized patients from 49 study sites. Determine if the efficacy of this new formulation is noninferior to an existing isotretinoin. METHODS: Multicenter, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, noninferiority tri

[Vohwinkel syndrome. Hearing loss and keratoderma on the hands and feet].

The combination of sensorineural hearing loss and keratoderma on the hands and feet is rare. We report the case of a child that failed newborn hearing screening and also showed keratoderma on both hands and feet. The child's father exhibited the same constellation of symptoms, which is typical for mutilating keratoderma with deafness (Vohwinkel syndrome). This hereditary autosomal dominant disease is caused by mutation of the GJB2 gene that encodes the protein connexin 26. In our case it was highly likely that the GJB2 gene in the father carried a spontaneous mutation that was inherited by the

Isotretinoin use and the risk of inflammatory bowel disease: a population-based cohort study.

Limited evidence suggests that isotretinoin may be associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To explore this association, we conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study in British Columbia, Canada, among participants who were newly treated with isotretinoin or topical acne medications. The entire population of untreated provincial residents aged 12-29 years served as the reference group. During the 12-year study period, we identified 46,922 participants treated with isotretinoin, 184,824 treated with a topical acne medication, and 1,526,946 untreated individuals. Compared w

Multicentric reticulohistiocytosis with dermatomyositis-like features: a more common disease presentation than previously thought.

Multicentric reticulohistiocytosis (MRH) is a rare form of non-Langerhans histiocytosis that presents with erosive arthritis and skin nodules. Approximately 25% of patients with MRH have an associated malignancy. Dermatomyositis is an inflammatory autoimmune condition that has also been associated with malignancy. To date, 7 cases of MRH have been reported to present with cutaneous features of dermatomyositis. We describe an eighth patient with MRH who presented with dermatomyositis-like features (V-neck erythema, shawl sign, Gottron's papules and periungual erythema), who developed metastatic

Use of biologic agents in pediatric psoriasis.

Psoriasis affects approximately 2 percent of the population. Approximately 30-45 percent of those affected first experience symptoms during childhood or adolescence. Although biologics have proven to be a relatively safe and effective treatment option for adults with psoriasis, limited information is available regarding the use of biologic agents in pediatric patients with psoriasis. The authors attempt to assess and summarize the available data on the use of biologic agents in patients under the age of 18, regardless of the indication, as well as to examine the limited available data on the u
