Morphological and histochemical study of the nasal cavity and fused olfactory bulb of the brown-eared bulbul, Hysipetes amaurotis.

The brown-eared bulbul (Hysipetes amaurotis) is commonly found in Japan where it is regarded as a harmful bird that causes damage to agricultural products. Few studies have investigated the sensory apparatus of this bird, and consequently little is known of the sensory modalities it uses. Here we analyzed the anatomical and histological properties of the nasal cavity and olfactory bulb (OB) of the bulbul in order to investigate the functional level of olfaction in this species. Although both anterior and maxillary conchae were observed in the bulbul nasal cavity, there was no structure equival…

Histochemical and immunohistochemical characterization of exocrine cells in the foregut of the red-eared slider turtle, Trachemys scripta (Emydidae).

The morphofunctional organization of the exocrine cells in the foregut of the red-eared slider turtle, Trachemys scripta, was investigated by histochemistry (PAS, AB pH1.0 and pH 2.5, HID-AB, Bowie), lectin-histochemistry (WGA, SBA, UEA, ConA, PNA, DBA, sialidase-SBA, sialidase-PNA, Paradoxical ConA), and immunohistochemistry (antipepsin, anti-alpha-H+,K+ ATPase) to detect regional differences and verify the existence of an oro-aboral gradient in gastric juice secretion. Observations showed that pharyngeal goblet cells have mucins with terminal residuals of GalNAc and sialic acid. In the oesop…

Aberrant internal carotid artery in the middle ear with a deficiency in the origin of the anterior cerebral artery: a case report.

An aberrant internal carotid artery (ICA) in the middle ear is rare and difficult to diagnose, and may lead to severe complications. We present here a case of aberrant ICA with a deficiency in the origin of the anterior cerebral artery. The only symptom was aural fullness, and a nonpulsatile and white tympanic mass in the anteroinferior area was noted. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) are useful tools that provide excellent visualization of the temporal bone for the diagnosis of aberrant ICA by the following features: intratympanic mass, enlarged inferior tympa…

[Detection of specific antibodies to morbilliviruses, Toxoplasma, and Brucella species in eared seals in North-West of Pacific Ocean].

Presence of antibodies to morbilliviruses, Toxoplasma, and Brucella species in eared seals in North-West of Pacific Ocean was studied. Sera from 189 cubs of eared seals from different rookeries and regions. It has been shown that 10-22% of cubs living on Russian coast have antibodies to such dangerous diseases as morbillivirus infection, brucellosis, and toxoplasmosis. Antibodies to the two pathogens were detected in several animals, and brucellosis was more frequently detected associated infection. These results confirm hypothesis that all 3 pathogens are enzootic in eared seals population.

Temporal expression of the transforming growth factor-Beta pathway in the rabbit ear model of wound healing and scarring.

BACKGROUND: Despite numerous studies that have investigated the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying scar formation, this process still remains poorly understood. The importance of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) in these processes has been well recognized, and this study sought to define the temporal expression of the key members in this pathway in a well-established, clinically relevant, rabbit ear model of hypertrophic scarring. STUDY DESIGN: Seven-millimeter (hypertrophic) and 5-mm (nonhypertrophic) punch wounds were made on the ears of 12 rabbits. Wounds were harvested…

Opposing gradients of Gli repressor and activators mediate Shh signaling along the dorsoventral axis of the inner ear.

Organization of the vertebrate inner ear is mainly dependent on localized signals from surrounding tissues. Previous studies demonstrated that sonic hedgehog (Shh) secreted from the floor plate and notochord is required for specification of ventral (auditory) and dorsal (vestibular) inner ear structures, yet it was not clear how this signaling activity is propagated. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which Shh regulates inner ear development, we examined embryos with various combinations of mutant alleles for Shh, Gli2 and Gli3. Our study shows that Gli3 repressor (R) is required for pa…

Isolation of Malassezia pachydermatis and M. sympodialis from the external ear canal of cats with and without otitis externa.

The objective of this study was to determine the presence of Malassezia spp. in the external ear canal of cats with and without otitis. Forty-five animals were studied, 20 with and 25 without otitis externa (OE). Cerumen or secretion from external ear canal samples was cultured on modified Mycosel agar and sterile olive oil was added to the surface of the medium before specimen seeding. The isolates were analysed for macro- and micromorphology and identified by catalase tests and on the basis of growth on Tween 20, 40, 60 and 80. Malassezia spp. were isolated from 15 out of 20 (75%) animals wi…

They only see it when the sun shines in my ears: exploring perceptions of adolescent hearing aid users.

Hard-of-hearing (HOH) young people may encounter multiple challenges to their educational, social, and emotional development. The benefits of wearing hearing aids to enhance communication may be countered by negative stigma associated with hearing aids. This study explored the experience of 16 bilaterally, moderately to severely HOH adolescents in mainstream education to understand their perceptions of using hearing aids. A core category of "normality" emerged from the data, which captures the predominant issue for these young people. The sense of being normal may be situationally determined, …

Occurrence and population size of Malassezia spp. in the external ear canal of dogs and cats both healthy and with otitis.

Malassezia yeasts are commensal organisms of human and animal skin that occasionally act as pathogens; lipid-dependent species are associated with human skin disorders. The aim of this work was to evaluate the occurrence, risk factors and population size of different species of Malassezia in the external ear canal of dogs and cats with and without otitis externa. Between 2001 and 2003, 107 healthy animals (25 cats and 82 dogs) and 123 animals with chronic otitis exteirna (48 cats and 75 dogs) were clinically examined. Sterile cotton swabs were used to collect specimens from the external ear ca…

[Magnetic resonance findings in a case of Gradenigo syndrome: widespread inflammation involving the paranasal sinuses and middle ear].

Gradenigo syndrome is a rare condition consisting of otitis media, trigeminal neuralgia and abducens palsy. We report here a 6-year-old girl with this syndrome. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated inflammatory lesions in the left petrous apex and cavernous sinus, as well as stenosis of the left carotid artery. She was conservatively treated with antibiotics, which successfully improved her clinical and MRI findings. Surgical treatment including mastoidectomy was avoided. This case illustrates the usefulness of MRI in the diagnosis and management of Gradenigo syndrome.

The effects of ear-point stimulation on the contents of somatostatin and Amino acid neurotransmitters in brain of rat with experimental seizure.

The goal of this study was to elucidate the anti-convulsion mechanisms of ear-point stimulation in rat with experimental seizure. We prepared the epilepsy rats by intrahippocampal injection of penicillin. One hour later the lower 1/2 auricular lobules of seizure rats, containing ear-points Pizhixia and Shenmen etc., was electrically stimulated, which was imitated as ear-point electrical acupuncture in humans. Radioimmunoassay and biochemical techniques were used to determine the contents of somatostatin and amino acid neurotransmitters in hippocampus of rats. The outcomes revealed epileptiform…

Production of TNF-alpha by skin explants of dinitrochlorobenzene-challenged ears in rats: a model for the evaluation of contact hypersensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is a local inflammatory response of the skin following challenge of hapten-sensitized animals. It is the consequence of cell infiltration of derm and the release of inflammation mediators, among which Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is one of the most important factors. The intensity of the inflammation could be quantified by ear swelling which is the classical manifestation of the reaction. This study was testing the working hypothesis that levels of TNF-alpha in skin organ culture medium should correlate with the intensity of CHS reaction me…

Manipulation of the somatosensory cortex modulates stimulus-induced repetitive ear movements in a seizure-sensitive strain of gerbil.

Some Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) respond to stimulation by seizures, the pattern of which changes progressively during development. We previously established a seizure-sensitive strain, MGS/Idr, in which all animals exhibit such stimulus-induced seizures. We have now noted that all adults of this strain also show repetitive backward movements of the ears at the ears at the beginning of stimulus-induced seizures, although the incidence varies with the individual. We examined whether the cerebral cortex was involved in these movements and found that electrical stimulation of an are…

Predominant role of the chorda tympani nerve in the maintenance of the taste pores: the influence of gustatory denervation in ear surgery.

The effect on the taste pores of denervation of the chorda tympani nerve in the middle-ear cavity was studied comparing confocal laser microscopy with lingual nerve resection. Taste pore cells were stained for actin with rhodamine-phalloidin and positive fluorescence was observed as a ring shape at the transverse cross sections. Within three days after chorda tympani nerve resection the ring reaction disappeared, although the pore morphology remained intact as seen by scanning electron microscopy. On the other hand, lingual nerve resection did not induce such rapid disappearance of the ring re…
