A reliable and valid assessment of upper limb movement quality after stroke: the observational Drinking Task Assessment.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate the reliability and validity of a new observational Drinking Task Assessment (DTA) designed to assess quality of movement in task performance after stroke. DESIGN: Reliability and validity. METHODS: The DTA measures movement time and movement quality (smoothness, trunk, shoulder, elbow, and grasp movements) on a 4-level ordinal scale. Thirty participants with chronic stroke were assessed independently by 2 therapists. Intra-class correlation (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimal real difference (MRD), weighted kappa, percentage of agreement

Upper limb biomechanics and dynamics of a core skill on floor exercise in female gymnastics.

This study aimed to increase understanding of the biomechanics and dynamics of the upper limbs during the contact phase of the round-off (RO) performed using three techniques. Twenty female gymnasts performed six successful RO trials in each condition: parallel, T-shape and reverse. Kinetic and kinematic data were collected for each trial. All analyses focused on the contact phase for each hand. Continuous joint profiles examined the dynamics of these tasks as well as the kinetic sequencing. In each case, joint angles, angular velocity, moments and powers at the wrist and elbow joint were repo

Good outcome after an 8-year radial head resection on a Monteggia fracture in a young patient: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Monteggia fractures are proximal ulna fractures that involve radial caput displacement. Radial caput excision or resection is only suggested in situations of Monteggia lesions with radial caput fractures. Radial head resection should be avoided because the radial head is the principal stabilizer of the elbow and forearm. In this case report, we present a case of radial head resection at a young age after Monteggia reconstruction. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old female came to the orthopaedic clinic for removal implant control after eight years postoperatively, pa

Full-Body Kinematics and Vertical Ground Reaction Forces in Elite Ten-Pin Bowling: A Field Study.

The purpose was to investigate full-body kinematics and vertical ground reaction forces in the lower extremities of the delivery and to determine delivery changes over time after many deliveries in ten-pin bowling. Six male elite ten-pin bowlers completed six bouts of twelve bowling deliveries, all strike attempts, while measuring full-body kinematics and vertical ground reaction forces. Full-body joint angles, peak vertical ground reaction forces in the feet, vertical breaking impulse, centre of mass velocity, bowling score, and ball release velocity (BRvel) were measured. Results revealed th

Persistent Ulnar Nerve Palsy with Cubitus Valgus Deformity Following a Surgically Treated Flexion-type Supracondylar Humeral Fracture - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Supracondylar humeral fractures (SHFs) in children are mostly extension-type. SHFs have a high risk of cubitus varus deformity, while valgus deformity is rarely described. Nerve palsy can also occur during or after the injury, with most cases recovering spontaneously. Here, we present a rare case of cubitus valgus deformity after a flexion-type SHF with ulnar nerve (UN) palsy, which was successfully treated by corrective osteotomy and anterior transposition of the UN. CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old girl had left-sided cubitus valgus deformity with persistent UN palsy 4 months after

Percutaneous fixation of neonatal humeral physeal fracture: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal distal humeral physeal fractures are rare and difficult to diagnose. Thus, missed diagnoses and delayed healing are possible. Few studies have reported surgical treatment, because a callus may develop at the fracture site 5 d after the fracture, resulting in difficult reduction, and reduction of the limb may cause further physeal injury. Other surgical challenges include the provision of adequate anesthesia and complexity of the operation. However, without appropriate reduction and fixation, a varus elbow deformity may develop. Manual reduction and percutaneous pin fixatio

Short and long arm cast and pain after discharge in children who underwent reduction of distal forearm fracture in the Emergency Department: A study protocol for a randomized comparative effectiveness study.

Distal forearm fracture is the most common fracture in childhood. Patients with this type of injury suffer from meaningful pain after Emergency Department (ED) discharge. Previous studies demonstrated that short arm (below-the-elbow) casts perform as well as long arm (above-the-elbow) casts for maintaining the reduction of distal forearm fractures, with a similar rate of complications. Consequently, short casts are the commonly used method of immobilization after closed reduction of a distal forearm fractures in children older than 4 years. However, short casts carry a potential disadvantage;

Revision anterior capsular shoulder stabilization using hamstring tendon autograft and tibialis tendon allograft reinforcement: minimum two-year follow-up.

Surgical treatment of anterior shoulder capsular deficiency has been a challenge for orthopaedic surgeons dealing with failed anterior shoulder stabilization procedures. We have used hamstring tendon autograft or tibialis tendon allograft to reinforce deficient anterior capsular tissue in patients with failed anterior shoulder stabilization. We performed a clinical follow-up of 15 patients at a minimum of 2 years after surgery, using the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons questionnaire, a physical examination, and radiographs. Thirteen patients were satisfied with their surgery. The mean Ame

A simplified method for repair of distal biceps tendon ruptures.

Repair of distal biceps brachii tendon ruptures is recommended for active individuals desiring maximum return of elbow supination and flexion strength. A 2-incision method of repair has been most popular but carries a risk of radioulnar synostosis. In the past, repair through a single anterior incision required more dissection and risked injury to the posterior interosseous nerve. The authors present a simplified method for the repair of distal biceps tendon ruptures through a single anterior incision. The use of suture anchors provides secure fixation to the radius with minimal volar dissecti

Effective surgical treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome based on provocative clinical testing without electrodiagnostics.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of identifying surgically correctable ulnar nerve compression at the elbow based on provocative clinical testing alone in patients with cubital tunnel syndrome after failure of conservative treatment. Twenty-four patients were included in the study (mean age, 60 years). Three patients underwent bilateral procedures. Patients complaining of symptoms in the distribution of the ulnar nerve were tested by elicitation of Tinel's sign and combined flexion and pressure testing at the elbow and wrist. Two-point discrimination was determined. After a failed 6-week
