Emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms reported by parents of sexually abused, nonabused, and allegedly abused prepubescent females.

There have been few studies that have examined emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms that discriminate between well-defined groups of sexually abused and nonabused children. This study examined the results of a structured parent interview (SASA) completed on three matched samples of prepubescent females: 68 who were selected for nonabuse (NA Group), 68 from a sexual abuse clinic in which a perpetrator confessed (SA Group) and 68 seen at the same clinic who did not have a perpetrator confession (AA Group). Parents of girls in both the SA and AA groups reported increased sleep problems, f

Expressed emotion, family dynamics and symptom severity in a predictive model of social adjustment for schizophrenic young adults.

While numerous studies have concluded that high expressed emotion (EE) in relatives predicts relapse in schizophrenia, other aspects of patient outcome have not been well studied. Our purpose was to determine the extent to which family dynamics and expressed emotion may predict variance in patient social adjustment when controlling for symptom severity. Sixty-nine schizophrenic outpatients and 108 of their relatives participated. Relatives' EE was assessed, and they were administered the FACES III for perceptions of family cohesion and adaptability. Patients were interviewed at about the same

Does a twin pregnancy have a greater impact on physical and emotional well-being than a singleton pregnancy?

A prospective, population-based study was conducted to assess the impact of twin pregnancy on a woman's physical and emotional well-being. It compared women's reports of their general health, experience of a range of specific symptoms, and emotional well-being during pregnancy using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. The subjects were 147 women expecting twins and 11,061 women expecting a single child who completed questionnaires at both 20 and 32 weeks' gestation as part of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood. Results suggested that women expecting twins experienced

Can alopecia areata be triggered by emotional stress? An uncontrolled evaluation of 178 patients with extensive hair loss.

One hundred and seventy-eight patients with severe alopecia areata were asked at interview whether they attributed their first attack of hair loss to an emotional trauma. Twelve patients (6.7%) reported a severely disturbing event during the 6 months preceding the first symptoms of their disease. No patient reported that episodes of hair loss coincided with stressful life events. Emotional triggers were not especially correlated with any particular type of alopecia areata. The present study does not therefore provide evidence of a significant role of emotional stress in the pathogenesis of alo

Comparison of patients with and without emotional/behavioral deterioration during the first year after traumatic brain injury.

The records of 34 patients who showed evidence of emotional deterioration 6 months or more following traumatic brain injury were compared with a group of patients matched for severity of initial neuropsychiatric impairment who did not show deterioration. The deterioration group was more likely to have been involved in assaults and less likely to have been involved in a motor vehicle accident than the improvement group. The deterioration group was also more likely to have a prior history of alcohol abuse and to have sustained a skull fracture with left parietal lobe injury than the improvement

Serum free fatty acid level and body temperature changes in emotional stress in rabbits. Effect of hydroxydial.

Fourteen New Zealand rabbits were immobilized for 75 minutes During this time the ear (Te) and rectal (Tre) temperatures were measured at 5 min intervals. Immediately before immobilization, and then in the 35th, 55th, and 75th min of immobilization blood samples were taken for determinations of the serum free fatty acid (FFA) levels. A statistically significant fall of Tre and a significant rise in the serum FFA levels were observed at the end of immobilization. The ear temperature in these animals exceeded considerably the values as normal. Intravenous administration of hydroxydial 0.1 mg/kg

[Conditioning of emotional behavior caused by hypothalamic stimulation (4). Effects of drugs on conditioned avoidance and escape behavior].

In the present study, effects of psychotropic drugs were analyzed by observing avoidance and escape behavior or rabbits under hypothalamic electrical stimulation. In avoidance behavior, chlorpromazine (CPZ) and diazepam (DZP) depressed avoidance response and extended avoidance response latency and head movement latency. Autonomic behavior such as opening of palpebral fissure and pupil size were also delayed. The locus of movement and count of head movement were depressed by the administration of each drug. On the other hand, unlike CPZ, DZP extended escape response latency. On escape behavior,

Virtual Reality-Based Interventions for Treating Depression in the Context of COVID-19 Pandemic: Inducing the Proficit in Positive Emotions as a Key Concept of Recovery and a Path Back to Normality.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic as much as 40% of the global population reported deterioration in depressive mood, whereas 26% experienced increased need for emotional support. At the same time, the availability of on-site psychiatric care declined drastically because of the COVID-19 preventive social restriction measures.
