Numerous studies have indicated a role of epidermal growth factor in the maintenance of the gastrointestinal mucosa. In the present study epidermal growth factor concentrations in saliva and gastric juice of patients with gastric or duodenal ulcer or gastritis are compared with those of healthy controls. In this study we assessed the clinical utility of measuring all major rheumatoid factor (RF) isotypes (IgG, IgA, and IgM) in the diagnostic immunology laboratory using an enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). Bilateral sensorineural hearing loss of patients is correlated with elevated antibody titres against cytomegaly virus in serum in children as well as in adults. Unilateral deafness correlates with mumps infection. This is shown in a German population as well as in a Mediterranean group of patients. Individual human Ig class responses to Onchocerca volvulus antigens have been evaluated by Western blotting using sera from cases of generalized onchocerciasis and chronic hyper-reactive onchocerciasis (Sowda). in all cases except IgG3 the patterns of recognition by human antibody classes were similar in Sowda and generalized onchocerciasis. Weak or undetectable responses were seen with IgG1, IgG2 and IgM. The total profiles of antigens recognized by the other Ig classes were different, although in some cases certain bands were commonly identified. The result with IgG3, however, was striking.

Serological tests (ELISA) for cysticercosis were performed on groups of schoolchildren from two rural areas of Southern Africa, Ingwavuma in Northern KwaZulu and Isilimela in the Transkei. 22 of 736 Transkeian children were serologically positive while only 8 of 677 KwaZulu children were positive. These results, when corrected for the sensitivity and specificity of the test, indicate a cysticercosis prevalence of 2.49% in the Transkeian group and 0.23% in the KwaZulu group.
