Assessment of health risk and burden of disease associated with dietary exposure to pesticide residues through foodstuffs in Iran.

The health risk and burden of disease associated with dietary exposure to pesticide residues in foodstuffs in Iran were assessed. The pesticide residue levels in foodstuffs in the country were determined through systematic review and meta-analysis. The non-carcinogenic risk, carcinogenic risk, and attributable burden of disease were estimated in terms of hazard quotient (HQ), incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR), and disability-adjusted life year (DALY), respectively. The meta-analysis showed that 58% of pesticide-food pairs lacked Codex maximum residue levels (MRLs), 34% had pesticide leve

GPA Peptide-Induced Nur77 Localization at Mitochondria Inhibits Inflammation and Oxidative Stress through Activating Autophagy in the Intestine.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the colon, and its incidence is rising worldwide. Nur77, belongs to the NR4A subfamily of nuclear hormone receptors, plays a critical role in controlling the pathology of colitis. The aim of this study is to investigate the protection effect and mechanism of Gly-Pro-Ala (GPA) peptide, isolated from fish skin gelatin hydrolysate, in a mouse model of dextran sulfate sodium- (DSS-) induced colitis and intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) stimulated by lipopolysac

Renal lesions in cetaceans from Brazil.

This study reports the occurrence of renal lesions in cetaceans from the coast of Brazil subjected to necropsy examination between 1996 and 2011. The animals (n = 192) were by-caught in fishing nets, were found dead on beaches or died despite attempted rehabilitation. Kidney samples were evaluated grossly and microscopically and, depending on the histopathological findings, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analyses were conducted. Due to autolysis, a diagnosis was reached in only 128 animals, of which 82 (64.1%) had kidney lesions. Cystic renal disease was the most common lesion observe

First substantiation of clinico-molecular investigation of pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes in Nili-Ravi buffaloes.

BACKGROUND: Listeriosis is a zoonotic disease of humans, animals, birds, fish, and crustaceans worldwide. Domestic animals, especially ruminants, are more susceptible to listeriosis. This infectious disease is caused by Listeria monocytogenes, an intracellular bacterium that can cross blood-brain, placental and intestinal barriers. In Pakistan, the incidence and reliable diagnostic tools for the L. monocytogenes are unidentified in Nili-Ravi buffaloes. AIMS: This study was designed to inspect listeriosis in buffaloes through molecular techniques and haemato-biochemical analyses. METHODS: A t

ٍSome biologically active microorganisms have the potential to suppress mosquito larvae (Culex pipiens, Diptera: Culicidae).

Malaria is a disease caused by protozoan species of the genus Plasmodium. It is widespread and becoming a challenge in several African countries in the tropical and subtropical regions. In 2010, a report was published showing that over 1.2 million death cases were occurred globally due to malaria in just one year. The transmission of the disease from one person to another occurs via the bite of the Anopheles female. It is known that Plasmodium ovale, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. falciparum, and P. knowlesi are the highly infective malaria species. The problem of this disease is the absence of any

The Effects of Early Nutritional Interventions on the Development of Atopic Disease in Infants and Children: The Role of Maternal Dietary Restriction, Breastfeeding, Hydrolyzed Formulas, and Timing of Introduction of Allergenic Complementary Foods.

This clinical report updates and replaces a 2008 clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which addressed the roles of maternal and early infant diet on the prevention of atopic disease, including atopic dermatitis, asthma, and food allergy. As with the previous report, the available data still limit the ability to draw firm conclusions about various aspects of atopy prevention through early dietary interventions. Current evidence does not support a role for maternal dietary restrictions during pregnancy or lactation. Although there is evidence that exclusive breastfeeding for

Single choroideremia gene in nonmammalian vertebrates explains early embryonic lethality of the zebrafish model of choroideremia.

PURPOSE: Mutations of the CHM gene underlie the X-linked chorioretinal degeneration choroideremia (CHM). The affected gene product, Rab Escort Protein (REP)1, mediates the posttranslational prenyl modification of Rab GTPases. In patients with CHM, the related REP2 partially compensates for the loss of function of REP1. The objective of this investigation was to study the natural history of disease in a zebrafish model of CHM. METHODS: Zebrafish chm(-/-) were bred and subjected to extensive histologic analysis and TUNEL assays, and cellular extracts were used for immunoblot and in vitro prenyl

Clonal chromosomal abnormalities in the stem cell compartment of patients with acute myeloid leukemia in morphological complete remission.

Acute myeloid leukemia arises from the clonal expansion of a malignant transformed progenitor cell. Despite intensive chemotherapy, final disease eradication is achieved by a small proportion of cases only and 50-70% of adults with AML will ultimately relapse and die from their disease. Hence residual disease below the level of morphological detectability must be assumed in clinical and morphological complete remission. CD34+/CD38- and CD34+/CD38+ subpopulations of seven patients in morphological complete remission were isolated by FACS (purity >98%) and were analyzed by conventional cytogenet

Disorders related to the metabolism of phytanic acid.

The phytanic acid found in man stems from exogenous sources, mainly as minor parts of fish and animal fats. Free phytol, which is easily converted to phytanic acid in mammals, is present in fats of vegetable origin. Healthy individuals are able to degrade the small amounts of phytanic acid and phytol which are ingested. Accumulation of phytanic acid has been considered diagnostic for Refsum's disease, and a prerequisite for this diagnosis. However, a few patients with proven Refsum's disease have eliminated their phytanic acid stores by dietary means. Two healthy mothers of patients with Refsu

Molecular characterization of the unique Mesostephanus appendiculatus (Trematoda: Cyathocotylidae) by small ribosomal RNA from Egypt.

M esostephanus appendiculatus (Family: Cyathocotylidae) is one of the unique trematodes that complete their cycles in human and animal intestines in many countries of the world. The main source of its transmission is eating raw or undercooked infected fish muscle. Earliest analyses of genes to different parasites supported the analysis of helminthes either biological or morphological. This paper detected M. appendiculatus sequence with GenBank accession number gb (KY026782). Comparison of M. appendiculatus with other helminthes using BioEdit 7 and MEGA7 program shows some similarity in differe

An experimental approach to the immuno-modulatory basis of host-parasite local adaptation in tapeworm-infected sticklebacks.

The evolutionary arms race of hosts and parasites often results in adaptations, which may differ between populations. Investigation of such local adaptation becomes increasingly important to understand dynamics of host-parasite interactions and co-evolution. To this end we performed an infection experiment involving pairs of three-spined sticklebacks and their tapeworm parasite Schistocephalus solidus from three geographically separated origins (Germany, Spain and Iceland) in a fully-crossed design for sympatric and allopatric host/parasite combinations. We hypothesized that local adaptation o

Vitellogenesis in Archigetes sieboldi Leuckart, 1878 (Cestoda, Caryophyllidea, Caryophyllaeidae), an intestinal parasite of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.).

Vitellogenesis in the caryophyllidean tapeworm Archigetes sieboldi Leuckart, 1878, from carp Cyprinus carpio L. in Slovakia, has been examined using transmission electron microscopy and cytochemical staining with periodic acid-thiosemicarbazide-silver proteinate (PA-TSC-SP) for glycogen. Vitelline follicles extend in two lateral bands in the medullary parenchyma along both sides of the monozoic body. They are surrounded by an external basal lamina and contain vitellocytes and an interstitial tissue. The general pattern of vitellogenesis is essentially like that of other caryophyllideans. It in

In infectious pancreatic necrosis virus carrier Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., post-smolts, almost all kidney macrophages ex vivo contain a low level of non-replicating virus.

The level of infection by infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) of kidney macrophages from 12 asymptomatic carrier Atlantic salmon post-smolts was studied. Kidney leucocytes were fractionated on 34/51% Percoll gradients, allowed to adhere to plastic wells overnight, washed to remove non-adherent cells and cultured for up to 7 days with or without renewal of medium on day 3. On day 1, supernatants were harvested, macrophages were counted, lysed and IPNV in the supernatants and lysates was titred in chinook salmon embryo (CHSE-214) cells. The multiplicity of infection ranged between 1:2.2

Nitrite disrupts multiple physiological functions in aquatic animals.

Nitrite is a potential problem in aquatic environments. Freshwater fish actively take up nitrite across the gills, leading to high internal concentrations. Seawater fish are less susceptible but do take up nitrite across intestine and gills. Nitrite has multiple physiological effects. Its uptake is at the expense of chloride, leading to chloride depletion. Nitrite also activates efflux of potassium from skeletal muscle and erythrocytes, disturbing intracellular and extracellular K(+) levels. Nitrite transfer across the erythrocytic membrane leads to oxidation of haemoglobin to methaemoglobin (

Life Course Exposure to Cyanobacteria and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Survival.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) occur worldwide and can cause ingestion and inhalation exposure to microcystin and other potent toxins. This study develops life course exposure measures for cyanobacteria for application in population studies and then associates these measures with the survival of individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The exposure measures utilize an individual's residence history, date of disease onset, and satellite data from the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network. Residence duration for selected exposure windows referenced to disease onset date
