Representations of common event structure in medial temporal lobe and frontoparietal cortex support efficient inference.

Prior work has shown that the brain represents memories within a cognitive map that supports inference about connections between individual related events. Real-world adaptive behavior is also supported by recognizing common structure among numerous distinct contexts; for example, based on prior experience with restaurants, when visiting a new restaurant one can expect to first get a table, then order, eat, and finally pay the bill. We used a neurocomputational approach to examine how the brain extracts and uses abstract representations of common structure to support novel decisions. Participa

Altered brain cortical maturation is found in adolescents with a family history of alcoholism.

Substance-naïve offspring from high-density alcohol use disorder (AUD) families exhibit altered subcortical brain volumes structurally and altered executive-functioning and emotion-processing functionally, compared with their peers. However, there is a dearth of literature exploring alterations of cortical thickness (CTh) in this population. T1-weighted structural brain MRI was acquired in 75 substance-naïve male offspring of treatment-seeking early onset (<25 years) AUD patients with high familial loading of AUDs (≥2 affected relatives) (FHP) and 65 age-matched substance-naïve male controls w

Plasticity of left perisylvian white-matter tracts is associated with individual differences in math learning.

Plasticity of white matter tracts is thought to be essential for cognitive development and academic skill acquisition in children. However, a dearth of high-quality diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data measuring longitudinal changes with learning, as well as methodological difficulties in multi-time point tract identification have limited our ability to investigate plasticity of specific white matter tracts. Here, we examine learning-related changes of white matter tracts innervating inferior parietal, prefrontal and temporal regions following an intense 2-month math tutoring program. DTI data

Age-related behavioural and neurofunctional patterns of second language word learning: different ways of being successful.

This study aimed at investigating the neural basis of word learning as a function of age and word type. Ten young and ten elderly French-speaking participants were trained by means of a computerized Spanish word program. Both age groups reached a similar naming accuracy, but the elderly required significantly more time. Despite equivalent performance, distinct neural networks characterized the ceiling. While the young cohort showed subcortical activations, the elderly recruited the left inferior frontal gyrus, the left lingual gyrus and the precuneus. The learning trajectory of the elderly, th

Suppression of aversive memories associates with changes in early and late stages of neurocognitive processing.

Unwanted memories, such as emotionally negative, can be intentionally suppressed through voluntary control in humans. Memory suppression is thought to be mediated by the interplay of a chain of neurocognitive processes. However, empirical data in support of this notion is lacking. Using high-temporal resolution event-related potential (ERP) technique, we investigated the time course of ERPs associated with suppression of negative and neutral memories in a Think/No-Think paradigm in young, healthy participants. Results showed that participants had greater difficulty in suppressing emotionally n

Top-down and bottom-up processes in speech comprehension.

Speech comprehension includes both bottom-up and top-down processes, and imaging studies have isolated a frontal-temporal network of brain areas active during speech perception. However, the precise role of the various areas in this network during normal speech comprehension is not yet fully understood. In the present fMRI study, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of spoken sentences was varied in 144 steps, and speech intelligibility was measured independently in order to study in detail its effect on the activation of brain areas involved in speech perception. Relative to noise alone, intelligi

Is dementia reversible in patients with neurocysticercosis?

OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlates and outcome of dementia in patients with neurocysticercosis (NCC). METHODS: Ninety consecutive patients with untreated NCC underwent a cognitive assessment (Mini-mental State Examination, Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination, and IQCODE) and were classified as having or not having dementia according to DSM-IV criteria. Imaging and cerebrospinal fluid examination data were recorded. The cognitive measures were repeated six months after treatment with albendazole and steroids. RESULTS: At the initial evaluation 15.5% (n = 14) of the patients were

Decreased 5-HT2a receptor binding in patients with anorexia nervosa.

UNLABELLED: Indirect estimations of brain neurotransmitters in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and low weight have demonstrated a reduction in brain serotonin (5-HT) turnover in general and led to hypotheses about dysfunction in the 5-HT(2a) receptor system. It was our aim to investigate the central 5-HT(2a) receptor binding index using SPECT brain imaging. METHODS: The 5-HT(2a) receptors of low-weight patients with AN were studied by means of the highly specific radioiodinated 5-HT(2a) receptor antagonist 4-amino-N-[1-[3-(4-fluorophenoxy)propyl]-4-methyl-4-piperidinyl]-5-iodo-2-methoxybe

Subpial demyelination in the cerebral cortex of multiple sclerosis patients.

The extent and pattern of demyelination in the cerebral cortex was determined in 78 tissue blocks from the brains of 20 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and 28 tissue blocks from 7 patients without neurological disease. Tissue blocks from 4 predetermined areas (cingulate gyrus, frontal, parietal, and temporal lobe) were studied, irrespective of macroscopically evident MS plaques. All tissue blocks contained cerebral cortex and periventricular and/or subcortical white matter. One hundred and nine demyelinating lesions were detected in the cerebral cortex, of which 92 (84.4%) were purely intraco

Somatosensory evoked potentials. Diagnostic criteria and abnormalities in cerebral lesions.

In order to advance the practical application of measuring evoked cortical responses following electrical stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist (SEP) in clinical neurology, diagnostic criteria, consisting of the onset latency, peak latency and 2 indices of the first 3 negative components, and their left-and-right differences, were proposed and applied to 65 patients with cerebral lesions of various aetiologies. The criteria used were shown to be very useful in distinguishing between normal subjects and patients with cerebral lesions. The N1 and N2 components were related to the involvem

Endocranial integration and modularity in an adult human sample with known age and sex.

Cranial endocasts represent a key proxy for reconstructing brain morphology in human evolution. Despite major advances in virtual anthropology and geometric morphometrics, patterns of endocranial integration and modularity as well as their variation with sex and age remain poorly explored. In this study, we apply 3D geometric morphometrics and multivariate analyses, including a surface-based mapping of local integration, to a sample of 115 modern human endocasts to detect patterns of morphological integration and variations linked to sex and age. Five bilateral endocranial modules, correspondi

Multisensory interactions of face and vocal information during perception and memory in ventrolateral prefrontal cortex.

The ventral frontal lobe is a critical node in the circuit that underlies communication, a multisensory process where sensory features of faces and vocalizations come together. The neural basis of face and vocal integration is a topic of great importance since the integration of multiple sensory signals is essential for the decisions that govern our social interactions. Investigations have shown that the macaque ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC), a proposed homologue of the human inferior frontal gyrus, is involved in the processing, integration and remembering of audiovisual signals. Si…

Cerebral Granuloma Mimicking Malignant Neoplasm in Patient with Seizures 21 Years After Head Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Chronic posttraumatic cerebral granuloma is a rare, delayed complication of traumatic brain injury. Because of its late onset of symptoms and atypical appearance, the correct diagnosis of this rare lesion is difficult. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 49-year-old man presented with seizures, which occurred 21 years after open right forehead trauma. Imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which indicated a malignant neoplasm, revealed a mass lesion on the right frontal lobe, invading the dura and partial frontal bone. The patient underwent tot…

Progressive Grey Matter Volume Changes in Patients with Schizophrenia over 6 Weeks of Antipsychotic Treatment and Their Relationship to Clinical Improvement.

Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have identified widespread and progressive grey matter volume (GMV) reductions in schizophrenia, especially in the frontal lobe. In this study, we found a progressive GMV decrease in the rostral medial frontal cortex (rMFC, including the anterior cingulate cortex) in the patient group during a 6-week follow-up of 40 patients with schizophrenia and 31 healthy controls well-matched for age, gender, and education. The higher baseline GMV in the rMFC predicted better improvement in the positive score on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), and …

Microarchitecture and connectivity of the parietal lobe.

This chapter summarizes current knowledge on the structural segregation of the parietal lobe based on cyto-, myelo-, and receptorarchitectonic studies, as well as the connectivity of this brain region with other cortical and subcortical structures. The anterior part of the human parietal cortex comprises the somatosensory areas 3a, 3b, 1, and 2, whereas the posterior part contains seven multimodal areas in both the superior and inferior parietal lobules. Available cytoarchitectonic maps of the human intraparietal sulcus do not provide a complete picture yet. Myelo- and receptorarchitectonic an

Involvement of ordinary what and where auditory cortical areas during illusory perception.

The focus of the present study is on the relationships between illusory and non-illusory auditory perception analyzed at a biological level. To this aim, we investigate neural mechanisms underlying the Deutsch's illusion, a condition in which both sound identity ("what") and origin ("where") are deceptively perceived. We recorded magnetoencephalogram from healthy subjects in three conditions: (a) listening to the acoustic sequence eliciting the illusion (ILL), (b) listening to a monaural acoustic sequence mimicking the illusory percept (MON), and (c) listening to an acoustic sequence similar t

[Correlation between cognitive and motor functions in Parkinson's disease].

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have a number of cognitive impairments even in the early phase of the disease. Anti-dementia drugs such as cholinesterase inhibitors and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists are suggested to alleviate such impairments. This supports the simultaneous treatment of both cognitive and motor dysfunctions. Thus, the correlation between these two functions is attracting an increasing clinical interest. Previous studies show a correlation between executive/frontal dysfunction and motor symptoms. This correlation is suggested to be mediated by a dysfun
