Medico-mycological investigations began at Greifswald in Germany as early as 1842 when Wilhelm Baum (1799-1883) was appointed to the chair of surgery of the university. This is shown by some theses of the time, as well as by the discovery of the contagious nature of pityriasis versicolor by Carl Ferdinand Eichstedt (1816-92), who identified a fungus as the cause (1846), later named Microsporon furfur (C. Otto Heubner can be counted among the fathers of pediatry. Beginning as an autodidact, he became pediatrist by chance, holding the first university chair in Germany (1884) exclusively devoted to pediatry; he needed no Dr. med. habil. thesis. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the publication of Hans Horst Meyer's classic paper in which he proposed that the ability of a substance to produce narcosis or anesthesia is governed by its partition coefficient. In this article, Robert Lipnick describes the experiments carried out by Meyer and his colleagues which disproved the earlier theories that potency was determined by the presence of particular functional groups or their metabolites or by water or fat solubility, and which led to the formulation of the lipoid theory of narcosis.

Changes of the age-specific and age-standardized incidence of malignant neoplasms in the GDR between 1962 and 1980 are investigated. A series of cancer localisation has increased in which case improved diagnostics and increased risk are discussed as causes (cancer of colon and rectum, of the pancreas, the breast and the testicle). The epidemics of bronchial cancer has apparently reached its climax, the admission rates stagnate. Cancer of the stomach and recently also cancer of the gallbladder and the extrahepatic bile ducts decrease in their frequency.
