Collaborative Optimization Design of Self-Powered Sterilizer with Highly Efficient Synergistic Antibacterial Effect.

The development of self-powered sterilizers has garnered significant attention in the scientific and engineering fields. However, there remains an urgent need to improve their sterilization efficiency. In this study, we present a self-powered sterilizer with superior antibacterial capability by maximizing the utilization of breakdown discharge generated by a soft-contact freestanding rotary triboelectric nanogenerator (FR-TENG). To achieve this, a collaborative optimization strategy is proposed, encompassing the structural design of the FR-TENG, the implementation of double voltage rectificati

Antibacterial phototoxic effects of synthetic asymmetric and glycosylated curcuminoids in aqueous formulations: studies on curcumin and curcuminoids. LIV.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro phototoxic potential of synthetic asymmetric and glycosylated curcuminoids on planktonic model bacteria by counting the colony forming units. The Gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis and the Gram-negative Escherichia coli were exposed to aqueous solutions of the curcuminoids (⩽2.5 μM) in the presence or absence of selected pharmaceutical excipients (Pluronic F127, PEG 400 and HPγCD) in combination with a low irradiation dose (5 J/cm(2); λmax: 450 nm) of constant irradiance and time. All the asymmetric curcuminoids, but only one of the glycosyla

Non-LPS targets and actions of LPS binding protein (LBP).

LPS binding protein (LBP) was discovered about 20 years ago because of its ability to bind to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). We have sh … e of LBP. Lipopeptides corresponding to lipoproteins present in spirochetes, Mycobacterium spp. and Gram-negative bacteria as well as Mycoplasma spp. are also recognized by LBP. Together with the growing number of related proteins of the BPI-PLUNC family, LBP apparently as soluble mediator has the important ability to recognize a variety of bacterial pathogens before ce …

An update on the role of nitrofurans in the management of urinary tract infections.

There have been few recent reviews of the nitrofurans in the literature, and none include recently available data on the use of nitrofurazone (nitrofural) in the prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Nitrofurazone and nitrofurantoin are the only nitrofurans that have become established in clinical use in the 20th century. These 2 nitrofurans have remained clinically useful against a wide spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including many strains of common urinary tract pathogens. Today, the primary use of nitrofurantoin is as an oral antibacterial…

[Mechanisms of action of beta-lactam antibiotics and mechanisms of non-enzymatic resistance].

The mode of action of beta-lactam antibiotics, and the non-enzymatic resistance mechanisms to their activity, are intimately linked to the s … of the PBPs. Such mechanisms are often found in enterococci, pneumococcus, ans staphylococci. With Gram-negative bacteria such modifications of PBPs are only a rare basis for resistance. The presence of an outer membrane brings another factor into the activity of beta-lactam antibiotics, which is the facility with the antibiotics can diffuse through specialised protein …

Winter kill in intensively stocked channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus): Coinfection with Aeromonas veronii, Streptococcus parauberis and Shewanella putrefaciens.

Unusual persistent natural mortality occurred in a floating in-pond raceway system intensively stocked with channel and hybrid catfish beginning in early November 2016 up until March 2017. The temperature during the period of outbreak ranged from 7.2 to 23.7°C. Gross examination of freshly dead and moribund fish revealed pale gills, slight abdominal distension and swollen inflamed vents. Comprehensive necropsy of 20 fish demonstrated vast amounts of bloody ascitic fluid in the coelomic cavity, visceral congestion, splenomegaly and pale friable livers but macroscopically normal kidneys, suggest

Clinical and microbiological profiles of ear infections in Osogbo, Nigeria.

Despite the fact that discharging ears (DE) are one of the most common presentations to ear, nose and throat (ENT) clinics in the tropics, few reports have documented the aetiologic agents involved. The pathogenesis is therefore not fully understood and treatment remains controversial. We present in this report the microbiological characteristics of DE over a 3-year-period at the ENT clinic of Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Southwest Nigeria.

The atypical quorum sensing system of classical Brucella species.

Brucella species are notorious pathogens of animals and humans and cause significant morbidity and economic losses globally. These hardy bacteria have evolved to survive and replicate in host cells, particularly macrophages, and have developed a specialized quorum sensing system that is essential for navigating intracellular life. Moreover, successful infection of the host is dependent upon elements of the Brucella quorum sensing system. While quorum sensing is a thoroughly well-defined process in many Gram-negative bacteria, several unique features in the quorum sensing pathway have evolved t…

Case Report: The First Report on Moraxella canis Isolation From Corneal Ulcer in a Bulldog.

A 5-year-old castrated male bulldog was diagnosed with a corneal ulcer accompanied by edema and conjunctival hyperemia. Ophthalmic examination and microbiological analysis were performed, and the bacteria were found to be gram-negative and globular. The isolated clone was identified as Moraxella canis (MZ579539) via MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rDNA sequencing. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that the bacteria were sensitive to tetracycline and chloramphenicol, but resistant to levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. After a conjunctival flap was placed, tobramycin ophthalmic solution and 5% sodiu

The Vibrio cholerae type VI secretion system: toxins, regulators and consequences.

The type VI secretion system (T6SS) is a proteinaceous weapon used by many Gram-negative bacteria to deliver toxins into adjacent target cells. Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium responsible for the fatal water-borne cholera disease, uses the T6SS to evade phagocytic eukaryotes, cause intestinal inflammation, and compete against other bacteria with toxins that disrupt lipid membranes, cell walls and actin cytoskeletons. The control of T6SS genes varies among V. cholerae strains and typically includes inputs from external signals and cues, such as quorum sensing and chitin availability. In the foll…

Snakebite complicated with Vibrio vulnificus infection.

Snakebite may be complicated with bacteria infections, most of which are Gram-negative bacillus. Snakebite complicated with Vibrio vulnificus infection has not been reported previously. Vibrio vulnificus infection is characterized by a necrotizing wound infection similar to the local lesion of severe snakebite. In Vibrio infections, aggressive debridement with the administration of strong antibiotics as early as possible is the only effective treatment. We report a 79-y-o man who suffered from snakebite on the right palm with rapid progression of hemorrhagic bulla, necrotizing fasciitis, compa

Tigecycline in the Era of Antibiotic Resistance: A Current Review.

Tigecycline (TIG) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic of the tetracycline class that evades the resistance mechanisms common to first- and second-generation tetracyclines and is effective against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, as well as intracellular bacteria. TIG is indicated for the treatment of intra-abdominal, skin, and soft tissue infections in adults, as well as community-acquired bacterial pneumonia. The clinical performance of the TIG has been the subject of discussion since its introduction due to variable safety and efficacy outcomes. Concerns have arisen regarding its associa

Is Pseudomonas aeruginosa a possible aetiological agent of periodontitis in dogs?

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal diseases are the most frequently diagnosed problem in small animal veterinary medicine. Although their exact cause is not fully understood, bacteria play an important role in their development. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium. The living environment of this bacterium may be soil and water; however, it can also be found in humans and animals. Antibiotic treatment of periodontitis may be complicated by the carbapenem resistance of some P. aeruginosa strains, if these bacteria are found to be an aetiological agent. The a

Zinc Blockade of SOS Response Inhibits Horizontal Transfer of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Enteric Bacteria.

The SOS response is a conserved response to DNA damage that is found in Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. When DNA damage is sustained and severe, activation of error-prone DNA polymerases can induce a higher mutation rate than is normally observed, which is called the SOS mutator phenotype or hypermutation. We previously showed that zinc blocked the hypermutation response induced by quinolone antibiotics and mitomycin C in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. In this study, we demonstrate that zinc blocks the SOS-induced development of chloramphenicol resistance in Enterobacter

Evaluation of the Antibacterial and Antifungal Properties of Phragmanthera capitata (Sprengel) Balle (Loranthaceae), a Mistletoe Growing on Rubber Tree, Using the Dilution Techniques.

The alarming increase in multidrug resistance of pathogenic microorganisms to conventional drugs in recent years has prompted the search for new leads in alternative remedies in natural products. Hence, this study was aimed at evaluating the antimicrobial properties of Phragmanthera capitata, a parasitic mistletoe growing on rubber trees. The in vitro antimicrobial activities of the acetone, methanol, ethanol, and aqueous extracts were investigated using five gram-negative and five gram-positive bacteria and four fungi. A 96-well resazurin broth and agar dilution techniques were used for the d

The Biofilm Community-Rebels with a Cause.

Oral Biofilms are one of the most complex and diverse ecosystem developed by successive colonization of more than 600 bacterial taxa. Development starts with the attachment of early colonizers such as Actinomyces species and oral streptococci on the acquired pellicle and tooth enamel. These bacteria not only adhere to tooth surface but also interact with each other and lay foundation for attachment of bridging colonizer such as Fusobacterium nucleatum followed by late colonizers including the red complex species: Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia and Treponema denticola-the founde

What is the relevance of fosfomycin pharmacokinetics in the treatment of serious infections in critically ill patients? A systematic review.

As treatment options for critically ill patients with multidrug-resistant bacteria diminish, older antibiotics such as fosfomycin are being investigated for use as last-resort drugs. Fosfomycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with activity both against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The aim of this review was to examine the effectiveness of current fosfomycin dosing strategies in critically ill patients. These patients can be subject to pathophysiology that can impact antibiotic pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles and potentially the effectiveness of their treatment. As a hydrophilic drug …

A histological and ultrastructural comparison of the sulfur granule of the actinomycosis and actinobacillosis.

The sulfur granules of actinomycosis and actinobacillosis were studied histologically and ultrastructurally. The sulfur granule of actinomycosis was large, and oval or horsehoe-shaped. In it, there were a number of gram-positive, filamentous or short rod-like hyphae beneath clubs. Ultrastructurally, the center of the sulfur granule was composed of a cluster of hyphae, and the periphery was surrounded by clubs arranged radially. The clubs were made of electron-dense fine granules and had a degenerated hypha at the center. These granules varied in amount from small to large. As for the host reac
