Keeping things in the right distance: Emotion triggers and regulation strategies of physicians.

Mental health of healthcare workers has been in the spotlight since COVID-19 pandemic, but not enough research is focused on their coping or emotion regulation (ER) strategies. We conducted 15 semi-structured interviews with physicians coming from various specializations and workplace environments and analyzed them via template analysis. Negative emotion triggers were grouped into several bottom-up categories, while the hierarchical organization of ER strategies was informed by the process model of ER. Our findings reveal uncooperative patients as the most significant trigger of negative emoti

The Triangular Interaction Between Dietary Polyphenols, Gut Microbiota and Type 2 Diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a growing global health concern characterized by peripheral insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiome, specifically gut dysbiosis, defined as an imbalance in the gut microbial composition and function, is a critical modulator of the pathophysiology of T2D. Dietary polyphenols, a diverse group of bioactive compounds that are abundant in plant-based foods, have gained increasing attention for their potential to attenuate metabolic disorders through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory

Navigating Bone Health in Epilepsy-A Detailed Review of Anticonvulsant-induced Osteomalacia: Its Mechanisms and Therapeutic Strategies.

Anticonvulsants are the drugs given for managing epilepsy and some other types of neurological disorders; however, their long-term use is increasingly suspected of causing adverse skeletal outcomes, including osteomalacia. Osteomalacia is a condition marked by defective mineralization of bone, leading to bone softening, bone pain, muscle weakness, and predisposition to fractures. The disruption of vitamin D metabolism, impaired calcium absorption, and altered bone turnover are mechanisms attributed to several commonly used anticonvulsants, especially enzyme-inducing agents such as phenytoin, c

Do different factors affect anxiety in persons with dementia based on their cognitive status?

While various factors can trigger anxiety in persons with dementia, there is limited information on whether these factors vary based on cognitive status. Therefore, this study aimed to examine factors associated with anxiety in persons with dementia by their cognitive status. Using data from the Round 12 of the NHATS, 1040 older adults were categorized into those with possible or probable dementia. Sociodemographic characteristics, pain, sleep problems, self-rated health, dependency in activities of daily living, social isolation, perceived social cohesion, and depression were included. While

The investigation of diving accidents and fatalities.

Diving accidents result from a variety of causes including human error, inadequate health and fitness, environmental hazards and equipment problems. They usually involve a cascade of events resulting in the diver being injured or deceased. The accuracy and usefulness of a diving accident investigation relies on well-targeted interviews, good field investigation, evidence collection and preservation, and appropriate equipment assessment. In the event of a fatality, a thorough and targeted autopsy is indicated. Investigators should have the appropriate knowledge, training, skills and support sys

A Clinical Focus on Shared Decision Making in Clinical Practice When Providing Dysarthria and Dysphagia Services to Individuals With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

PURPOSE: Traditional health care decision-making models center on clinicians making decisions for patients/caregivers based on the best available research evidence. However, this diminishes patient/caregiver involvement in their care and hinders the ability to align care plans with patient values and preferences. Shared decision making is a potentially beneficial process to implement with individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to provide more holistic, patient-centered dysarthria and dysphagia treatment. Shared decision making promotes active involvement by patients/caregivers by

Pushing the boundaries of digital social contact: Experiences of people with disabilities and their social networks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people with intellectual disabilities living in care facilities could not receive visitors. Health authorities suggested the use of digital social contact as an alternative for in-person visits. We examined how people with intellectual disabilities living in care facilities experienced the use of digital social contact with their informal social network throughout 2020. Residents, their relatives, volunteer visitors, direct support staff, and care facility managers (N = 283) completed an online questionnaire, of whom 35 participated in an interview. Video cal

Circulating cell-specific extracellular vesicles as biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring of chronic liver diseases.

Chronic liver diseases represent a burgeoning health problem affecting billions of people worldwide. The insufficient performance of current minimally invasive tools is recognised as a significant barrier to the clinical management of these conditions. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as a rich source of circulating biomarkers closely linked to pathological processes in originating tissues. Here, we summarise the contribution of EVs to normal liver function and to chronic liver pathologies; and explore the use of circulating EV biomarkers, with a particular focus on techniques to isol
