The changes of children myocardium lipid composition were studied for the first time during surgical intervention under cold crystalloid cardioplegia. The surgical intervention was performed as a result of congenital heart disease--atrial septal defect. A controlled study was carried out to evaluate the effects of postoperative iron therapy on iron status in anemic children after cardiopulmonary bypass. The patients were 8 boys and 9 girls (mean age 6.5 years) who underwent elective closure of atrial septal defect, secundum type. On postoperative day 9, patients were randomly assigned to either iron supplementation with iron sulfate 5 mg/kg until day 56 or to a control group. BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is an important cause of heart failure. Variants in >50 genes have been reported to cause DCM, but causative variants have been found in less than half of familial cases. Variants causing DCM in Iceland have not been reported before.

BACKGROUND: [corrected] Postoperative acute renal failure is a major complication of cardiac surgery associated with poor prognosis. Our study was designed to identify risk factors for renal failure in patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease.

Heart transplantation uniquely offers infants with irreversible myopathies and complex congenital heart disease (CCHD) the potential for survival. Heart transplantation in the first year of life has an actuarial 1-year survival rate of 85%. Controlling for the variables that lead to perioperative death can improve 1-year survival rates to 95%. An 83-year-old man died of aspiration pneumonia 5 months after closure of atrial septal defect (ASD) with an Amplatzer atrial septal defect occluder (ASO). At autopsy, the device was scarcely covered by the endothelium. After percutaneous ASD closure, 6-month course of antiplatelet therapy and prophylaxis for endocarditis are recommended. However, the 6-month duration may not be sufficient for some patients. More data are required to clarify how long it takes for the ASO device to be endothelialized in the human body and to determine predictors of poor endothelialization.
