Experiments were performed on chloralose-anaesthetized cats, pretreated with guanethidine and with ligated adrenals and sectioned splanchnic nerves. The animals were paralysed and artificially ventilated. Jejunal motility was recorded by an intraluminal balloon, as volume changes at a constant pressure. Fifty-seven cases of apple peel jejunal atresia have been reported in the English literature. Patients with this anomaly have a high incidence of prematurity (70%), malrotation (54%), short gut syndrome (74%), multiple atresias (15%), complications (63%), and mortality (54%). The surgical results in 39 children operated on for biliary atresia at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital between January 1975 and January 1985 are reported. The mean age at operation was 12.8 weeks (range 6 weeks-6 months). In the first 4 years no patient had sustained bile drainage after operation. A series of 37 adults normally resident in Britain have been investigated for persistent bowel symptoms following acute enteritis. 26 had intestinal malabsorption, of whom 12 had been travelling in the Mediterranean area, whereas 10 developed their illness at home. Mild jejunal mucosal abnormalities were found in cases with and without malabsorption, and the intraepithelial lymphocyte count correlated more closely with the degree of malabsorption than did the histological grading. The author presents the results of a new surgical technique for the reconstruction of the gastrointestinal tract after gastrectomy. Fifty seven children with dermatitis herpetiformis, 18 from Finland and 39 from Hungary, were studied. Diagnostic criteria included the finding of granular IgA deposits in the skin of all patients. In eight cases of congenital dilatation of the bile duct encountered in our institution during the past 3 years, jejunal interposition hepaticoduodenostomy was performed following resection of the involved bile duct. This procedure has no serious technical difficulties but appears to have some advantages over conventional techniques. The postoperative course of the patients has been favorable for a mean period of 1 year and 5 months up to the present. A further follow-up study is necessary before definite conclusions can be drawn.

Subcellular biochemical features of a naturally occurring enteropathy in the dog resembling chronic tropical sprue in human beings were examined. Affected dogs had reduced xylose absorption and low concentrations of serum folate, RBC folate, and serum vitamin B12. Skeletal muscle biopsies, blood samples, and 24-hour urines, before and after magnesium infusions, were obtained from 12 patients who had undergone jejuno-ileal bypass surgery several years earlier, selected for probable magnesium deficiency on the basis of repeated hypomagnesemia. The patients retained significant amounts of the infused magnesium, and exhibited elevation of low skeletal muscle magnesium and potassium, with concomitant decreases of muscle sodium and chloride. These changes were accompanied by increased urinary calcium and sodium and decreased urinary phosphorus excretion.

A 27-year old female received about 1 kg of salt in about 600 ml of water as an emetic after a self-poisoning attempt. Vomiting did not occur and massive necrosis of gastric, duodenal, and jejunal mucosa resulted in a severe and prolonged illness which required 31 weeks of continuous hospital care and 31 laparotomies over a period of 16 months. This report deals with 38 patients suffering from hydatid disease of the liver. The most frequently performed operative procedures were hepatic resection (n = 16), filling the cavity with normal saline solution (n = 16), filling the cavity with normal saline solution (n = 8), and total cystectomy (n = 6).
