Between 1978 and 1983 a total of 33 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) involving the gastrointestinal tract were seen in our institution. Pathological classification was performed according to Kiel. Low grade NHL was diagnosed in 17, high grade NHL in 16 patients. The most frequent histological entity was lymphoplasmocytoid immunocytoma (11 patients). The most common sites of origin were the stomach (23 patients) and the ileocecal region (6 patients). Malignant lymphoma complicating coeliac disease has been characterised on morphological and immunocytochemical grounds as malignant histiocytosis of the intestine (MHI). Fresh tissue from four cases of MHI was studied by means of a panel of monoclonal antibodies; in three cases tumour DNA was studied for immunoglobulin and T-cell receptor (TCR) gene rearrangement. Monoclonal antibodies were used to label malignant lymphomas obtained from 57 patients. On the basis of morphologic criteria, 18 lymphomas were the B-cell type, 10 were the T-cell type, and 6 were histiocytic; for 23 the type could not be determined. After monoclonal antibody labeling, 18 lymphomas of B-cell lineage were confirmed, 16 of the T-cell type were demonstrated, 6 were true histiocytic, and 17 were the null cell (non-T, non-B) type. Many changes have taken place in the diagnosis and treatment of non-Hodgkin-lymphomas in childhood during the last years. From 1979 to 1982, the Working Group for Paediatric Haematology, Oncology and Immunology of the GDR treated 50 children with NHL according to the LSA2L2-protocol in a multicentric study. An adolescent female with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with diffuse proliferative lupus nephritis subsequently contracted Hodgkin's lymphoma, mixed cellularity type. Anterior mediastinal and retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy is rarely clinically evident in patients with metastatic carcinoma of the prostate. We report a case in which the nodal disease was suggestive of the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma. Immunohistochemical stain for prostate specific antigen was useful in assuring the diagnosis.

Between 1965 and 1982, 52 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were found to have central nervous system involvement of their disease. In a group of 241 patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma investigated retrospectively, CNS manifestations occurred in 8%, mainly as meningeosis lymphoblastomatosa. Lymphoblastic and immunoblastic NHL showed the highest risk of CNS infiltration (40.7% and 12.5% respectively). Of 526 consecutive patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, 21 had first-degree relatives with lymphoproliferative or hematopoietic malignancies. Twenty-nine such tumors occurred in the 21 kindreds. Hodgkin's disease accounted for one-third of this total, with various leukemias (11 cases), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (five cases), and multiple myeloma (three cases) comprising the remainder. These data suggest that genetically-determined immunoregulatory abnormalities may represent a shared pathway of oncogenesis in diverse lymphoproliferative and hematopoietic malignancies.

The radiosensitivity of four human B-lymphocytic lymphoma cell lines has been studied. For all lines the Do values were in the range 1.3 to 1.8 Gy. Pathologic rupture of the spleen was the signal event in the onset of diffuse histiocytic lymphoma in a young woman. The diagnosis of lymphoma was established only after one month of observation. In a review of clinical features of ten patients with pathologic rupture of the spleen due to lymphoma, spleen size was variable, and in four of ten patients a diagnosis of lymphoma had not been suspected previously. In addition to the patient described herein, only two of those previously described survived splenic rupture.
