Techniques, Indications, and Outcomes in Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Thalamotomy for Tremor.

Magnetic resonance (MR)-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) is the latest minimally invasive stereotactic procedure, and thalamotomy using this novel modality has demonstrated its effectiveness and safety, especially for patients with essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD). In Japan, the application of MRgFUS to treat ET and PD has recently been covered by health insurance. Technically, the transducer with 1024 elements emits ultrasound beams, which are then focused on the target with a phase control, resulting in optimal ablation by thermal coagulation. The technical advant

Bilateral Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Guided Focused Ultrasound Thalamotomy for Essential Tremor.

INTRODUCTION: Essential tremor is the most common movement disorder in adults. Bilateral symptoms are typical; however, bilateral thalamotomy for essential tremor is associated with a high probability of adverse events. We retrospectively investigated the efficacy and safety of staged bilateral ventral intermediate nucleus thalamotomy for refractory essential tremor using magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasound. METHODS: We enrolled 5 consecutive patients with refractory essential tremor between September 2016 and March 2020. Patients underwent a second operation at least 1 year

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance normal values in children for biventricular wall thickness and mass.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric patients are becoming increasingly referred for cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). Measurement of ventricular wall thickness is typically part of the assessment and can be of diagnostic importance, e.g. in arterial hypertension. However, normal values for left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) wall thickness in pediatric patients are lacking. The aim of this study was to establish pediatric centile charts for segmental LV and RV myocardial thickness in a retrospective multicenter CMR study. METHODS: CMR was performed in 161 healthy children and adolescent

Magnetic Resonance Imaging patterns in central nervous system lymphomas: A pictorial review.

Five distinctive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) patterns of Central Nervous System Lymphomas (CNSL) are introduced in this pictorial essay - in an attempt to differentiate lymphoma from other abnormalities with similar MRI appearance, - namely a. solitary supratentorial, b. multiple supratentorial, c. infratentorial, d. intravascular, and e. extraparencymal. Recognition of a specific imaging pattern on brain MR imaging, may facilitate the early diagnosis and prompt treatment initiation, thus improving prognosis of brain lymphoma.

Detection of acute ventilatory problems via magnetic induction in a newborn animal model.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic induction measurement (MIM) is a noninvasive method for the contactless registration of respiration in newborn piglets by using measurement coils positioned at the bottom of an incubator. Acute pulmonary problems may be determinants of poor neurological and psychomotor outcomes in preterm infants. The current study tested the detection of pulmonary ventilation disorders via MIM in 11 newborn piglets. METHODS: Six measurement coils determined changes in magnetic induction, depending on the ventilation of the lung, in comparison with flow resistance. Contactless registratio

Contribution of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in the analysis of fetal craniofacial malformations.

A wide range of craniofacial malformations can be diagnosed in utero using ultrasonography. However, even with highly experienced sonographers and diagnostic physicians and optimal conditions of examination, some anatomical structures cannot be properly analyzed by this technique. The aim of this pictorial essay is to show the additional value of fetal magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography in this setting and to illustrate the role of these modalities in facial clefts; craniosynostosis; ear, eye and nose abnormalities; otomandibular dysplasias; and facial cephaloceles.

Prenatal Diagnosis and Classification of Fetal Hypospadias: The Role and Value of Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal diagnosis and classification of hypospadias are difficult and of value for management during perinatal and neonatal periods. The conventional approach for prenatal diagnosis of hypospadias is ultrasound; however, this technique may be inconclusive in certain cases, which prompts for further exploration with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). PURPOSE: To investigate the role of MRI in the prenatal diagnosis and classification of fetuses with hypospadias. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Thirty-five fetuses (median gestational age = 37, range 24-39 weeks) with possib

Supraspinatus tears: predictability of magnetic resonance imaging findings based on clinical examination.

BACKGROUND: The shoulder physical examination is frequently performed to diagnose rotator cuff tears in clinical practice; however, there is insufficient evidence on which physical tests are efficient for shoulder impingements in primary care settings. The purposes of this study were (1) to analyze the accuracy of 8 clinical tests to diagnose supraspinatus tendon lesions and investigate whether the combination of these tests can improve the diagnostic values; (2) to assess which are the best positivity criteria for shoulder maneuvers-pain and/or weakness; and (3) to investigate the ability of

Successful removal of two magnets in the small intestine by laparoscopy and colonoscopy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of multiple magnets can cause serious gastrointestinal complications, such as obstruction, fistulae, and perforation. When multiple magnets traverse the stomach, coordination between pediatric gastroenterologists and pediatric surgeons is recommended, and ultimate management is required dependent on clinical concerns. CASE SUMMARY: A 5-year-old girl swallowed 2 small magnets that then remained in the right lower quadrant (RLQ) of the abdomen for 3 d; this required endoscopic and laparoscopic intervention. Abdominal X-ray and computed tomography revealed high-density obje

Magnetic resonance imaging compared to ultrasound as the preferred method for diagnosing intractable haematospermia.

We aimed to evaluate and compare the clinical diagnostic values of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound in patients with intractable haematospermia. We performed a retrospective review of 23 patients with intractable haematospermia who were diagnosed with seminal vesicle haematocele and/or calculi by transurethral seminal vesiculoscopy (TSV). Patients' demographics, disease durations, operative times, and MRI and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) results were recorded. McNemar's test was used to compare the positive diagnostic rates of MRI and TRUS. All patients had undergone preoperati

Assessment of intramyocardial hemorrhage with dark-blood T2*-weighted cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

BACKGROUND: Intramyocardial hemorrhage (IMH) within myocardial infarction (MI) is associated with major adverse cardiovascular events. Bright-blood T2*-based cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) has emerged as the reference standard for non-invasive IMH detection. Despite this, the dark-blood T2*-based CMR is becoming interchangeably used with bright-blood T2*-weighted CMR in both clinical and preclinical settings for IMH detection. To date however, the relative merits of dark-blood T2*-weighted with respect to bright-blood T2*-weighted CMR for IMH characterization has not been studied. We
