Maternal risk factors associated with neural tube defects in Tigray regional state of Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Unlike developing countries, including Ethiopia the identification of the risk factors in decreasing the burden of neural tube defects (NTDs) is well established in the developed world. Hence, we sought to determine the factors associated with NTDs in Tigray - Ethiopia. METHODS: We undergo a case-control analysis where all NTDs cases were compared to a group of controls derived randomly from the same hospitals where cases were recruited from. The NTDs survey tool which contains a standard questionnaire was prepared. Parental socio-demographic and clinical information such, mater

Maternal medical and behavioral risk factors for congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

PURPOSE: Maternal factors contributing to the etiology of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) remain unclear. We hypothesized that specific maternal medical conditions (pregestational diabetes, hypertension), and behaviors (alcohol, tobacco) would be associated with CDH. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-control study using Washington State birth certificates linked to hospital discharge records (1987-2009). We identified all infants with CDH (n=492). Controls were randomly selected among non-CDH infants. Maternal data were extracted from the birth record. Logistic regression wa

A Practical Testing Battery to Measure Neurobehavioral Ability among Children with FASD.

AIMS: To determine a brief, practical battery of tests that discriminate between children with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and unexposed controls. DESIGN: Children received dysmorphology exams, a targeted battery of cognitive and behavioral tests, and their mothers were interviewed about maternal risk factors. Children diagnosed with an FASD and children unexposed to alcohol prenatally were compared on cognitive/behavioral test results. SETTING: A community in The Western Cape Province of South Africa. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-one, first grade children with FASD and 52 matched norma

Species differences in developmental toxicity of epoxiconazole and its relevance to humans.

Epoxiconazole, a triazole-based fungicide, was tested in toxicokinetic, prenatal and pre-postnatal toxicity studies in guinea pigs, following oral (gavage) administration at several dose levels (high dose: 90 mg/kg body weight per day). Maternal toxicity was evidenced by slightly increased abortion rates and by histopathological changes in adrenal glands, suggesting maternal stress. No compound-related increase in the incidence of malformations or variations was observed in the prenatal study. In the pre-postnatal study, epoxiconazole did not adversely affect gestation length, parturition, or

Effects of exposure to nanoparticle-rich diesel exhaust on pregnancy in rats.

Pollutants from burning of diesel fuel are hazardous to human health. Nanoparticles in diesel exhaust potentially have profound impact on fetal development and maternal endocrine function during pregnancy due to their ability to penetrate deeply into the body. To investigate the effects of nanoparticle-rich diesel exhaust (NR-DE) on pregnancy, pregnant rats were exposed to NR-DE, filtered diesel exhaust (F-DE) or clean air for 19 days of gestation. Relative weights of maternal liver and spleen to body weight were significantly lower in the NR-DE and F-DE groups than those in the control group.

Maternal nutrition: effects on health in the next generation.

Nearly 20 years ago, it was discovered that low birthweight was associated with an increased risk of adult diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). This led to the hypothesis that exposure to undernutrition in early life increases an individual's vulnerability to these disorders, by 'programming' permanent metabolic changes. Implicit in the programming hypothesis is that improving the nutrition of girls and women could prevent common chronic diseases in future generations. Research in India has shown that low birthweight children have increased CVD risk factors, and a unique birth cohort in

Increasing prevalence of hypospadias associated with various perinatal risk factors in chinese newborns.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the increasing trends of hypospadias and identify some of the perinatal risk factors that might be involved in Chinese newborns. METHODS: The records from the neonatal intensive care unit were reviewed during a 10-year period. A case-control study was performed to compare the intrauterine growth status of the infants. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the independent contribution of maternal factors to the risk of hypospadias. RESULTS: Of 8364 male infants, 75 were diagnosed with hypospadias at birth. The overall incidence trend increased during the 10 y

Importance and prevention of malaria in pregnancy.

Malaria in pregnancy is one of the most important preventable causes of low birthweight deliveries worldwide. It is also a major cause of severe maternal anaemia contributing to maternal mortality. It is estimated that 40% of the world's pregnant women are exposed to malaria infection during pregnancy. The clinical features of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in pregnancy depend to a large extent on the immune status of the woman, which in turn is determined by her previous exposure to malaria. In pregnant women with little or no pre-existing immunity, such as women from non-endemic areas or trav

Post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation and hydrocephalus in preterm infants: a five-year retrospective cohort study from a tertiary referral center.

BACKGROUND: Post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) is a serious complication of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm infants and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Although neonatal risk factors are well described, the contribution of maternal and perinatal factors remains inconsistent across studies. OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence, clinical characteristics, and independent predictors of PHH among preterm neonates with IVH, and to evaluate early outcomes in a tertiary referral center. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included preterm neonates (< 34 wee

Factors associated with immediate postnatal care in Lao People's Democratic Republic: an analysis of the 2017 Lao People's Democratic Republic Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recognizes that approximately half of all maternal deaths occur in the immediate postnatal period or 24 h after birth. Forty-seven percent of Lao women aged 15-49 who delivered a baby in the last two years received a postnatal health check in the first two days after delivery. After leaving the presence of a provider, 98.5% of these women never received another postnatal check. The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in Lao PDR was 126 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2020. Immediate postnatal care (PNC) is a crucial step to improving maternal mortality. T

How the First 9 Months Shape the Rest of Your Life: The Impact of Gestational Diabetes on the Metabolic Future.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) represents far more than a transient glycaemic disorder: it is a sentinel metabolic event that unveils pre-existing defects in β-cell function and insulin action, with profound implications for both maternal and offspring cardiometabolic health across the lifespan. The physiological insulin resistance of pregnancy, driven by placental hormones and maternal immune modulation, intensifies progressively, resulting in a 60%-65% reduction in insulin sensitivity by the third trimester. This metabolic challenge necessitates a compensatory 200%-250% increase in insu

Maternal sleep deprivation and developmental programming of brain aging trajectories in offspring.

Maternal sleep deprivation (MSD) is a common but usually unnoticed issue during pregnancy, and in recent years, it has been increasingly recognised as an important prenatal stressor that may adversely influence maternal physiology, placental function, and fetal neurodevelopment. Sleep disturbances during pregnancy, including reduced sleep duration, fragmented sleep, poor sleep quality, circadian disruption, and rapid eye movement sleep restriction, have been associated with altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity, systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired circadian reg

Preexisting diabetes and gestational diabetes as risk factors for autism spectrum disorder: an umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Maternal diabetes during pregnancy, including preexisting type 1 diabetes (T1DM), type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), has been investigated as a potential risk factor for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in offspring. However, the consistency and strength of evidence across published meta-analyses remain uncertain. This umbrella review aimed to synthesize and critically appraise the existing meta-analytic evidence on this association. METHODS: Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we conducted an umbrella review of meta-analyses identified through PubMed

Caregiver burden experienced by mothers of infants who are HIV exposed uninfected compared to infants HIV unexposed: A prospective cohort study in Worcester, South Africa.

In low-income, high HIV prevalence settings, caregiving for a young child who is HIV exposed and uninfected (HEU) can place additional demands on a mother living with HIV while she manages her own health and the well-being of her child. We compared caregiver burden associated with infants' healthcare needs, perceived by mothers of infants who were HEU and HIV-unexposed, uninfected (HUU). This nested sub-study of a prospective cohort study was conducted within the public primary healthcare setting in Western Cape, South Africa. Eligible mothers were enrolled antenatally with known HIV status an

Psychosocial stress and associations with inflammation in mid-gestation maternal, fetal, and placental tissue.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation has been implicated as an intermediary between psychosocial stress and adverse birth outcomes. However, prior work has mostly relied on maternal inflammation as a proxy for fetal inflammation mid-gestation or measured fetal inflammation in cord blood and placenta obtained at delivery. No studies have examined psychosocial stress in relation to fetal inflammation mid-gestation. METHODS: Twenty cytokines were measured in matched maternal blood, cord blood, and placenta obtained mid-gestation from a socio-demographically diverse group of pregnant participants undergoing

Bromocriptine treatment and outcomes in peripartum cardiomyopathy: the EORP PPCM registry.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) remains a serious threat to maternal health around the world. While bromocriptine, in addition to standard treatment for heart failure, presents a promising pathophysiology-based disease-specific treatment option in PPCM, the evidence regarding its efficacy remains limited. This study aimed to determine whether bromocriptine treatment is associated with improved maternal outcomes in PPCM. METHODS: Peripartum cardiomyopathy patients from the EORP PPCM registry with available follow-up were included. The main exposure of this exploratory non
