Intrauterine exposure to maternal diabetes and the risk of developing epilepsy in children: a national cohort study of 2.3 million children.

BACKGROUND: Approximately half of the epilepsy cases lack a documented cause. Despite growing evidence linking maternal diabetes to pregnancy complications and impaired child neurodevelopment, little is known about its potential association with child epilepsy. This study aims to determine whether intrauterine exposure to maternal pre-existing type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), or gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the risk of epilepsy in children. METHODS: This study included live-born children without major malformations in Sweden from 1998 to 2021.

Maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms, parenting stress, and child psychological and cognitive outcomes among Syrian refugee mother-child dyads in Türkiye: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Refugee children exposed to war and forced displacement are at elevated risk for emotional, behavioral, and cognitive difficulties. However, child outcomes may be shaped not only by direct trauma exposure but also by the psychological functioning of caregivers and stress within the parent-child relationship. The present mixed-methods study examined whether parenting stress was associated with the relationship between maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms and child psychological and cognitive outcomes among Syrian refugee families living in Mardin, Türkiye. METHODS: Participants w

Adverse maternal outcomes among women who gave birth at public hospitals in eastern Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: An adverse maternal outcome, such as anemia, postpartum hemorrhage, and postpartum eclampsia, poses a significant risk to women. While studies on the burden of adverse maternal outcomes have been conducted in various countries, including Ethiopia, many predictors beyond obstetric factors have not been fully explored. This study aimed to determine the magnitude and factors associated with adverse maternal outcomes among women who gave birth at selected public hospitals in eastern Ethiopia. METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,608 randomly selected w

In vitro mRNA-S maternal vaccination induced altered immune regulation at the maternal-fetal interface.

BACKGROUND: Maternal-fetal immunology is intricate, and the effects of mRNA-S maternal vaccination on immune regulation at the maternal-fetal interface require further investigation. Our study endeavors to elucidate these immunological changes, enhancing our comprehension of maternal and fetal health outcomes. By analyzing immune profiles and cytokine responses, we aim to provide valuable insights into the impact of mRNA-S vaccination on the delicate balance of immune regulation during pregnancy, addressing critical questions in the field of reproductive pharmacology. OBJECTIVES: This investi

Socioeconomic disparities associated with symptomatic Zika virus infections in pregnancy and congenital microcephaly: A spatiotemporal analysis from Goiânia, Brazil (2016 to 2020).

The Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic, which was followed by an unprecedented outbreak of congenital microcephaly, emerged in Brazil unevenly, with apparent pockets of susceptibility. The present study aimed to detect high-risk areas for ZIKV infection and microcephaly in Goiania, a large city of 1.5 million inhabitants in Central-West Brazil. Using geocoded surveillance data from the Brazilian Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) and from the Public Health Event Registry (RESP-microcefalia), we analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution and socioeconomic indicators of laboratory confirme

Induced Abortion and the Increased Risk of Maternal Mortality.

UNLABELLED: After years of failure to obtain accurate statistics on maternal mortality, the United States noted a sharp increase in its maternal mortality rate with widening racial and ethnic disparities. The 2016 report shocked the nation by documenting a 26 percent increase in maternal mortality from 18.8/100,000 live births in 2000 to 23.8 in 2014. Suggested etiologies of this increase included artifact as a result of improved maternal death surveillance, incorrect use of ICD-10 codes, healthcare disparities, lack of family support and other social barriers, substance abuse and violence, de

Joint Associations of Maternal Smoking and Pre-Pregnancy BMI with Term Low Birthweight and Small-for-Gestational-Age Births: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of 2024 United States Birth Data.

Low birthweight (LBW; <2500 g) remains a persistent public health concern in the United States, with important implications for infant survival and long-term health. Maternal smoking and pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) are key determinants of fetal growth, yet their joint effects in term infants are not well characterized. Our analysis of the 2024 U.S. National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) birth data restricted to 2,973,679 singleton term births (37-41 weeks) reveals that 2.8% of infants were born LBW and 8.1% small-for-gestational-age (SGA). Smoking during pregnancy (2.2%) was asso

Maternal exposure to Aristolochic Acid I affects meiotic I progression by impairing DNA damage repair in fetal oocytes.

Aristolochic acid I (AAI), the predominant compound in Aristolochiaceae plants and Asarum species, is a widespread environmental contaminant capable of accumulating in soil, contaminating water and crops, ultimately entering the human body. Its nephrotoxic, carcinogenic, and reproductive toxic effects pose significant health concerns. This study investigates the impact of maternal AAI exposure on meiotic prophase I (MPI) during early fetal oogenesis. Pregnant mice were orally administered AAI at doses of 0.03125, 0.125, and 1 mg/kg from 14.5 to 16.5 dpc, with fetal ovaries collected at 17.5 dp
