Impact of a Mental Health Diagnosis on Emergency Department Adherence to Sepsis Care Guidelines.

Background: Previous work has found that clinical care for a variety of health conditions varies depending upon the mental health status of the patient. Sepsis, a condition with an algorithm-driven care plan, has not yet been investigated. This study sought to determine if disparities in care exist for people with mental illness and suspected sepsis. Methods: We conducted a retrospective medical records review of patients presenting to the emergency department with a clinical suspicion of sepsis from June 1, 2017, to January 31, 2018. Extracted data included clinical care decisions consistent

Assessment of self-rated health: The relative importance of physiological, mental, and socioeconomic factors.

BACKGROUND: The general self-rated health (SRH) question is the most common health measure employed in large population surveys. This study contributes to research on the concurrent validity of SRH using representative data with biomarkers from the Czech Republic, a population not previously used to assess the SRH measure. This work determines the relative contribution of biomedical and social characteristics to an individual's SRH assessment. Studies have already explored the associations between SRH and markers of physical health. However, according to a PubMed systematic literature search,

Housing Insecurity and Mental Health: the Effect of Housing Tenure and the Coexistence of Life Insecurities.

While the adverse effects of housing insecurity on mental health are known, much less is known about the modifiers underlying these effects. The aim of this study was to analyze the mental health of people with housing insecurity by housing tenure and considering the coexistence of other life insecurities (energy poverty and food insecurity). We conducted a cross-sectional study through a survey performed in all people attending the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages or the Alliance against Energy Poverty of Barcelona for the first time between June 2017 and December 2019 and who report

COVID-19 Pandemic: Mental Health in Girls With and Without Fragile X Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Children and adolescents, who have less developed coping skills, are affected by natural disasters and other traumatic events differently than adults. Emotional and behavioral effects are particularly pronounced during a pandemic-related disaster, when support networks that typically promote healthy coping, such as friends, teachers, and family members, may be less available. Children and adolescents with fragile X syndrome (FXS), who are at increased risk for developing anxiety and depression, may be particularly vulnerable to behavioral or emotional difficulties during a pandemic.

Research in eating disorders: the misunderstanding of supposing serious mental illnesses as a niche specialty.

PURPOSE: Eating disorders (EDs) are mental illnesses with severe consequences and high mortality rates. Notwithstanding, EDs are considered a niche specialty making it often difficult for researchers to publish in high-impact journals. Subsequently, research on EDs receives less funding than other fields of psychiatry potentially slowing treatment progress. This study aimed to compare research vitality between EDs and schizophrenia focusing on: number and type of publications; top-cited articles; geographical distribution of top-ten publishing countries; journal distribution of scientific prod

Is Illicit Substance Use Gender-Specific? The Basic Points of Mental and Health Disorders.

Among the groups of users of illicit substances, a high percentage are persons deprived of their liberty; at the same time, each social and age group is also affected, to one degree or another. The purpose of this study is to provide general data on the relationship between different psychostimulants, clinical and socio-demographic studies, and gender, both among the general population and in one of the most at-risk groups. This review identifies the use of illicit substances as gender-specific in the general population. A detailed study of the causal relationship between the use of illicit su

Mental State Language Development in Children With Down Syndrome Versus Typical Development.

This study compared mental state language (talk about emotions, thoughts, intentions, etc.) used by 6- to 11-year-old children with Down syndrome (DS) to a younger typically developing (TD) comparison group matched by nonverbal cognition. We aimed to determine (1) whether mental state language use is delayed in DS relative to developmental expectations, and (2) if there are differences between groups in the association between mental state language and developmental factors (emotion knowledge, expressive language). Rate of mental state language use was significantly lower in the group with DS,

Emergency Department Use for Mental Health Problems by Youth in Child Welfare Services.

OBJECTIVES: In Canada, little research has focused on emergency department (ED) use by youth involved with child welfare services, a vulnerable population. Our aims were therefore (1) to examine the characteristics of ED users among child welfare-involved youth, 2) to identify predictors of ED use and 3) to identify youth trajectories to EDs. METHODS: Data were collected from child welfare charts from two agencies in Montreal, Canada. Logistic regression was conducted to determine the predictors of ED use. Latent class analysis was used to identify trajectories to the ED. RESULTS: The sample

Perspectives Regarding Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Among Individuals with Mental Illness.

Most people with co-occurring opioid use disorder (OUD) and mental illness do not receive effective medications for treating OUD. To investigate perspectives of adults in a publicly-funded mental health system regarding medications for OUD (MOUD), we conducted semi-structured telephone interviews with 13 adults with OUD (current or previous diagnosis) receiving mental health treatment. Themes that emerged included: perceiving or using MOUDs as a substitute for opioids or a temporary solution to prevent withdrawal symptoms; negative perceptions about methadone/methadone clinics; and viewing MOU

Air Pollution, Foreign Direct Investment, and Mental Health: Evidence From China.

Recently, there has been interest in the relationship between mental health and air pollution; however, the results are inconsistent and the contribution of foreign direct investment (FDI) has received little attention. This article studies the effects of air pollution on mental health and the moderating role of FDI based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data in 2015 and 2018 applying the fixed effects panel regression approach and the threshold model. The results show that mental health is adversely affected by air pollution, especially PM2.5, PM10, sulfur dioxid

Nanosheet-type tin oxide gas sensor array for mental stress monitoring.

Mental stress management has become significantly important because excessive and sustained mental stress can damage human health. In recent years, various biomarkers associated with mental stress have been identified. One such biomarker is allyl mercaptan. A nanosheet-type tin oxide exhibited high gas selectivity for allyl mercaptan; thus, in this study, a sensor array comprising nanosheet-type tin oxide gas sensors was fabricated to detecting allyl mercaptan. Supervised learning algorithms were use to build gas classification models based on the principal component analysis of the sensor sig

Methylome-wide association study of early life stressors and adult mental health.

The environment and events that we are exposed to in utero, during birth and in early childhood influence our future physical and mental health. The underlying mechanisms that lead to these outcomes are unclear, but long-term changes in epigenetic marks, such as DNA methylation, could act as a mediating factor or biomarker. DNA methylation data were assayed at 713 522 CpG sites from 9537 participants of the Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study, a family-based cohort with extensive genetic, medical, family history and lifestyle information. Methylome-wide association studies of eig

Editorial: The Mental Health of Children and Adolescents Born Extremely Preterm Is a Real Challenge.

The long-term outcome of children born very preterm (VP) (before 32 weeks' gestation) or extremely preterm (EP) (before 28 weeks' gestation) has been the focus of extensive research, predominantly investigating general cognition, motor functioning, academic achievement, and behavioral problems. While there is considerable interindividual variability in terms of long-term outcome, there is strong evidence that children born VP/EP are at greater risk for cognitive and motor impairments, academic underachievement, and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and inattention than peers born at term.1,2.

Effects of molecular hydrogen intervention on the gut microbiome in methamphetamine abusers with mental disorder.

Methamphetamine (METH) is a potent and highly addictive psychostimulant and one of the most widely used illicit drugs, the abuse of which has become a severe public health problem worldwide. A growing amount of evidence has indicated potential connections between gut microbiota and mental disorders induced by METH and associations with neural and metabolic pathways. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between fecal microbial alterations and neuropsychiatric diseases in METH addictions. Thus, mental disorders and gut microbial alterations were analyzed by self-rating depression
