A female patient aged 28 fell ill with manifestations of sensory aphasia, headache and signs of cerebral compression. Except for a bilateral papilledema there were no further pathological clinical and paraclinical findings. Later on, amaurosis, deafness, anosmia and generalized muscular hypotonia developed. Physical, chemical, and mineralogical investigations of mineral concretions found in the human pineal gland were performed by means of optical microscopy and modern techniques of analytical electron microscopy and x-ray powder diffraction (OM,SEM + EDS,TEM + EDS,XRD). We report a case of sarcoma botryoides of the uterine cervix occurring in a 19-year-old woman. By light microscopy the tumor showed round and spindle cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and, focally, a cambium layer subjacent to the surface epithelium and surrounding endocervical glands. Disseminated histoplasmosis is one of the life-threatening opportunistic infections associated with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). A 29-year-old man with AIDS and disseminated histoplasmosis complained of a hazy spot in the vision of his left eye. Results of examination showed distinct creamy white intraretinal and subretinal infiltrates in both eyes. The patient died within a month from pulmonary infection with Histoplasma capsulatum and cytomegalovirus. To determine the occurrence of hereditary bullous epidermolyses (EB) in Croatia, Yugoslavia, from 1960 to 1987, cases were gathered from the hospital files of dermatologic and pediatric clinics and departments throughout the area. The diagnosis of EB type was made on the basis of clinical features, patients' histories, and light microscopy and electron microscopy findings. A suspension of 2% hydrocortisone, micronized in sterile water, was instilled through a perforation in the tympanic membrane into the round window (RW) niche of 9 healthy rats once a day for 5 consecutive days. Some cases of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) may be related to the prodromal phase of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Experimental Wernicke's encephalopathy, induced in rhesus monkeys with a diet lacking thiamine (vitamin B1), is characterized by cavitary necrosis of the striatum as well as a microvacuolar periventricular lesion of the brain stem such as occurs in man. With high resolution light microscopy and electron microscopy, the primary structural alteration in the brain stem lesion, and probably also in the striatum, appears to be that of widespread "blister" formation due to splitting of myelin at the intraperiod line.
