Cellular senescence is a central component of the aging process. This cellular response has been found to be induced by multiple forms of molecular damage and senescent cells increase in number with age in all tissues examined to date. We have examined the correlation with age of two key proteins involved in the senescence program, p16INK4a and HMGB2. These proteins are involved in cell cycle arrest and chromatin remodeling during senescence. Circulating levels of these markers increases with age and correlates with functional status. The levels of HMGB2 appear to be significantly correlated w

OBJECTIVE: Frailty, a clinical syndrome associated with loss of metabolic reserves, is prevalent among patients who present to vascular surgery clinics for evaluation. The Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) is a rapid assessment method shown to be highly specific for identifying frail patients. In this study, we sought to evaluate whether the preoperative CFS score could be used to predict loss of independence after major vascular procedures.
METHODS: We identified all patients living independently at home who were prospectively assessed using the CFS before undergoing an elective major vascular su

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Contemporary approaches to the treatment of cerebral palsy (CP) advocate a task-specific approach that emphasizes repetition and practice of specific tasks. Recent studies suggest that body-weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT) programs may be beneficial in clinical settings. The purposes of this case series were to explore the outcomes and feasibility of a home-based BWSTT program for three children with CP.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Three children with CP at Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) Levels III or IV participated in this case series. Examinatio

INTRODUCTION: As the primary treatment of patients with severe trauma continues to improve, increasing interest has been directed towards long-term survival and Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). In trauma patients, there are few studies describing long-term outcome using tools specifically directed at HRQoL.
HYPOTHESIS: HRQoL measured with EQ-5D is significantly reduced compared to the Danish norm score 15 years after severe injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients more than 18 years of age, admitted to a level 1 trauma center from March 1996 to September 1997 were prospectively inc

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that multimodal prehabilitation programs comprising interventions directed at physical activity, nutrition, and anxiety coping can improve functional recovery after colorectal cancer operations; however, such programs may be more clinically meaningful and cost-effective if targeted to specific subgroups. This study aimed to estimate the extent to which patients with poor baseline functional capacity improve their functional capacity.
METHODS: Data for 106 participants enrolled in a multimodal, prehabilitation program before colorectal operations were analyzed. Lo

AIMS: A major proportion of patients with diabetic foot syndrome are older than 65 years. Little is known about outcomes of these elderly patients.
METHODS: We analysed 245 treatment cases in an observational single-centre study for comorbidities and outcomes over a 6-month period.
RESULTS: In all, 122 patients had peripheral arterial disease which was significantly increasing with age (n = 245, df = 1, χ2 = 23.06, p ⩽ 0.0001). Increasing age correlated positively with decreasing rate of revascularisations (n = 122, df = 1, χ2 = 4.23, p = 0.039). In total, 23 (9.3%) patients died in the obse

BACKGROUND: Countries with advanced welfare systems are increasingly relying on the input of informal caregivers, and there are growing concerns for their mental and physical wellbeing. However, the evidence about the relationship between caregiving and mortality risk is less clear.
METHODS: A census-based record linkage study with mortality follow-up of 33 months: participants totalled 1 122 779 individuals including 183 842 caregivers, of whom 28.2% (51 927) were providing 50 or more hours caregiving per week.
RESULTS: Over 33 months of follow-up a total of 29 335 deaths occurred, 2443 of

BACKGROUND: a growing number of older patients undergo cardiac surgery. Some of these patients are at increased risk of post-operative functional decline, potentially leading to reduced quality of life and autonomy, and other negative health outcomes. First step in prevention is to identify patients at risk of functional decline. There are no current published tools available to predict functional decline following cardiac surgery.
OBJECTIVE: to validate the identification of seniors at risk-hospitalised patients (ISAR-HP), in older patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
