Higher CCR5 density on CD4 + T-cells in mothers and infants is associated with increased risk of in-utero HIV-1 transmission.

OBJECTIVE: CCR5-tropic viruses are preferentially transmitted during perinatal HIV-1 infection. CCR5 density on CD4 + T-cells likely impacts susceptibility to HIV-1 infection. DESIGN: Fifty-two mother-infant dyads were enrolled. All mothers were living with HIV-1, 27 of the infants acquired HIV-1 in utero and 25 infants remained uninfected. METHODS: CCR5 density, together with frequencies of CD4 + and CD8 + T-cells expressing immune activation (CCR5, ICOS and HLA-DR) and immune checkpoint (TIGIT and PD-1) markers, were measured in whole blood from the dyads close to delivery. RESULTS: Compa

Coverage and determinants of HIV testing and counseling services among mothers attending antenatal care in sub-Saharan African countries: a multilevel analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS is one of the top global public health threats that causes significant cases, deaths, and socioeconomic impact. Even though both HIV testing and counseling are identified as essential HIV interventions during pregnancy, large population-representative data shows that service coverage and determinants are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the coverage and determinants of HIV testing and counseling services among pregnant mothers attending antenatal care services in sub-Saharan African countries using different nationwide data. METHODS: This study was conducted

Prevalence of hepatitis B infection and its associated factors among pregnant mothers attending antenatal care at public hospitals at Hararghe, Eastern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B infection is one of the world's most serious public health problems, causing significant morbidity and mortality. More than 2 billion individuals around the world have been infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), and approximately 400 million people are chronically infected with the virus, with more than a million dying each year from hepatitis B virus-related liver disease. A newborn infant whose mother is positive for both HBsAg and HBeAg has a 90% chance of developing chronic infection by the age of 6. Its infectivity is a 100 times that of the human immunodeficie

Diabetes in Pregnancy for Mothers and Offspring: Reflection on 30 Years of Clinical and Translational Research: The 2022 Norbert Freinkel Award Lecture.

Hyperglycemia during pregnancy is a double-edged sword, affecting both mothers and their offspring and creating a vicious cycle that can affect multiple generations. Research in this field over the past 30 years has greatly improved our understanding of this disease and formed the basis of improved strategies to improve the health of mothers and their babies. Despite this progress, gestational and preexisting diabetes continue to have significant effects on both short- and long-term health of mothers and their offspring. In this article, I provide an overview of the work that my colleagues and

Evaluation of the relationship between neonatal serum asprosin levels and anthropometric measurements in newborns of mothers with and without gestational diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Asprosin is a newly identified adipokine that is expressed in the placenta. Its production is increased in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and it is a factor related to insulin resistance. This study aimed to determine whether neonatal serum asprosin levels are associated with anthropometric characteristics of newborns born to mothers with and without GDM. METHODS: This study included 51 newborns of mothers with GDM (insulin-treated or diet-treated) and 55 control newborns with their mothers. In newborns, anthropometric parameters were measured, and the concentrati

Parental Worry About COVID-19 in Preschool Children's Mothers During the Pandemic Waves: The Role of Maternal Negative Feelings and Parenting Styles.

This cross-sectional study explores the relationship between maternal feelings, maternal parenting styles, and mothers' worry about COVID-19's detrimental consequences on preschool children's health and well-being. The study is among the first to concentrate on this reference specific group, whose characteristics might be particularly vulnerable to COVID-19's adversities. One hundred and four mothers of at least one preschool-age child completed an online questionnaire battery, which included the Parental Feelings Inventory, the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ), and the par

Associations between evening shift work, irregular sleep timing, and gestational diabetes in the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-be (nuMoM2b).

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Shift work is a risk factor for cardiometabolic disease, possibly through effects on sleep-wake rhythms. We hypothesized that evening (afternoon and night combined) and irregular (irregular/on-call or rotating combined) shift work during pregnancy is associated with increased odds of preeclampsia, preterm birth, and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), mediated by irregular sleep timing. METHODS: The Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-be (nuMoM2b) is a prospective cohort study (n = 10 038) designed to investigate risk factors for adverse pregnancy ou

Cumulative Risk for Children's Behavior Problems and Child Abuse Potential among Mothers Receiving Substance Use Treatment: The Unique Role of Parenting Stress.

There is a high prevalence of children whose parents suffer with a substance use disorder (SUD), which is associated with negative outcomes for children such as behavior problems and parents' child abuse potential. To understand negative consequences for children, it is important to consider a cumulative risk model, examining the impact of multiple co-occurring risks, as well as examine unique singular risk factors, such as parenting stress, which may have a direct effect on outcomes as well as mediate an association between cumulative risk and outcomes. Data came from 99 mothers with SUD, eng

Acceptability and impact of group interpersonal therapy (IPT-G) on Kenyan adolescent mothers living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Task shifting is a well-tested implementation strategy within low- and middle-income countries that addresses the shortage of trained mental health personnel. Task shifting can increase access to care for patients with mental illnesses. In Kenya, community health workers (CHWs) are a combination of community health assistants and community health volunteers and have played a crucial role on this front. In our study, we seek to assess the acceptability and feasibility of Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT-G) delivered by CHWs among depressed postpartum adolescents (PPAs) living

Circular RNA HECTD1 knockdown inhibits transforming growth factor-beta/ small mothers against decapentaplegic (TGF-β/Smad) signaling to reduce hypertrophic scar fibrosis.

Scars are nearly impossible to avoid after a skin injury, but despite advancements in the treatment modalities, they remain a clinical problem, especially hypertrophic scars (HS). Many studies include the mechanism of formation and inhibition of HS, but it is not fully understood yet. Circular RNA HECTD1 (circHECTD1), for the first time, has been found to have roles in HS physiology. We determined the relative circHECTD1 levels in HS fibrous cells and tissues by RT-qPCR. Afterward, the effect of circHECTD1 knockdown on the proliferation, migration, invasion, fibrosis, and Transforming Growth F
