Comparison of Knee Extensor Mechanism, Function, and Flexion Range of Motion Between Obese and Nonobese Patients After Simultaneous Bilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Retrospective Follow-up Study.

Conflicting findings exist regarding the association between obesity and functionality after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We aimed to compare knee extensor mechanism function, knee function, and knee flexion range of motion between obese and nonobese patients who underwent simultaneous bilateral TKA. A total of 153 patients were divided into two groups as the obese (N = 99) and nonobese (N = 54) groups. The groups were compared for knee extensor mechanism function (chair-rise test), knee function (Hospital for Special Surgery [HSS] knee score), and knee flexion range of motion. The follow-up

Movement fluency metrics during multi-phase sit-to-walk and reach-to-grasp: Test-retest reliability and agreement between laboratory-based and portable 3D motion analysis systems.

BACKGROUND: International consensus recommends use of kinematic metrics of movement during standardized functional tasks after stroke to ascertain whether rehabilitation is driving behavioral restitution or compensation. Quality of human movement can be characterized by fluency metrics including smoothness and hesitation. Before using these metrics in stroke rehabilitation it is important to find whether 'reference values', from healthy adults, are repeatable. RESEARCH QUESTION: Do kinematic metrics of smoothness and hesitation have test-retest reliability during standardized functional tasks

Short-Term Effects of Wearing Commercially and Non-commercially Available Motion Control Footwear Versus Standard Shoes on Running Biomechanics in Adults: A Systematic Review with Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is controversy in the literature with regards to the short-term effects of wearing footwear with motion control features on running mechanics and whether commercially available footwear with motion control features has extra benefits compared with non-commercially available motion control footwear. In this systematic review with meta-analysis, we investigated the effects of wearing commercially available and non-commercially available footwear with motion control features versus standard shoes applied during one experimental session on lower limb joint angles and moments duri

Optimized hydrogel viscoelasticity and interlocking patch repair enhance compressive range of motion in injured discs and prevent re-herniation under physiological load in an Ex Vivo model.

PURPOSE: Evaluate how variations in hydrogels viscoelasticity for nucleus pulposus (NP) replacement affect biomechanical function and re-herniation resistance when combined with a mechanically competent annulus fibrosus (AF) repair technique in an intervertebral disc explant model. METHODS: Bovine caudal discs (n = 48) were divided into three repair groups (each n = 12) and one no-repair group (n = 12). Repair groups were treated with hyaluronic acid-tyramine hydrogel (HA-Tyr) of varying viscosities (low, medium, high), and AF was repaired using a mechanically interlocked patch (iPatch) made

Inter-fractional error and intra-fractional motion of prostate and dosimetry comparisons of patient position registrations with versus without fiducial markers during treatment with carbon-ion radiotherapy.

A few reports have discussed the influence of inter-fractional position error and intra-fractional motion on dose distribution, particularly regarding a spread-out Bragg peak. We investigated inter-fractional and intra-fractional prostate position error by monitoring fiducial marker positions. In 2020, data from 15 patients with prostate cancer who received carbon-ion beam radiotherapy (CIRT) with gold markers were investigated. We checked marker positions before and during irradiation to calculate the inter-fractional positioning and intra-fractional movement and evaluated the CIRT dose distr

Randomized crossover trial comparing cervical spine motion during tracheal intubation with a Macintosh laryngoscope versus a C-MAC D-blade videolaryngoscope in a simulated immobilized cervical spine.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining cervical immobilization is essential during tracheal intubation in patients with unstable cervical spines. When using the Macintosh laryngoscope for intubation in patients with cervical immobilization, substantial neck extension is required for visualization of the glottis. However, the C-MAC D-Blade videolaryngoscope may require less neck extension due to its acute angulation. We hypothesized that C-MAC D-Blade videolaryngoscopic intubation would result in less cervical spine movement than Macintosh laryngoscopic intubation. We compared the effects of C-MAC D-Blade vid

Automated artifact detection and removal for improved tensor estimation in motion-corrupted DTI data sets using the combination of local binary patterns and 2D partial least squares.

Signal variation in diffusion-weighted images (DWIs) is influenced both by thermal noise and by spatially and temporally varying artifacts, such as rigid-body motion and cardiac pulsation. Motion artifacts are particularly prevalent when scanning difficult patient populations, such as human infants. Although some motion during data acquisition can be corrected using image coregistration procedures, frequently individual DWIs are corrupted beyond repair by sudden, large amplitude motion either within or outside of the imaging plane. We propose a novel approach to identify and reject outlier ima

Association of binocular lower visual field impairment, impaired simultaneous perception, disordered visually guided motion and inaccurate saccades in children with cerebral visual dysfunction-a retrospective observational study.

The principal pathways serving higher visual function comprise the dorsal stream and the ventral stream. The dorsal stream runs between the occipital lobes and the parietal lobes and subserves the ability to process the whole visual scene and carry out visually guided movement. The ventral stream runs between the occipital lobes and temporal lobe tissue and primarily subserves visual recognition and memory. These tissues are susceptible to dysfunction in children with brain damage. We report a series of 40 children in whom damage to the brain has led to a common symptom complex affecting visio

Kinematic alignment yields a reduced knee adduction moment and better range of motion compared to mechanical alignment: biomechanical considerations of a staged, bilateral total knee arthroplasty case.

This technical note describes an intra-subject comparison between mechanical and kinematic alignment in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), based on gait analysis performed before and after staged bilateral procedures. Our quantitative assessment revealed differences in joint range of motion, moment profiles, and ground reaction forces between the two limbs. The kinematically aligned knee showed greater multi-planar mobility, higher sagittal moments, and a more physiological gait pattern. These findings highlight the added value of dynamic biomechanical analysis in evaluating the functional impact

Total ankle arthroplasty via lateral transfibular approach with and without concomitant subtalar arthrodesis : radiological alignment, patient-reported outcomes, and range of motion at ≥ five-year follow-up.

AIMS: Concomitant subtalar pathology may require arthrodesis at the time of total ankle arthoplasty (TAA), yet direct comparisons of isolated TAA versus TAA + subtalar joint arthrodesis (STJA) via a lateral transfibular approach, using the same implant, remain limited. We compared ≥ five-year radiological, functional, and range of motion (ROM) outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective single-centre cohort included 119 patients from January 2015 to December 2020 with ≥ five-year follow-up: 50 underwent TAA with concomitant subtalar arthrodesis and 69 underwent isolated TAA. Outcomes were Foot and

Minimizing radiation dose in coronary CT angiography using dual single-cardiac phase acquisition with a whole-heart motion correction technology: a prospective randomized study on image quality.

BACKGROUND: Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) plays an increasingly important role in coronary artery disease (CAD) evaluation, but radiation dose remains a clinical concern. Conventional multi-cardiac phase (CMP) scanning covers wide R-R intervals to ensure optimal image quality, leading to higher radiation exposure. Recent advances in motion correction technology, particularly whole-heart motion correction algorithms, offer potential solutions for dose reduction. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using dual single-cardiac phase (DSP) acquisition (end-systole: 45%
