Dysfunction in emotion processing underlies functional (psychogenic) dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether abnormalities in emotion processing underlie functional (psychogenic) dystonia, one of the most common functional movement disorders. METHODS: Motor and emotion circuits were examined in 12 participants with functional dystonia, 12 with primary organic dystonia, and 25 healthy controls using functional magnetic resonance imaging at 4T and a finger-tapping task (motor task), a basic emotion-recognition task (emotional faces task), and an intense-emotion stimuli task. RESULTS: There were no differences in motor task activation between groups. In the fa…

Post-Traumatic Tremor and Thalamic Deep Brain Stimulation: Evidence for Use of Diffusion Tensor Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a well-established treatment to reduce tremor, notably in Parkinson disease. DBS may also be effective in post-traumatic tremor, one of the most common movement disorders caused by head injury. However, the cohorts of patients often have multiple lesions that may impact the outcome depending on which fiber tracts are affected. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 20-year-old man presented after road traffic accident with severe closed head injury and polytrauma. Computed tomography scan showed left frontal and basal ganglia hemorrhagic contusions and intraventricula…

[Friedreich's ataxia: analysis of magnetic resonance imaging parameters and their correlates with cognitive and motor slowing].

INTRODUCTION: The heredodegenerative ataxias are a heterogeneous group of disorders affecting especially the cerebellum and its tracts. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies using quantitative methodology are scarce, particularly in Friedreich's ataxia (FA). On the other hand, slowness of information processing speed has been described in FA, but no empirical relation with MRI parameters has been established. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to quantitatively assess infra and supratentorial atrophy in patients with clinical diagnosis of FA and to establish the relationship with

First-night effect in the chronic fatigue syndrome.

Since the magnitude of the first-night effect has been shown to be a function of medical conditions and of settings in which polysomnographies are performed, it is essential to evaluate the habituation phenomenon in each case in order to determine the optimal recording methodology. A first-night effect was evidenced in certain cases of chronic fatigue syndrome, but not in others. To clarify this issue, a large group of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome who had no primary sleep disorders were selected and recorded for two consecutive nights in a hospital sleep unit. Several parameters, fre

[Neurophysiologic study of tremor].

Tremor is frequently encountered in neurologic practice. Clinical examination supplies information regarding its approximative frequency, regularity, amplitude, topography and activation conditions. The neurophysiological study helps in confirming the tremor, in differentiating it from other movement disorders like myoclonus, and may provide distinctive features which are important for the aetiological diagnosis. The neurophysiological investigation includes accelerometry, which analyses the mechanics of the movement. Spectral analysis with FFT allows the determination of frequency and amplitu…

Isolated sleep paralysis elicited by sleep interruption.

We elicited isolated sleep paralysis (ISP) from normal subjects by a nocturnal sleep interruption schedule. On four experimental nights, 16 subjects had their sleep interrupted for 60 minutes by forced awakening at the time when 40 minutes of nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep had elapsed from the termination of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in the first or third sleep cycle. This schedule produced a sleep onset REM period (SOREMP) after the interruption at a high rate of 71.9%. We succeeded in eliciting six episodes of ISP in the sleep interruptions performed (9.4%). All episodes of ISP exce

[Disruption of DNA replication in non-irradiated cells in basal cell nevus syndrome and the effect of ionizing radiation].

Analysis of DNA fiber autoradiograms from basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) skin fibroblasts has revealed for the first time a new defect in DNA replication earlier unknown in other chromosomal instability syndromes, that involves a significantly decreased rate of DNA-chain growth in unirradiated cells. Here we present evidence that the defect may be due to a marked reduction in number of simultaneously operating groups of replicons compared to that in normal cells, the rate of fork movement and the fusion of neighbouring units in the group remaining unchanged. Radioresistant DNA synthesis was

AI-Enabled Algorithm for Automatic Classification of Sleep Disorders Based on Single-Lead Electrocardiogram.

Healthy sleep is an essential physiological process for every individual to live a healthy life. Many sleep disorders both destroy the quality and decrease the duration of sleep. Thus, a convenient and accurate detection or classification method is important for screening and identifying sleep disorders. In this study, we proposed an AI-enabled algorithm for the automatic classification of sleep disorders based on a single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). An AI-enabled algorithm-named a sleep disorder network (SDN)-was designed for automatic classification of four major sleep disorders, namely in

Exploring physical activity patterns in adolescents with hypermobility spectrum disorder or hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Pain and fatigue are cardinal symptoms in adolescents with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) and Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). Adolescents with HSD/hEDS are assumed to be less physically active as compared to healthy peers, possibly contributing to poorer health, but objectively measured data are lacking. The primary study aim was to investigate physical activity patterns (daytime and nighttime movement behavior) using accelerometers in adolescents with HSD/hEDS versus a control group. The secondary aim was investigation of any association between fatigue and movem

Dissecting thrombus-directed chemotaxis and random movement in neutrophil near-thrombus motion in flow chambers.

BACKGROUND: Thromboinflammation is caused by mutual activation of platelets and neutrophils. The site of thromboinflammation is determined by chemoattracting agents release by endothelium, immune cells, and platelets. Impaired neutrophil chemotaxis contributes to the pathogenesis of Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS). In this hereditary disorder, neutrophils are known to have aberrant chemoattractant-induced F-actin properties. Here, we aim to determine whether neutrophil chemotaxis could be analyzed using our previously developed ex vivo assay of the neutrophils crawling among the growing throm

Deciphering Cognitive Impairments in Huntington's Disease: A Comparative Study of Stroop Test Variations.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by cognitive impairment, movement abnormalities, and behavioral disturbances. The Stroop Color Word Test (SCWT) is a widely used tool to detect cognitive decline in HD. Variations in SCWT formats-horizontal (original) and vertical (Golden)-may influence performance, given HD's impact on cognitive and oculomotor abilities. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the horizontal and Golden vertical SCWT formats in detecting cognitive decline in HD, and to determine how performance may have been influ
