The genus Madurella, described for non-sporulating agents of human mycetoma, is proven to be heterogeneous on the basis of rDNA small subunit (SSU) and Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequencing data. Madurella mycetomatis, the main agent of mycetoma in arid zones of Central and East Africa, probably belongs to the ascomycete order Sordariales. Madurella mycetomatis, the generic type species, is neotypified. Madurella grisea, with worldwide occurrence, is likely to be a member of the order Pleosporales, just as the mycetoma agents of Leptosphaeria, Pseudochaetosphaeronema, and Pyrenochaeta.

We report here a patient of orofacial conidiobolomycosis presenting with classical centrofacial distribution described typically for Conidiobolus coronatus infection. The culture, however, showed C. incongruus. The mode of infection and its possible correlation with patient's occupation is also discussed.

Tinea capitis as well as tinea corporis in adults may occur under conditions of immunosuppression. If suspected clinically, direct microscopy and examination by culture is indispensable. Therapeutic intervention should start without delay. A proven fungal infection of scalp hairs warrants immediate initiation of systemic treatment. Hereby prevention of disfiguring hair loss, permanent formation of scar tissue, spread of fungal organisms to other cutaneous regions as well as infection of other persons is possible.

The occurrence of community-acquired pneumonia due to yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida in patients without manifest immunodeficiency has previously been discounted. However, such pneumonias may indeed occur in patients with chronic parenchymal lung damage, e.g. from nicotine. Candida pneumonia can be triggered in these patients for example by trivial viral infections. Three corresponding cases are discussed.

We report a case of life-threatening nasal sinus zygomycosis that developed during remission induction therapy for a relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The allergenicity and antigenicity of various airborne fungi isolated from the atmosphere of Riyadh were studied.
