BACKGROUND: Neuroinflammation has been proven to play a crucial role in early brain injury pathogenesis and represents a target for treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). In this report we present the 9-year course of disease in a woman of Turkish origin suffering from Behçet's disease with parenchymal CNS involvement combined with myalgia. Differential diagnoses, such as drug-induced neuromyopathy were excluded on the basis of electromyographic and bioptic tests. We were able to arrest progression of symptoms of both the myopathy and the Neuro-Behçet's disease by means of increased combined immunosuppressive therapy.

Cancer-associated retinopathy (CAR) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome. In this survey we report about two further patients with CAR, who were referred to the University Eye Hospital of Tuebingen within a few months. BACKGROUND: Dengue infection is caused by a flavivirus, with 4 virus serotypes (types 1 to 4). The serotypes 2 and 3 represent the principal agents related to nervous system involvement. Neurologic involvement occurs in 4%-5% of dengue infection cases. The major mechanisms of the disease may be related to direct viral infection or postinfectious autoimmune process. The detection of intrathecal synthesis of specific antibodies has been used to support neurologic diagnosis as a proof of local reaction. It may be quantitatively calculated by the specific antibody index.

We describe retrospective data from the largest series of patients (n=142) with multiple sclerosis (MS) from Pakistan. Mean age at onset was 27 years, with a female to male ratio of 1.45:1. The disease onset was polysymptomatic in 75% patients. Motor weakness was the most common onset symptom (70%), followed by sensory symptoms (45%). OBJECTIVE: To describe the first patient with documented evidence of diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) in both eyes.
METHODS: A 10-year-old healthy Brazilian girl was first seen with signs of late-stage DUSN in both eyes. A careful search for a nematode was performed in each eye.
RESULTS: A motile 550- to 660-microm nematode was found in the inferotemporal retina of the left eye. A similar-sized motile nematode was found in the superotemporal retina of the right eye. Both nematodes were treated with argon green laser applications with bilateral improvement of visual function.

The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Portugal is still unknown. Recent studies conducted in southern European countries showed higher than expected rates of MS prevalence. PURPOSE: To assess the value of polymerase chain reaction in the diagnosis of cat-scratch disease neuroretinitis without conclusive serology.
METHODS: Interventional case report. A 13-year-old girl developed a right neuroretinitis 2 months after a cat scratch. Despite the lack of accompanying features, an infection by Bartonella henselae was suspected and a systemic check-up was performed.
