[Computer-assisted fabricated individual titanium mesh for reconstruction of orbital wall].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and assess the computer-assisted fabricated individual titanium mesh technique applied for reconstruction of fractured orbital walls to correct post-traumatic enophthalmus and diplopia. METHODS: Twenty patients (12 males and 8 females) were included in this study. All of patients suffered from unilateral impure orbital fractures. Group A included 8 patients who were reconstructed for the fractured orbit with computer-assisted fabricated titanium mesh technique. Group B had 12 patients treated with traditional methods (titanium meshes in 2, autog…

Quantitative analysis of the orbital floor defect after zygoma fracture repair.

PURPOSE: Moderate-energy zygoma fractures result frequently in a posteromedially displaced bone fragment. Closed reduction using a force vector directed in an anterolateral direction frequently produces stable repair of these injuries. Exploration of the orbital floor (OF) is not routinely undertaken. However, as the zygoma forms a significant portion of the OF, realignment may create an unrecognized OF defect. Routine OF exploration may be unnecessary and carries the risks of eyelid malposition, scarring, and extraocular muscle injury. Our goal was to quantitatively describe the effect of zyg…

Orbital drainage of different sizes of colloids in rabbits: a dynamic scintigraphic study.

PURPOSE: To investigate the drainage patterns of radiolabeled colloids of different sizes injected into the orbital cavity in an animal model. METHODS: Twenty-one orbits of 11 rabbits were included in the study. In group 1, human serum macroaggregates with particle sizes of 10 to 100 microm, labeled with 10 mL of 1480 MBq (40 mCi) technetium pertechnetate Tc 99m (99mTc), were used. In group 2, human serum albumin colloidal particles with particle sizes of 50 to 80 nm, labeled with 5 mL of 740 MBq (20 mCi) 99mTc, were used. In group 3, colloidal tin with particle sizes of 300 to 600 nm, labele…

Patient with congenital optic nerve meningocele presenting with left orbital cyst.

INTRODUCTION: Meningocele of the optic nerve is a rare condition defined as dilatation of the optic nerve by spinal fluid not due to other pathology, classically presenting with headaches or progressive visual decline and usually follows a rapidly progressive course. DISCUSSION: Surgical decompression is the standard treatment with improvement or arrest of progression in most cases. We describe a case of a child with multiple congenital anomalies including a left optic nerve meningocele that progressively expanded and caused displacement of the orbit laterally resulting in severe cosmetic def…

Transconjunctival orbital emphysema caused by compressed air injury: a case report.

Orbital emphysema following conjunctival tear in the absence of orbital wall fracture, caused by air under pressure is rare. Usually orbital emphysema is seen in facial trauma associated with damage to the adjacent paranasal sinuses or facial bones. To the best of our knowledge, there have been only eight reports of orbital emphysema following use of compressed air during industrial work. The air under pressure is pushed through the subconjunctival space into the subcutaneous and retrobulbar spaces. We present here a rare cause of orbital emphysema in a young man working with compressed air gu…

Silent sinus syndrome presenting as enophthalmos long after orbital trauma.

Late enophthalmos is a well-known consequence of large orbital floor fractures. In rare cases, late enophthalmos can occur after direct trauma to the maxillary ostiomeatal complex and present as silent sinus syndrome (SSS). We report two cases of SSS manifesting as enophthalmos years after facial trauma. The first patient developed SSS 4 years after a minimally displaced orbital floor fracture. The second patient had progressive enophthalmos as a result of atelectasis of the maxillary sinus years after facial trauma and surgical repair of nasal fractures. There have been two prior reports of S…

[Orbital locations in Rosai-Dorfman disease: a series of three consecutive cases].

INTRODUCTION: Rosai-Dorfman disease (or sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy) is a rare, benign entity, characterized by a histiocytic proliferative disorder that affects mainly the lymph node sinuses but also the lymphatics in extranodal manifestations. It affects mainly young men. The clinical syndrome consists of adenopathies, notably cervical, with fever and extranodal manifestations. Ophthalmological involvement is not frequent (10%), concerning above all the orbits, eyelids, and lacrimal glands, but cornea or uveal tissue can also be affected. Definitive diagnosis is anatomop…

Acute suppurative otitis media: an unusual cause of orbital apex syndrome.

We report the case of a 40-year-old female who presented to us with earache and a rapidly progressive painful ophthalmoplegia involving the right eye with right temporal swelling. A clinical and radiological assessment revealed it to be temporal cellulitis with orbital apex syndrome secondary to acute otitis media. In spite of prompt initiation of treatment, the patient died within 30 hr of presentation. The case is discussed in detail with a brief review of medical literature.

Anatomical study of the superior orbital fissure as seen during a pterional approach.

OBJECT: The superior orbital fissure (SOF) is an important landmark in the neurosurgical pterional approach, but the anatomical features of the SOF and the procedures necessary to fully expose it and its contents have not been detailed. Although the pterional approach is commonly used during skull base or vascular surgery by neurosurgeons who may already be familiar with its nuances and anatomical relationships to the SOF, this knowledge may also be useful to the wider neurosurgical community. The authors describe the spatial relationships of the contents of the SOF and suggest a specific sequ…

Bilateral eyelid edema and orbital cellulitis associated with Pott's puffy tumor.

Pott's puffy tumor is rarely associated with orbital cellulitis. We describe a pediatric patient with Pott's puffy tumor and right-sided orbital cellulitis. He underwent urgent surgical drainage of a glabellar subperiosteal abscess and completed a six week course of intravenous antibiotics with complete resolution of infection and no long-term sequelae. Close monitoring with imaging for intracranial spread and multidisciplinary surgical intervention are commonly recommended.

Orbital cellulitis following intralesional corticosteroid injection for periocular capillary haemangioma.

BACKGROUND: Early-life adversity such as childhood emotional, physical, and sexual trauma is associated with later-life psychiatric and chronic medical conditions, including elevated inflammatory markers. Although previous research suggests a role for chronic inflammatory dysfunctions in several disease etiologies, specific associations between childhood trauma types and later-life inflammation and health status are poorly understood. METHODS: We studied patients (n = 280) admitted to a psychiatric rehabilitation center. Self-reported histories of childhood emotional, physical, and sexual tra
