Fugitive dust in the vicinity of cement storage facilities as localized sources of toxic metal exposure in Nigerian urban settings: A geochemical health risk assessment.

This study quantified toxic metal concentrations in settled atmospheric dust in the vicinity of cement storage facilities and evaluated asso … and crustal sources, although source attribution remains inferential due to the absence of airborne particulate matter measurements and mineralogical confirmation. These findings identify areas surrounding cement storage facilities as hyper-localized hotspots of toxic metal exposure, though conclusions are constrained by dry-season sampling and reliance on total rat …

Environmental exposures, microbiome dynamics and chronic disease risk in climate-vulnerable regions: interdisciplinary perspectives from Puerto Rico.

Environmental factors such as air pollution, weather events, and ambient toxins are major contributors to human disease, with disproportiona … onmental exposures shape health disparities. We highlight studies demonstrating that fungal spores, particulate matter, and chemical pollutants disrupt microbiome balance, immune regulation, and metabolic pathways, thereby increasing disease risk in early life and aging populations. The review also considers social determinants of health, spatial inequities, infrast …

Association of urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites with idiopathic membranous nephropathy: Evidence from case-control and network toxicology.

The environmental factors underlying idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) remain inadequately comprehended. Our purpose is to investigate the environmental factors that contribute to the IMN. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as a major harmful component of airborne particulate matter, are suspected to be associated with IMN. We employed a 1:1 pair-matched case-control, network toxicology and molecular docking to validate the role of urinary PAHs metabolites in IMN pathogenesis. Urine samples from 146 IMN patients and 146 controls were analyzed for six monohydroxylated PAHs using UPLC…

Can Electric Vehicles Reduce Summertime Air Pollution Exposure Inequalities in Metro Atlanta? A High-Resolution Analysis.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are widely expected to improve air quality by reducing on-road emissions, but their impacts on exposure inequalities remain uncertain. To assess whether EVs can reduce summertime air pollution exposure inequalities in the Atlanta metropolitan area, we conduct high-resolution (1 km) photochemical air quality simulations using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. A 30% EV adoption of heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles is simulated to evaluate changes in nitrogen dioxide (NO2), maximum daily 8-hr average ozone (MDA8 O3), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) du…

Seasonal PM2.5 Exposure and Plasma Metabolome Changes Related to Metabolic Syndrome in Healthy Adults in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Chiang Mai, Thailand, experiences seasonal fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution associated with metabolic diseases, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This prospective observational study compared plasma metabolomes of 25 healthy adults in Samoeng District, a highly affected area, between low and high PM2.5 exposure seasons using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy. Twenty-six metabolites differentiating haze and non-haze seasons were identified using PLS-DA (VIP > 1.5). During the haze season, 11 were elevated, whereas 15 were decreased. Among the elevated …

A high-sensitivity MCPP derivatization method for determination of aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids in metro dust by nanoLC-MS and its application to health risk assessment.

Metro systems represent semi-enclosed environments in which limited ventilation promotes the accumulation of particulate matter, leading to the enrichment of carbonyl compounds in deposited dust and raising concerns regarding human exposure. However, the accurate determination of carbonyl compounds remains challenging owing to their high polarity, chemical reactivity, and limited compatibility of conventional derivatization strategies across different functional classes. To address these challenges, a unified pre-column derivatization strategy was developed for the parallel determination of al…

Cultural sensitivity and patient-centered care regarding incense and candle smoke emissions.

Incense and candles are commonly utilized for relaxation, deodorization, aesthetics, and religious observance. Both are used ubiquitously and viewed innocuously. However, both modalities release a multitude of compounds, including carbon monoxide, benzene, acrolein, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, that carry documented risks for cardiovascular disease, pulmonary dysfunction, and cancer. Incense particulate matter generates 45 mg/g vs. 10 mg/g from cigarette smoke. The following two clinical cases illustrate this challenge: an 87-year-old woman with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease a…

Urinary bladder obstruction caused by fungal balls: Unusual computed tomography findings - a case report.

RATIONALE: Bladder fungal ball formation is a rare type of fungal infection, most commonly occurring in patients with diabetes or immunodeficiency. Only a few reports have described bladder fungal balls detected on computed tomography (CT). This case presentation highlights the characteristic CT findings of bladder fungal balls and discusses the diagnostic challenges. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 66-year-old male was admitted with complains of passing particulate matter in urine, urinary frequency, urgency, and hematuria. He had a long-standing history of diabetes and hypertension. DIAGNOSES: Nonenha…

Chronic, Environmentally Relevant PM2.5 Exposure Exacerbates Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease and Early-Stage Renal Dysfunction in a Rodent Model.

While epidemiological studies link fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and renal dysfunction, a translational gap exists, as most animal models utilize acute, high-dose exposures that poorly reflect chronic, moderate-level human scenarios. To address this, we established a long-term (seven-month) mouse model (n = 8 per group) combining a Western diet (WD) with a chronic PM2.5 exposure paradigm equivalent to a human exposure of ~50 μg/m3, assessing key biomarkers, organ histopathology, and hepatic gene expression. While th…

Inflammation as a mediator of air pollution's role in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

BackgroundAir pollution has been implicated in cognitive decline and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRD). A case-crossover analysis of short-term PM2.5 exposure and COVID19-related hospitalizations in the National Clinical Cohort Collaborative.

BACKGROUND: Studies show associations between air pollution exposure and coronavirus 2019 (COVID19) hospitalizations, but have not substantially explored regional differences. In this study, we estimate associations between shorter-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and hospitalization among individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Daily PM2.5 concentrations from ground-based monitors were averaged to generat…
